What's going on at the Weston Branch Library?

The Weston Branch Library (4205 Bonaventure Blvd.) has a number of events and programs going on at the beginning of September for visitors of all ages. Best of all, they're free.

Here are a few aimed at adults and families.

Sept. 1 - Forgotten Math for Parents, 6-7:30 p.m. Brush up on your math skills so that you’ll be able to help your child with math homework.

2 - Irish Dancing for Beginners, for kids 4 and older and adults, 6:30-7:30 p.m., with certified instructor Marie Poirier Marzi. RSVP to ext. 243.

3, 24 - U.S. Citizenship Exam Preparation, 10:30 a.m.-noon. Information: ext. 247.

4 - Friday Foreign Film: Valentin (directed by Alejandro Agesti, 2002, Argentina), 2-3:30 p.m. Nine-year-old Valentin’s feuding parents leave him to be raised by his eccentric grandmother, causing the boy to seek out alternative parental figures in the neighborhood. In Spanish with English subtitles. Sponsored by the Weston Friends of the Library Inc.

8, 15 - U.S. Citizenship Exam Preparation, 6-7:30 p.m. Information: ext. 247.

8 - At Home Strategies: Set-up Your Child for Success in the Upcoming School Year, 6:30-7:30 p.m. Find out how to help your child learn where, when, what and how to study.

9 - Twin Hearts Meditation in Spanish, 6-7:45 p.m. Experience peace and illumination with this meditation technique, facilitated by Carolina Ayala. No reservations needed.

12 - Weston Friends of the Library Book Fair, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Used books for sale in the lobby.

12 - Broadway Horizon’s Superstars Musical Showcase Performance, 11 a.m.-noon. Children perform songs and dances from musical productions.

12 - Creative Crossroads: Author Katherine Andarcia presents her workbook Luz de los ángeles, 2-4 p.m. Presented by United Dreams Foundation. In Spanish. Sponsored by the Weston Friends of the Library Inc. for Hispanic Heritage Month.

15 - Family Movie Night: Beverly Hills Chihuahua (directed by Raja Gosnell, 2009, PG), 6-7:30 p.m. A pampered Chihuahua gets lost in Mexico and has to rely on a group of stray dogs to help her evade ruthless dognappers and find her way home. Sponsored by the Weston Friends of the Library Inc.

Sept. 14 - Anime Club, ages 13-18, 4-5:30 p.m.

15 - Wags & Tales in English: Children can gain confidence in their reading skills by reading to a pet therapy dog. For ages 5 to 12; 3:30-4:30 p.m. Register at the Youth Services Desk. Sponsored by the Broward County Humane Society.

Local road report through Friday

Below are what motorists in the vicinity of the I-595 roadwork project need to watch out for the remainder of the week.

A lane of the ramp from eastbound I-595 to northbound turnpike will be closed nightly, from 9 p.m.-5 a.m through Friday, Aug. 28.

A lane of the ramp from northbound State Road 7 to westbound I-595 will be closed from 9 p.m. Aug. 27 until 5 a.m. Aug. 28.

Weston Regional Park playground reopens

Kids can now use the Weston Regional Park's main playground again. The area was closed down because of damage caused by a strong thunderstorm that passed through the area earlier in the summer.

A new shade cover is being fabricated.

Sights from Weston teens' summer journey across America

Weston resident Nicole Golden set off on the open road this summer, traveling almost 3,000 miles on a cross-country bike trip. She left in June from South Carolina and arrived in August in San Diego.

The Pine Crest student, 15, was the youngest out of 14 to participate in this cross-country adventure.

Weston launches new online tool for disaster preparedness

Weston is the first city in the nation to offer ReadyTown on its website. It's is an all-hazards online preparedness tool to assist the community in preparing for an emergency.

The guide is useful in building a plan for individuals or families if disaster strikes.

ReadyTown consists of three main sections:

1) Make A Plan - includes emergency contacts, family meeting places, important home numbers, grab-and-go folder, and special-needs planning.

2) Build A Kit - categories include food and water, first aid, clean air items, baby needs, lighting, communication and transportation and pets.

3) Learn to Prepare - provides an extensive resource library

The program can also send the user e-mail reminders on what still needs to be completed and a list of what items on the checklist must still be purchased (users can unsubscribe from reminders).

ReadyTown is created by OneStorm, an emergency preparedness company that specializes in the development of online planning tools and resources.

Upcoming events at the Weston Branch Library

There are a host of fun free events going on daily for adults and kids at the Weston Branch Library, 4205 Bonaventure Blvd.

Adults :

Carmen Dommar's "The Art of Crochet" is currently on display.

Book-Club-in-a-Bag -- Start your own book club with everything you need to lead a discussion group: 10 books, questions, biographical information, reviews, and a sign-up form to help you keep track of the books. All items must be returned when due. Contact Linda Abraham for available titles at 954-389-2098, ext. 249.

On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays -- English Café, a conversation practice class for intermediate learners of English. Mondays and Fridays 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and Wednesdays 6-7:30 p.m.

On Mondays, Papo Afiado presents intermediate conversational Portuguese from 6-7:30 p.m.

On Fridays it's the Spanish Café, a conversation practice class for beginners, 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Kids:

On Sundays, there is the Chess Club for all ages and levels, 1:30 to 3 p.m.

Tuesdays, Sept. 1, 8, 15 and 29, it's Toddler Time for ages 2 to 3, 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. Space is limited. Tickets will be given out prior to start of the program.

Storytime Thursdays are open to ages 3 to 6 at 11 a.m. Space is limited. Tickets will be given out prior to start of the program.

The latest road closures affecting residents through Aug. 21

Local motorists should be aware of the below related to the roadwork in the vicinity of I-595.

* The eastbound lane of State Road 84 between Hiatus Road and Nob Hill Road will be closed tomorrow, Aug. 18 from 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m.

* One inside left-turn lane of southbound and northbound Pine Island Road, and one left turn lane of westbound SR 84, will be closed through the intersection from 9:30 p.m. today, Aug. 17 until 5 a.m. Aug. 18.

* One inside left-turn lane of westbound SR 84 approaching Flamingo Road will be closed Aug. 18 from 1:30-3 p.m.

* One outside through lane of northbound Flamingo Road will be closed through the intersection Aug. 18 from 1:30-3 p.m.

* One outside northbound lane of State Road 7 will be closed south of the I-595 overpass Wednesday, Aug. 19, from 10 a.m.- 3 p.m.

* One lane of the ramp from northbound SR 7 to westbound I-595 will be closed from 9 p.m. Aug. 19 until 5 a.m. Aug. 20.

* One eastbound lane of SR 84 between Nob Hill Road and Pine Island Road will be closed Aug. 19 through Aug. 21 from 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m.

* One lane of the ramp from the turnpike to westbound I-595 will be closed from 9 p.m. Aug. 20 until 5 a.m. Aug. 21.

* One through lane of westbound SR 84 will be closed east of the I-595 off ramp for Nob Hill Road and one inside left-turn lane on westbound SR 84 approaching Nob Hill Road will be closed from 9:30 p.m. Aug. 20 until 5 a.m. Aug. 21.

Free Shred-A-Thon planned in Weston

Residents can combat identity theft by safely disposing of their personal documents, check stubs, credit card offers, receipts and any other material that might contain sensitive data.

A free Shred-A-Thon will take place 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Sept.12 at the Broward Sheriff's Office Weston District Office, 17300 Royal Palm Blvd.

Weston library hosts Book Fair Sept. 12

The Weston Branch Library's bookstore will host a Book Fair from
11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 12.

Soft and hard cover, fiction and nonfiction, children's, Spanish, Portuguese and English language books will be for sale. Most are priced between $.50 and $1.

The library is at 4205 Bonaventure Blvd.

Ongoing lane closures impacting Weston and surrounding cities

One eastbound lane of State Road 84 between Flamingo Road and 117th Way will be closed 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5.

One eastbound lane of S.R. 84 between Hiatus Road and 101st Road will be closed 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 5 and 6.

Crews from F.R. Aleman will be locating utilities, and crews from MACTEC will be conducting geotechnical drilling in these areas for the design phase of the I-595 Express Corridor Improvements Project.
