Construction is scheduled to begin on the I-595 Corridor Express Project on Feb. 15. The first phase of the construction will be from Nob Hill Road to Davie Road.

Three lanes of traffic in each direction will always be maintained by shifting traffic to designated constructed roadways. Lane closures will occur between 9:30 p.m.-5 a.m. Speed limit will be maintained at 65 mph.

Business access will be maintained during construction. Three reversible lanes will be constructed in the existing median area, and new entrance/exit ramps will be constructed to replace some existing ramps. This project is scheduled to be completed in about three-and-a-half years.

The city of Weston, in partnership with the Arts Council of Greater Weston, will kick off the Weston Symphony Series, with the first of two symphony concert performances from the Symphony of the Americas.

First is "From Opera to Broadway," set for 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30 at the Cypress Bay Theater (18600 Vista Park Blvd.). The second performance, “Rising Stars Alumni Concert,” by the Ars Flores Symphony Orchestra, takes place at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 13.

"From Opera to Broadway" will feature select arias and duets from famous operas and Broadway shows performed in musical unison with the full symphony.

Led by Maestro James Brooks-Bruzzese, artistic director, the concert will feature solo and guest performances from young artists Eduardo Aladrén, Ron Bohmer (tenor), Franc D'Ambrosio (tenor), Maria Aleida (soprano) and Elizabeth Roberts (soprano).

Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door, $10 for students, or $35 for both performances.

Weston is offering a free puppet show, “The Shadow," at 1:30 and 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30 at the Community Center inside Weston Regional Park, 20200 Saddle Club Road.

Puppets will portray the Persian tale about a girl who was turned into a pumpkin. It will be complete with a sing along with Old MacDonald and his odd farm, the mountain climber and Mysto the Magician.

The event is appropriate for ages 3-10 with parent/guardian.

The Broward Sheriff's Office has teamed with Food for the Poor to help the people of Haiti. Fire stations in Weston and BSO stations across the county will collect items for delivery.

Weston fire stations are at 17300 Royal Palm Blvd., 951 Saddle Club Road and 3955 Bonaventure Blvd.

Items accepted include canned meat and fish, evaporated and condensed milk, baby formula, medical supplies and tents, which are desperately needed.

The Sheriff's Office also is accepting monetary donations at www.sheriff.org/haiti.

Shipping is limited to items most necessary at this time.

The American Cancer Society has announced residents U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Jim Norton as honorary co-chairs for the 2010 Relay For Life of Weston.

“The vital research and programs of the American Cancer Society are leading the way to eliminating cancer as a major health problem, and I am proud to support my hometown Relay For Life,” Wasserman Schultz said.

“I’m extremely proud to participate in Relay For Life of Weston, and to do everything I can to promote awareness and raise funding for cancer research,” Norton said.

Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature event. Weston resident Melissa Klassman, an honors student at the David Posnack Hebrew
Day Upper School, is one of two winners of the Wendy's High School Heisman Award for Florida.

The award is for excellence in academics, athletics and community and school leadership.

"Melissa is a hard worker who will never miss a practice or a game and she is a team leader," said assistant athletic director Keith Krasiejko. "She has played every sport and lettered in cross country, basketball, soccer, volleyball, softball and tennis."

Melissa's athletic awards include Most Valuable Athlete, All-County in basketball and soccer and All-County Second Team in soccer.

She has also been Key Club president and editor of the school yearbook and student body secretary.

Weston is offering free bulk pickup to residents throughout January.

For single-family homes, bulk trash collection will correspond with your regularly scheduled collection day (Wednesday-Friday, Jan. 20-22), and all bulk trash must be placed curbside by 7 a.m. Your bulk collection day is your regular garbage collection day only.

If items are not collected by the end of the day, they will be collected the following day, it is dependent upon the volume of items placed out by the community.

Multi-family units with Dumpster service can place items alongside it by 7 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 23.

Hazardous waste materials cannot be accepted.
