In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Broward Health is urging women to get a mammogram during its second annual Mammo-Palooza week, 7 a.m.-7 p.m., Oct. 11-15.

They expect to screen more than 1,200 women in five days, four times more than what the health system would normally screen during any given week.

Physicians will be on hand to write prescriptions for screenings at all five Broward Health facilities: Broward Health Weston, Broward General Medical Center, Imperial Point Medical Center, Coral Springs Medical Center and the North Broward Medical Center.

There will also be food, raffle prizes and on-site entertainment.

There are 60 electronic textbooks available to Broward students, parents and teachers online through the district's Broward Enterprise Education Portal.

The district's e-textbook initiative began in 2006 with K-12 science textbooks and has grown with each district-wide textbook adoption since then. A full complement of e-textbooks is available for courses with district-wide adoptions in mathematics, reading, science and world languages.

In addition, publishers have voluntarily offered their available e-textbooks for secondary social studies courses. Additional e-textbooks will be added with upcoming annual, district-wide textbook adoptions.

Visit http://beep.browardschools.com, click on the Student or Parent Portal and enter the BEEP user name and password, which is the same as their Virtual Counselor user name and password.

If a student or parent needs help with their user name and/or password, they should contact their school. Teachers may access the e-textbooks by going to the website, selecting the Teacher Portal and entering their BEEP user name and password.

Weston Area Little League is opening online registration Oct. 15 for boys' and girls' baseball for ages 5-18.

Softball is girls only ages 5-16. The Challenger program is free to all participants ages 5-18. Pricing varies per age level.

The YMCA of Broward County is hosting Dinner is In, part of a national initiative to encourage families to eat dinner together.

The Sheinberg Family YMCA of Weston, 20201 Saddle Club Road, will be serving Italian food from 5:30-7 p.m. for free for members and children in after-school programs.

Families also will receive a take-home packet with dinner ideas, advice on packing healthy lunches, snacking tips and family fun activities.

Y team members will also offer dinner-table conversation starters. All items will focus on promoting families eating dinner together, without distractions such as TV, cell phones or magazines.

Similar dinners will be held at the Broward Y's six other locations.

Juniors, seniors and select sophomores are offered entry into the Weston University program via their high school (Cypress Bay, Sagemont and Western) by submitting an essay entitled "Communities Need Leaders."

Next year's field of 20-24 students is selected by school administration and, when necessary, the city's director of communications.

The chosen students will spend eight months learning about state and local government.

They will spend one school day each month with city staff. Monthly program days are made up of instruction, conversations, observations and hands-on activities exposing them to city services.

The 2010 Relay For Life of Weston was ranked the number one relay in Broward County, raising $168,000 for the fight against cancer.

The Relay for Life of Weston was also 15th out of the 365 relays in the state.

The next fundraiser will be at 6 p.m. April 16 at Cypress Bay High School.

The Weston Community Center, 20200 Saddle Club Road, is offering AARP’s 55 Alive/Mature driving program from 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2.

The refresher course in safe driving is available to anyone 50 and older. A reduction in automobile insurance premiums is allowed to those 55 and older by most insurance companies when the course is completed and the driver has a safe driving record.

Registration is required. Those participating are asked to bring a bagged lunch and their AARP card. Cost is $12 for members, $14 for nonmembers.

The Sheinberg Family YMCA of Weston has opened fall registration for two programs geared toward children.

* During holidays from school, the facility provides child care and a full day of fun, including arts and crafts, swimming and games.

The YMCA Kidz Club will be offered Thursday, Sept. 9 (schools are closed in observance of Rosh Hashana).

Cost is $35 for members and $45 for nonmembers. Registration is required.

* Parents can also enroll their children ages 3-12 into Y-Fit Kids classes.

Classes include ballet, yoga, hip/hop, Zumba, cycling, outdoor fitness fusion and more. Classes begin Sept. 13 and run for 10 weeks.

Cost is $50 for members and $90 for nonmembers. Registration is required.

The annual Michelle Goldstein’s Spirit of Life Luncheon will pay tribute to Michelle Goldstein, who died during the 9-11 attack at the World Trade Center in New York City.

The event takes place at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13 at the Weston Hills Country Club, 2600 Country Club Way. Cost is $50.

Proceeds will benefit the Jewish Adoption and Foster Care Options Children’s Village.
