Lane closures Friday in Weston


Roadway paving of the roundabout at Bonaventure Boulevard and Blatt Boulevard in Weston will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.

The intersection will be closed during this time. Motorists are urged to seek alternate routes to avoid delays.

Halloween Safety Expo set for Friday in Weston


Weston and the Broward Sheriff’s Office will provide kids with a safe alternative to neighborhood trick or treating: The Halloween Safety Expo is set for 6-9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29 at Tequesta Trace Park, 600 Indian Trace.

This year, they have partnered with Joe DiMaggio’s Children’s Hospital to provide live entertainment, bounce houses, police and fire equipment and exhibits, DJ music, a Teddy Bear Clinic, child ID activity and more.

There will also be a pumpkin patch where kids can decorate a pumpkin and take it home for a small fee, and there will be a bloodmobile accepting donations.

Changes to Bus Route 23 in Weston start Oct. 31


Broward County Transit has announced service modifications to Bus Route 23 which will affect Weston riders beginning Oct. 31.

-- Service along the route will occur every 60 minutes during weekday peak hours from 6:30 to 10:20 a.m. and 3:30 to 7:20 p.m. Midday, evening and weekend service will be discontinued.
-- On weekdays, a southbound trip will be added from Sawgrass Mills Mall at 6:30 a.m.
-- The route will travel along Dykes Road instead of Interstate 75 between Griffin Road and Sheridan Street.
-- Service inside the Weston Park of Commerce will be discontinued, and a new bus stop will be added at the Cleveland Clinic.

Weston foreign film series hits the theater next month

The Arts Council of Greater Weston presents the fifth annual Weston Foreign Film Series with the "Empire of Silver" (China) at 5 and 7:15 p.m. Monday, Nov. 8 at the Weston 8 Cinema, (1338 SW 160th Ave.

It's being shown in cooperation with the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival.

"Empire of Sliver" is a powerful drama released in 2009 that tells the saga of China’s “Wall Street” more than a century ago (English subtitles).

Cost is $30 for the series of all five films, $7 for single tickets.

Residents may purchase tickets starting Nov. 1 at the following locations: Community Bank of Broward, 1504 Weston Road; Weston Branch Library, 4205 Bonaventure Blvd.; and the Weston Community Center, 20200 Saddle Club Road.

Halloween Happening set for Saturday


The Weston Town Center is hosting a Halloween Happening Pumpkin Patch from 1-6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23.

Cypress Bay High will be on hand to sell pumpkins, with proceeds benefiting the school's music department. Those who buy will be entered into a raffle for a Nintendo Wii.

Other festivities include a pumpkin carving contest, face painting, bounce house, caricatures, children's dance performances and more.

Weston YMCA hosting Halloween party on Friday


Members and nonmembers are welcome at the annual YMCA Halloween Party, set for 6-7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22 at 20201 Saddle Club Road.

There will be fun and spooky games, arts and crafts, a pumpkin patch and a family friendly haunted house.

Weston high school volleyball game to be broadcast this weekend


Sports Blitz Game Time, a locally produced sports show that airs Broward high school and college games of the week on BECON-TV, will be at Cypress Bay High School at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, as the Lightning host the Lady Spartans of Hollywood Hills High School in girls' volleyball action.

The game marks the regular season finale for both teams.

The matchup will air on BECON-TV (Comcast channel 19, DirecTV, DISH Network and AT&T U-Verse channel 63) at 10:30 a.m. and 11 p.m. Oct. 23 and 24.

Weston tennis tournament begins Oct. 29


The USTA's eighth annual City of Weston Tennis Tournament is set for Oct. 29-Nov. 1 at the Weston Tennis Center, 16451 Racquet Club Road.

Entrance fee is $33 for singles and $18 per player for doubles, and the tournament is open to men and women.

Weston library temporary closed in November


The Weston Branch Library, 4205 Bonaventure Blvd., will be closed from 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5 to 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 8 for air conditioning maintenance.

Library customers will be referred to other Broward County libraries until the maintenance is completed.

"The Tooth Fairy" comes to Weston Nov. 6

The next Movie in the Park is "The Tooth Fairy," starring South Florida's own Dwayne Johnson, set for 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6 at Weston Regional Park, 20200 Saddle Club Road.

A tough minor league hockey player discourages a youngster's hopes and he's sentenced to one week's hard labor as a real tooth fairy.

Bring lawn chairs or blankets. Full-length feature films are projected onto a giant inflatable screen at the park's event stage.

Early voting opens in Weston today


Early voting is available in Weston at the Weston Branch Library, 4205 Bonaventure Blvd., starting today and running through Oct. 30.

Voters should bring photo identification that includes a signature. Besides a state-issued driver's license or ID card, other accepted forms include passports, debit or credit cards with photos, and identification for: members of the military, students, retirement centers, neighborhood associations or public assistance.

If the photo ID does not contain the voter's signature, another piece of identification with a signature is required.

A voter registration card is not required. Bring your driver's license. It's the identification poll workers can process most quickly.

Also, you're allowed to bring a marked sample ballot, palm card or other information into the polling place to help you remember your choices.

A call to artists for Weston event


Artists, photographers, sculptors, creative crafts and jewelry artisans, etc. in the greater Weston area are sought to participate in the Fifth Annual Weston Artwalk and Showtime Outdoor Festival, set for 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Feb. 27 at Weston Town Center.

This event is presented by Arts Council of Greater Weston and sponsored by the city. Artists must be 21 or older.

Weston's Get Fit initiative's first testing day on Wednesday


The Get Fit Weston program will have its first testing day from 8 a.m.-noon Wednesday at the Sheinberg Family YMCA, 20201 Saddle Club Road.

Free residential bulk pick-up in Weston later this month


Weston will offer free residential bulk pick-up Oct. 20-23.

For single-family homes, bulk trash collection will correspond with your regularly scheduled collection day (Wednesday-Friday), and all bulk trash must be placed curbside by 7 a.m.

Your bulk collection day is your regular garbage collection day only. If items are not collected by the end of the day, they will be collected the following day. It is dependent upon the volume of items placed out by the community.

Multi-family units with Dumpster service will be picked up by 7 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23.

Hazardous waste materials will not be accepted.

Weston schools visited this month for fire safety


This month, Weston’s Broward Sheriff's Office fire-rescue units will visit Weston area elementary schools (public and private) to teach children the importance of fire safety education.

This year's campaign includes the theme "When Fire Strikes, Get Out and Stay Out!"

The educational component is also designed to educate people about the importance of smoke alarms and encourages everyone to take the steps necessary to update and maintain their home smoke alarm protection. Fire Prevention Week runs through Oct. 9.
