Performance of "Emperor's New Clothes" taking place in Weston next month


Professional Theater for Children presents "The Emperor's New Clothes," a theatrical presentation by Stages Productions, at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 17 at the Cypress Bay Theater, 18600 Vista Park Blvd.

When the emperor hears of a magical new material that is invisible to anyone not good enough to see it, he demands the tailor make him a new suit. Join the crafty swindlers, the bumbling emperor and the entire court as they learn the cost of conceit.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door.

Paving on Manatee Isles Drive begins this week


From Thursday, March 25 through Friday, April 2, crews will be paving Manatee Isles Drive in Weston.

Residents and motorists should expect delays due to temporary lane closures weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The paving is being coordinated with the start of Broward County Public Schools' Spring Break in order to avoid disrupting school traffic at Manatee Bay Elementary.

Paving will be done on the stretch from South Post Road to west of Isles of Weston Avenue. The work is part of the final phase of the Manatee Isles Drive Improvement Project.

Weston's next Movie in the Park announced

"Madagascar 2" will be shown at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 10 at Weston Regional Park.

Bring lawn chairs or blankets. The full-length feature film will be projected onto a giant inflatable screen. For more information, call 954-389-4321.

This is the final Moonlight Movie in the Park for this performing arts season.

Almost time for annual Easter egg hunt


The Weston Egg Hunt gets under way at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 3 at Weston Regional Park.

Thousands of candy-filled eggs on four baseball fields will be up for grabs for children 10 and younger. There will be three age categories. Residents are asked to bring a basket for egg hunting.

Message from the Weston Building Department


On Wednesday and Thursday, March 31 and April 1, there will be no inspections scheduled or available in Weston.

Due to state-mandated continuing education requirements, all inspectors, plan reviewers, chiefs and the city building official will be attending a required seminar.

The office will be open for permit submitting and permit pick-up.

Retiring Weston fire chief to be honored by City Commission


Retiring Weston Fire Chief John Frailey will be honored by the City Commission at 7 p.m. tonight.

Chief since July 2007, Frailey also served as an assistant chief with the Broward Sheriff’s Office Department of Fire Rescue.

Frailey began his career with Broward County in June 1980 as a paramedic, moving through the ranks and now retiring after 30 years of service.

Road work set on stretch of State Road 84


State Road 84 will be repaved in a 4.7-mile-long section from east of Southwest 136th Avenue to west of Weston Road.

Other improvements will include sidewalk construction, guardrail replacement and landscaping.

SR 84 will have one westbound lane closed for 700 feet at a time west of 136th Avenue weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Florida Department of Transportation expects the work to be done by the summer.

Tony Orlando performs at Bonaventure Town Center Club

The Bonaventure Town Center Club wants to “tie a yellow ribbon” with theater-goers on March 20. That’s because pop music crooner Tony Orlando is hitting the stage at 9 p.m. at the club.

The concert is part of the club’s Center Stage Showcase, which also featured such acts as Dick Capri, Charo and Avery Sommers earlier in the season.

Weston continues annual tradition with outdoor concert


Weston and the Rotary Club of Weston are hosting its sixth annual free outdoor concert Rock & Pop Masters at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 20 on the event stage at Weston Regional Park, 20200 Saddle Club Road.

Residents are invited to bring lawn chairs or blankets to enjoy the entertainment.

The talent lineup includes Edgar Winter, Larry Hoppen, Don Barnes, Pat Travers, John Cafferty & Tunes Antunes, Peter Beckett and Deanna Johnston. Special guest is Galaxy Girl.
