Weston parks named president of Florida Recreation and Park Association


Don Decker, director of Weston's parks and recreation department, was recently appointed president of the Florida Recreation and Park Association.

The organization advocates for parks and recreation interests and provides its members with a forum for professional development, networking opportunities and resources. He will oversee 1,500 members representing more than 270 parks and recreation agencies throughout the state.

His one-year term begins Sept. 2 at the state conference in Orlando.

Broward Sheriff's Office offering free home security surveys for Weston residents


The Broward Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention Squad is offering free home security surveys to provide Weston residents with answers on how to improve the safety of their home.

Concerns covered include having the right locks, properly securing windows, alarm systems and having enough lighting in the home.

The survey takes about 30 minutes and provides information on how to improve the safety of your home.

Baton and dance classes offered in Weston next month

The South Florida Super Stars are offering combination classes at the Community Center inside Weston Regional Park, 20200 Saddle Club Road.

Hip-hop dance, cheerleading and baton twirling will be taught by instructor Wendy Russell.

Cost is $45 a month. There is a registration cost of $25, and you will also be asked to purchase your own baton for $20. Pom-poms and other equipment will be provided. Classes are offered Thursday: 4-5 p.m. for ages 4-7, 5-6 p.m. for ages 8-12, and 6-7 p.m. for Shooting Star students.

Playground at Weston Regional closed Monday


The satellite playground by the picnic shelters and roller hockey rinks at Weston Regional Park will be closed Monday, Aug. 23 for minor repairs.

Residents can use the new playground near the YMCA until the work is completed.

Results are in for Weston's efforts to assist with school supply drive


Collection boxes were placed in the lobby of Weston City Hall, the Police Services Center, the Weston Community Center and the Public Works Services Center for Broward County's school supply drive for Family Central.

After two weeks, the results included 50 notebooks, 23 packs and 50 individual pencils/pens, 34 glue sticks/bottles and 50 folders/binders.

Weston teacher returns home from 15-state bike tour

Tequesta Trace Middle School teacher Rafael Giraldo returned to his Weston home after a bike tour of the 13 original states.

During his Tour of Discovery Ride for the Republic, he cycled through 15 states in all, covering 2,930 miles.

Residents and dignitaries throughout the city welcomed Giraldo as he made his final stop off State Road 84 behind Publix.

Health event coming to Weston hotel


The Broward County Health Department will participate in the Joining Forces For Better Health 2010 event, set for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18 at the Hyatt Regency Bonaventure Hotel and Conference Center, 250 Racquet Club Road in Weston.

The event is designed to raise public awareness of and showcase the diversity of health and medical services in South Florida.

Guest speakers and more than 50 health, medical and community resource agencies and professionals are expected to showcase their services.

Weston elementary and middle schools get high marks


Weston elementary and middle schools are all rated as "A" schools based on FCAT results and school grades.

Grades for high school will come in November after the implementation of a new scoring system that determines the grade by utilizing 50 percent FCAT and 50 percent new measures.

Weston resident and U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz has launched an On-Demand cable TV show, chronicling her political activities in Florida and Washington.

The Sheinberg Family YMCA of Weston, 20201 Saddle Club Road, is registering for fall sports programs throughout the month.
