Next session of SAT prep classes starting next month


The Weston Community Center at Weston Regional Park (20200 Saddle Club Road) will be the site of an eight-week class for ages 15-20 to prepare for the SAT – College Board exam.

Instructor Jeff Steinberg is a former full-time adviser and instructor of college preparatory and study skills courses. Content reviews context of what is tested and exposes students to numerous strategies for doing well on the test.

'Moonlight Movies in the Park' flick announced

This year's "Moonlight Movies in the Park" kicks off at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11 with "Muppets Most Wanted."

Bring lawn chairs or blankets and relax with the free presentation. The full-length feature film is projected onto a giant inflatable screen behind the event stage in Weston Regional Park, 20200 Saddle Club Road.

C-SPAN inviting students to particpate in national documentary competition


C-SPAN is calling for entries in its 2015 StudentCam competition. Now in its 11th year, C-SPAN’s national contest invites all middle school students (grades 6-8) and high school students (grades 9-12) to produce a five- to seven-minute video documentary using C-SPAN programming.

This year, students will have the opportunity to produce a documentary that focuses on “The Three Branches & You: Tell a story that demonstrates how a policy, law, or action by either the executive, legislative, or judicial branch has affected you or your community.”

The C-SPAN Education Foundation supports the contest by awarding 150 student and 53 teacher awards, totaling $100,000 in cash prizes. The grand prize winner will be awarded $5,000, with multiple awards of $3,000, $1,500, $750, $500 and $250 to students in both middle and high school categories.

'Be Ready to Vote' presentation at Weston library


The Weston Branch Library, 4205 Bonaventure Blvd., is hosting a "Be Ready to Vote" information session from 2-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13.

This will be an opportunity for residents to learn what will be on the November ballot, including state amendments and Broward County issues. For more information, call the League of Women Voters of Broward County at 954-735-1311.

Weston Hills Country Club to be presented with award


The Weston Hills Country Club will be presented with a plaque and award for its commitment in the fight against ALS.

Every December, the facility hosts a fundraising event to benefit research for ALS. The event, known as Weston Hills 4 ALS, honors Tom Watson’s longtime caddy, Bruce Edwards, who died of the disease in 2004.

Following the presentation, a group of 50-100 people at the event will douse themselves with ice water as they take on the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.
