Weston meeting to discuss elimination of Broward County bus route

There will be a meeting to discuss Broward County Transit possibly eliminating Bus Route 23.

The meeting is set for 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17 at Broward Health Weston, 2300 N. Commerce Parkway.

Weston playground reopens tomorrow with new equipment

will reopen on Friday, July 30. New equipment was installed for residents to use.

Weston collecting back-to-school supplies for students in need

Weston will join other cities around Broward County in assisting Family Central to provide needy children with the basic foundation of supplies that are critical for their success in school.

Collection locations are:
* Weston City Hall, 17200 Royal Palm Blvd.
* Weston Police Services, 17300 Royal Palm Blvd.
* Weston Community Center, 20200 Saddle Club Road
* Weston Public Works, 2599 S. Post Road

All donated supplies will be delivered to Family Central, where they will be packaged for children and families. The goal is to help 1,000 young children as they start or return to school.

Supplies accepted include backpacks, lunch boxes, notebooks, crayons, pencils, pens, markers and more.

Bonnie halts Weston bulk pick-up

Weston’s residential bulk pickup for today and Saturday has been suspended to prevent the possibility of damage from items becoming airborne.

Residents are asked to not place bulk items outside for pickup today or Saturday. There will, however, be regular garbage cart collection both days.

The revised bulk pickup dates will be on Monday, July 26 for those who had the Friday collection canceled and Tuesday, July 27 for all multi-family units with Dumpsters.

Prep for the SAT in Weston

The Weston Community Center, 20200 Saddle Club Road, is offering a class for ages 15-20 to prepare for the SAT.

Instructor Jeff Steinberg developed this course in 1990 and taught it at the University of Miami.

Content includes commonly overlooked strategies and techniques for beating the SAT.

Dates are:
Sunday from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. (Aug. 15–Oct. 3)
Sunday from 1:30-4 p.m. (Aug. 15–Oct. 3)
Tuesday from 7–9:30 p.m. (Aug. 17–Oct. 5)
Thursday from 7:15-9:45 p.m. (Aug. 19–Oct. 7)
Sunday from 1:30–4 p.m. (Oct. 10–Nov. 28)
Tuesday from 7–9:30 p.m. (Oct. 12–Nov. 30)

Cost is $475 and includes text and materials.

FIU signs agreement with Weston hospital

Florida International University’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine has signed an affiliation agreement with Cleveland Clinic Florida.

The affiliation with the Weston hospital will allow FIU medical students in their senior year to receive clinical training from physicians in various specialties.

Cypress Bay graduates among those named National Merit Scholars

Four Cypress Bay High School graduates have been named as National Merit Scholars and will receive scholarships financed by colleges and universities.

Alyson Samach, Samantha Baraoidan, Holly Beilin and Christopher Cook are among the 1,900 winners recently announced by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. More than 2,800 other college-sponsored award recipients were announced in late May.

Officials of each sponsor college selected their winners from among finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program who will attend their institution. College-sponsored awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.

Weston YMCA Splash Day to be rescheduled for later this year

Mother Nature has forced Splash Day at the Sheinberg Family YMCA in Weston to be canceled and rescheduled for early fall.

For more information, call the YMCA at 954-424-9622.

This program will highlight drowning prevention and awareness, the leading cause of death of children ages 1-4 in Florida.

Children can visit hands-on safety stations, all relating to swim safety.

Weston library among drop-off sites for Broward County 365 Food Drive

So far, Broward County’s “365 Food Drive” has collected 4,632 pounds of non-perishable items for area food banks six months into the program.

While all non-perishable food items are welcome, each month has a theme. July is "It’s all about Patriotism."

Among the collection sites is the Weston Branch Library, 4205 Bonaventure Blvd., during regular hours.

Friends of the Library take home Advocacy for Libraries Award

The Weston Friends of the Library was presented with an award for Advocacy for Libraries at this year's countywide Friends of the Library Luncheon and Awards Ceremony.

During the recognition, proclamations issued by the City Commission for the Weston Branch Library’s fourth anniversary and National Library Week were mentioned as a part of the group's advocacy efforts.

Weston city offices closed Monday

All city administrative offices in Weston will be closed Monday in observance of Independence Day.

However, all of the parks will be open. There will also be regular garbage collection.

Below are lane closures for Weston's July 4th Hometown Celebration that may delay your commute:

5K RUN/Walk will cause lane closures from 6-8 a.m.

Town Center Boulevard ‐- from Town Center Circle to Three Village Road, and from Indian Trace to Three Village
Three Village Road ‐- from Town Center Boulevard to Indian Trace
Indian Trace -‐ from Three Village Road to Town Center Boulevard

The parade and other festivities will have lanes closed 9:30-11:30 a.m.

Town Center Boulevard -‐ north and southbound, between Town Center Circle and Indian Trace
Three Village Road -‐ eastbound, between Town Center and Bonaventure boulevards
Bonaventure Boulevard -- southbound, between Three Village Road and Bell Tower Lane

Arts Council of Greater Weston celebrates achievements and announces new board

The Arts Council of Greater Weston recently had its annual installation/celebration dinner at the Weston Community Center.

Members celebrated the achievements accomplished during the past term under president Andrea Sanders, and Weston Mayor Eric Hersh installed the new board.
