Weston hospital hosting Tweet-a-Thon

Cleveland Clinic Florida in Weston and the Life Alliance Organ Recovery Agency will be hosting a Tweet-A-Thon to support National Donate Life Month and transplant awareness on Wednesday, April 23.

Organizers invite the community to share information about organ donation, generate awareness about transplant issues and encourage residents to sign up to be organ donors through Donate Life Florida.

National Help a Horse Day event set in Southwest Ranches

The Florida Research Institute Equine Nurturing Development and Safety Horse Rescue, 19801 Sheridan St. in Southwest Ranches, will be celebrating the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ “National Help a Horse Day” from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday, April 26 to compete for a chance to win a $10,000 grant.

Winners of the nationwide competition for equine rescues and sanctuaries are based on who raises the most awareness about programs for at-risk horses in their community. Events will include a “horse wash” for all 51 horses at the facility. There will also be a free BBQ for everyone who comes out to help.

Weston doctor receives national award

Dr. Steven D. Wexner, director of the Digestive Disease Center and chairman of the Department of Colorectal Surgery at Cleveland Clinic Florida in Weston, has been awarded the SAGES Distinguished Service Award for 2014 by the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons.

SAGES is a leading surgical society representing a worldwide community of more than 7,000 surgeons. He recently accepted the honor at the SAGES Foundation Awards Luncheon during the society’s annual meeting in Salt Lake City.

Weston Farmer's Market to take place on Saturday

The Weston Farmers Market is set for 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, April 12 in the parking lot of St. Paul Lutheran Church and Preschool, 580 Indian Trace. The event will also feature a free one-hour yoga class by the Prana Lab of Weston at 11:30 a.m.

Items to find include organic and local produce, honey, jams and jellies, ceviche, Indian food, barbecue, natural pain relievers, natural beauty and bath products, orchids and other plants, natural household products and more.

Weston band performs at Many Cultures, One People event

The Jewish Family Service of Broward County recently hosted the multicultural entertainment event Many Cultures, One People.

JFS, a family service agency that provides help to 23,000 people annually, raised almost $40,000 through the show at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts. Entertainment included Women in Jazz, Fushu Daiko Japanese Taiko Drummers, Silver Stars USA Steel Orchestra, Simon Salz Klezmer Band, Nritya Surabhi Indian Dance School and more, including Weston band Fondo Blanco.
