The YMCA Ultimate Olympic Family Challenge will feature competition, exercise classes, races, bounce houses and more from 8-11 a.m. Saturday, March 13 at the Weston Y, 20201 Saddle Club Road.

Cost is $10, $5 for ages 8-12, and free for age 7 and younger.

An exhibit of 20 oil paintings by Philip Mann will be on display March 1-31 at the Weston Branch Library's multipurpose room (4205 Bonaventure Blvd.)

The exhibit, "Reflections of the Everglades and South Florida," is part of Florida Heritage Month, a statewide salute to the unique sights, sounds and specialties found in Florida.

Residents will also have a chance to meet Mann in person at the library from 6:30-7:30 p.m. March 16.

The playground adjacent to the Community Center in the Weston Regional Park (20200 Saddle Club Road) will be closed from Feb. 16- April 2 (originally scheduled to reopen on Feb. 27). The playground is undergoing maintenance and awaiting replacement of a new shade covering, which was destroyed by a storm.

Hyatt Regency Bonaventure Conference Center & Spa in Weston and Hands On Educational Services hosted a graduation ceremony for Fort Lauderdale resident Samantha Fishkin, the first graduate from its newly launched Hospitality Training Program for Persons with Disabilities.

Fishkin was the first student to complete the training program, which allows people with special needs to work as temporary Hyatt Regency Bonaventure employees in several departments, including catering, housekeeping and human resources. During the two-week curriculum, she worked alongside Executive Chef Bob Axenfeld and his team in the kitchen, to learn everything from food preparation to garnishing.

Fishkin, who suffered traumatic brain injury as a result of a car accident in 1998, will now become a regular part-time Hyatt employee.

Below is some information to consider when venturing on the roads this week:

-- One westbound lane of State Road 84 between Flamingo and Hiatus Road will be closed from 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25 until 5 a.m. Friday, Feb. 26 to remove a utility pole.

-- Traffic on S.R. 84 and I-595, in both directions, will be stopped for 10 minutes between 11 p.m. Feb. 25 and 2 a.m. Feb. 26 while an FPL overhead line is dropped and removed. Florida Highway Patrol will be stationed throughout the corridor to assist with traffic management during the operation.

-- Two lanes of westbound S.R. 84 will be closed at Hiatus Road from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Feb. 25. An FHP officer will be on site during the closure to slow down merging traffic.

-- One lane of westbound S.R. 84 will be closed through the intersection of Pine Island Road from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly from Monday through Wednesday morning.

-- One lane of westbound S.R. 84 will be closed between Nob Hill and Pine Island Road from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 23.

-- The designated U-turn from eastbound S.R. 84 to westbound S.R. 84 at Pine Island Road will be closed beginning at 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 22 through early fall to begin major roadway construction. Motorists will still be able to make the U-turn through the intersection.

The Broward Sheriff's Office, in partnership with the United Way Commission on Substance Abuse, will host a prescription drug "take back" program from 9 a.m.-noon March 13 at the Weston Public Safety Building, 17300 Royal Palm Blvd.

If you bring any unwanted or expired prescription or over-the-counter medication, you receive one $5 gift card to Wal-Mart or CVS while supplies last. Participation is anonymous, and all drugs will be incinerated.

The feature film "Marley and Me" will be shown for free at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6 at the event stage in Weston Regional Park, 20200 Saddle Club Road.

The lovable but naughty and neurotic dog Marley teaches a family important life lessons. Look for the Sun Sentinel and many spots in South Florida in the film as well.
