Meeting for I-595 construction set


Construction is scheduled to begin on the I-595 Corridor Express Project on Feb. 15. The first phase of the construction will be from Nob Hill Road to Davie Road.

Three lanes of traffic in each direction will always be maintained by shifting traffic to designated constructed roadways. Lane closures will occur between 9:30 p.m.-5 a.m. Speed limit will be maintained at 65 mph.

Business access will be maintained during construction. Three reversible lanes will be constructed in the existing median area, and new entrance/exit ramps will be constructed to replace some existing ramps. This project is scheduled to be completed in about three-and-a-half years.

Weston Symphony Series kicks off Jan. 30


The city of Weston, in partnership with the Arts Council of Greater Weston, will kick off the Weston Symphony Series, with the first of two symphony concert performances from the Symphony of the Americas.

First is "From Opera to Broadway," set for 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30 at the Cypress Bay Theater (18600 Vista Park Blvd.). The second performance, “Rising Stars Alumni Concert,” by the Ars Flores Symphony Orchestra, takes place at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 13.

"From Opera to Broadway" will feature select arias and duets from famous operas and Broadway shows performed in musical unison with the full symphony.

Led by Maestro James Brooks-Bruzzese, artistic director, the concert will feature solo and guest performances from young artists Eduardo Aladrén, Ron Bohmer (tenor), Franc D'Ambrosio (tenor), Maria Aleida (soprano) and Elizabeth Roberts (soprano).

Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door, $10 for students, or $35 for both performances.

Free puppet show in Weston on Jan. 30


Weston is offering a free puppet show, “The Shadow," at 1:30 and 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30 at the Community Center inside Weston Regional Park, 20200 Saddle Club Road.

Puppets will portray the Persian tale about a girl who was turned into a pumpkin. It will be complete with a sing along with Old MacDonald and his odd farm, the mountain climber and Mysto the Magician.

The event is appropriate for ages 3-10 with parent/guardian.

Weston teacher gearing up for Tour of Discovery 2010

Rafael Giraldo, teacher at Tequesta Trace Middle School in Weston, is ready for another adventure.

He plans to cycle 2,400 miles from Bar Harbor, Maine, to Key West this summer. The "Ride of the Republic" will see Giraldo venture through the 13 states of the Union in 60 days.

Fire stations in Weston collecting for people of Haiti


The Broward Sheriff's Office has teamed with Food for the Poor to help the people of Haiti. Fire stations in Weston and BSO stations across the county will collect items for delivery.

Weston fire stations are at 17300 Royal Palm Blvd., 951 Saddle Club Road and 3955 Bonaventure Blvd.

Items accepted include canned meat and fish, evaporated and condensed milk, baby formula, medical supplies and tents, which are desperately needed.

Honorary co-chairs named for American Cancer Society’s 2010 Relay For Life of Weston


The American Cancer Society has announced residents U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Jim Norton as honorary co-chairs for the 2010 Relay For Life of Weston.

“The vital research and programs of the American Cancer Society are leading the way to eliminating cancer as a major health problem, and I am proud to support my hometown Relay For Life,” Wasserman Schultz said.
“I’m extremely proud to participate in Relay For Life of Weston, and to do everything I can to promote awareness and raise funding for cancer research,” Norton said.

Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature event. Businesses, civic clubs, churches, friends and families take turns walking in relay fashion while they also celebrate the critical role the American Cancer Society plays in the fight against cancer. The Relay For Life of Weston takes place at Cypress Bay High School April 24-25.

Weston resident named High School Heisman winner


Weston resident Melissa Klassman, an honors student at the David Posnack Hebrew
Day Upper School, is one of two winners of the Wendy's High School Heisman Award for Florida.

The award is for excellence in academics, athletics and community and school leadership.

"Melissa is a hard worker who will never miss a practice or a game and she is a team leader," said assistant athletic director Keith Krasiejko. "She has played every sport and lettered in cross country, basketball, soccer, volleyball, softball and tennis."

Melissa's athletic awards include Most Valuable Athlete, All-County in basketball and soccer and All-County Second Team in soccer.

She has also been Key Club president and editor of the school yearbook and student body secretary.

The Weston Friends of the Library is hosting a Book from Fair 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30. The library is at 4305 Bonaventure Blvd.

Paperbacks will sell for an average of 50 cents, hard covers for $1.

Fourth annual Weston Foreign Film Series continues Monday

Weston 8 Cinema, the city of Weston, the Arts Council of Greater Weston and the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival presents For My Father at 5 and 7:15 p.m. Monday, Jan. 11 as part of the fourth annual Weston Foreign Film Series.

For My Father is a powerful drama released in 2008 about Israeli/Palestinian relationships when a failed terrorist plot results in friendship (all films have English subtitles).

Ice Age 3 showing rescheduled due to cold weather

In a bit of irony, the feature film Ice Age 3 originally scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9 at Weston Regional Park has been rescheduled to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23 due to the cold weather advisory.

Free bulk pickup offered to Weston residents this month


Weston is offering free bulk pickup to residents throughout January.

For single-family homes, bulk trash collection will correspond with your regularly scheduled collection day (Wednesday-Friday, Jan. 20-22), and all bulk trash must be placed curbside by 7 a.m. Your bulk collection day is your regular garbage collection day only.

If items are not collected by the end of the day, they will be collected the following day, it is dependent upon the volume of items placed out by the community.

Multi-family units with Dumpster service can place items alongside it by 7 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 23.

Hazardous waste materials cannot be accepted.

Lane closures this week


As many return back to work and school, below are a few lane closures for area motorists:

* A westbound lane of State Road 84 between Flamingo and Pine Island Road will be closed from 9:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 4, to 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5.

* An eastbound lane of SR 84 between Nob Hill and Pine Island Road will be closed 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m. through Thursday, Jan. 7.

* A lane of SR 84 will have a rolling lane closure, first westbound then eastbound, between Flamingo and Nob Hill Road, from 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5, to 5 a.m. Friday, Jan. 8.

Professional Theatre for Children presents Cinderella in Weston


The musical Cinderella takes all the traditional elements of the original story and adds all the humor, action and romance of the Disney film.

Join the Fairy Godmother at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 23 at the Cypress Bay Theater (18600 Vista Park Blvd. in Weston) as she takes on the infamous Evil Stepmother to assure that Cinderella and Prince Charming are reunited for the happiest of endings.
