AARP Safe Driving course to be offered in Weston

Weston is offering AARP’s 55 Alive/Mature Driving Program from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, July 13 at the Weston Community Center, 20200 Saddle Club Road.

The classroom session is designed as a refresher course in safe driving and available to anyone 50 and older.

Registration is required by calling 954-385-9920. Cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for nonmembers. Participants are asked to bring a bagged lunch, and AARP members should bring their card.

Weston campers participate in World's Largest Swimming Lesson

The Swim Academy and Camp Sagemont hosted a session in participation with the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson at the Sagemont Lower Campus Aquatic Center in Weston.

It's the third year the center has been a location for the lesson, which brings awareness to swim safety and drowning prevention The event concluded with a lawn picnic for all of Camp Sagemont and participants to enjoy. Adding to the event festivities were water slides, vendors, prizes and a DJ.

The current record for the World’s Largest Swim Lesson stands at 24,873. Last year, the Swim Academy and Camp Sagemont had 128 participants. Participants will be entered into the Guinness Book of World Records and receive a certificate.

Weston accepting applications for Fourth of July Parade

Weston's 4th of July Hometown Parade takes place starting at 10:30 a.m., going from Town Center Boulevard and Three Village Road to Main Street.

Residents are invited to bring family, friends and organizations (sports teams, scouts, etc.) and participate. Registration is free. This year's theme is "Let Freedom Ring." Entries must be turned into the Parks and Recreation Department by June 21.

Weston students create mural for BSO building

A group of students at Tequesta Trace Middle School in Weston created a mosaic mural for the Broward Sheriff’s Office Civil Division window at the main Public Safety Building,

The theme, which was chosen by BSO employees, was the Florida Everglades. Each of the 18 students hung a 12-by-12-inch canvas that they painted. The canvasses put together form a pictures of the Everglades.

The piece was created under the guidance of art teacher Caron Libby. Tequesta Trace resource deputy Kevin Maccagli constructed the framing and helped organize the unveiling. Student artists were Jessica Barrett, Justin Beitz, Max Berget, Paolo Colmenares, Marcos Estrada, Colin Ferrer, Maria Machado, Juan Marin, Jissell Martinez, Angela Mujica, Jordan Prieto, Sophia Pulgar, Diego Ramirez, Gavin Rivero, Alexis Sanchez, Elizabeth Shin, Gabby Tirado and Rodrigo Villeda.

Free program to be offered by BSO

The Weston University Police Services Academy is a free eight-week program to introduce students ages 11–17 to law enforcement and the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

Lectures and field trips will include defensive tactics, crime scene investigations, Internet safety, as well as tours of places such as the main jail, Broward County Courthouse and BSO's SWAT, aviation and marine units.

The program will be staged 6-8 p.m. Mondays from June 24-Aug. 12 at the Weston Police Services Building, 17300 Royal Palm Blvd. Space is limited. Those interested can return a registration form no later than June 17.
