Tequesta Middle hosting environmental outreach event


NatureScape Broward will host an Environmental Community Outreach from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Dec. 12 at Tequesta Trace Middle School, 1800 Indian Trace, Weston.

This event is open to the public and will offer demonstrations on how to create environmentally friendly landscapes that can improve water quality, conserve water and create habitat for wildlife.

The event will benear the newly installed environmental garden and will include environmental education booths, a native tree and plant giveaway, music, campus tours, wildflower plantings, workshops, ladybug releases and more.

Come see the Artery Explorer exhibit tomrorow in Weston

The Artery Explorer exhibit will be on display 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1 at the Cleveland Clinic's Jagelman Conference Center, 2950 Cleveland Clinic Blvd. in Weston.

Information on risk factors that help contribute to atherosclerosis or the progressive build-up of plaque in the arteries are among the topics discussed.

This event will allow attendees to explore deep inside the arteries. A dietitian will be on hand to answer heart-healthy nutrition questions. Free blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol screenings will be provided.

Vigil for homeless held at Southwest Ranches school

For the thousands of youth across the country who sleep under bridges and in cardboard boxes, 300 teens and their parents joined together to participate in the 19th Annual Covenant House Florida Candlelight Vigil for Homeless Youth, hosted this year at Archbishop McCarthy High School in Southwest Ranches.

The event began with a somber candlelight processional, followed by a program that included stories by homeless youth.

Students and parents collected and donated clothing, including 120 new T-shirts. The event raised $3,000 in donations and sponsorships for Covenant House Florida.

Weston presents "Mall Cop" movie in the park next month

The popular free Moonlight Movies in the Park continues with "Paul Blart, Mall Cop" playing at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12 at Weston Regional Park, 20200 Saddle Club Road.

The film is projected onto a giant inflatable screen on the event stage inside the park.


Paul Blart is a mild-mannered security guard who saves the day at a shopping mall that is overtaken by a gang of organized crooks. Bring lawn chairs or blankets for a relaxing night out. Kids under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Weston resident honored for outstanding community service

Weston Allstate agent Seth Friedman recently received the Agency Hands in the Community Award for his commitment to helping others.


Allstate agent Seth Friedman presents a grant to the Tyler Goldberg Foundation. The foundation is committed to preventing injuries to children due to the operation of personal watercraft.

With this award came a $500 grant from the Allstate Foundation for the Tyler Goldberg Foundation, where Friedman volunteers.

In 2008, the Allstate Foundation awarded more than a half million dollars in grants to Florida nonprofits.

Weston fire stations are accepting unwrapped toys (for the Children’s Cancer Care Center) and non-perishable food items (benefiting the Daily Bread Food Bank) through Dec. 3.

Lane closures this week


Below are road notes to keep in mind for Weston and neighboring cities:

* One lane off Pine Island Road will undergo a rolling lane closure, first northbound then southbound, through the State Road intersection, nightly, 9:30 p.m.- 5 a.m., through Wednesday, Nov. 18.

* The flyover ramp from northbound University Drive to westbound I-595 will undergo a traffic shift from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18 to accommodate a bridge inspection.

* Westbound S.R. 84 will undergo one rolling lane closure between Nob Hill Road and University Drive, nightly, from 9:30 p.m.-5 a.m., beginning Wednesday, Nov. 18 and ending on Friday, Nov. 20.

* The right lane and shoulder of the ramp from southbound Turnpike to I-595 will be closed from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19.

* Eastbound S.R. 84 will undergo one rolling lane closure between Nob Hill Road and University Drive, from 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19 to 5 a.m. Friday, Nov. 20.

* The flyover ramp from southbound University Drive to eastbound I-595 will undergo a traffic shift from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20 to accommodate a bridge inspection.

Arts Council of Greater Weston looking for artists


The Arts Council of Greater Weston is putting a call out to all artists who live in the greater Weston area (Davie, Cooper City, Southwest Ranches, Pembroke Pines and Plantation) to participate in the Fourth Annual Weston Artwalk and Showtime Outdoor Festival, set for Feb. 21.

Festival organizers are looking for a wide variety of artists to exhibit and sell their art, including painters, sculptors, photographers, creative crafts, jewelry artisans and more.

The $35 registration fee includes a 10-by-10-foot tent for accepted artists. Applications are being accepted through Jan. 15.

Collection for Harvest Drive


The city of Weston is asking residents to drop off any donations for the Harvest Drive at Western High School (1200 SW 136th Ave. in Davie) after 3 p.m. Nov. 20.

Items needed include non-perishable food items, toys, books, toiletries and bicycles.

Foreign film series continues at Weston area theater

The Weston Foreign Film Series presents Italian for Beginners with show times at 5 and 7:15 p.m. at the Weston 8 Cinema (1338 SW 160th Ave.).

Italian for Beginners is a movie with English subtitles about lonely singles in a Danish town who use a beginner's course in Italian as the starting place for romance.

Tickets are $7 per film and are available at the Weston Community Center, the Friends Bookstore at the Weston Branch Library and Community Bank of Broward.

Weston YMCA holding Parent's Night Out Nov. 21


The Scheinberg Family YMCA of Weston, 20201 Saddle Club Road, is hosting a Parent's Night Out for those with children ages 5-12 from 6-10 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21.

Parents can enjoy a night out and leave their kids at the YMCA for activities including sports, Thanksgiving arts and crafts, a movie and pizza dinner.

Cost is $25 for members for first child, $15 for each additional child, $35 and $25 for nonmembers.

Luncheon in Weston raises $25,000

The annual Michelle Goldstein’s Spirit of Life Luncheon at Weston Hills Country Club raised $25,000 to benefit the Jewish Adoption and Foster Care Options Village’s Children’s Emergency Fund.

The luncheon paid tribute to Michelle Goldstein, who lost her life during the 9-11 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center in New York City.

Goldstein’s mother, Ingrid Jaffe, chairs this event every year and works tirelessly on behalf of the children of JAFCO. This year, attendees enjoyed shopping at the boutiques, lunch, raffle prizes and a silent auction. Participants were invited to join in a candle-lighting ceremony in honor or memory of a special person.
