Weston New Year's closings reminder

All Weston administrative offices (City Hall, the Community Center, the Public Works Services Center, and the Building Department) will be closed on Friday, Dec. 31 in observance of New Year’s Day.

On Dec. 31 and Jan. 1, all city parks will close at 6 p.m. There will be regularly scheduled garbage collection.

Weston hosting lacrosse tourney next month

The Florida Youth Lacrosse Foundation will host the 10th annual Men’s Florida Lacrosse Classic Jan. 14-16 at Tequesta Trace Park, 600 Indian Trace in Weston.

The tourney will consist of 37 teams from across the United States competing in more than 100 games being played over the three-day event.

Admission to the games is free and open to the public. Revenue for the foundation is generated through the sale of a variety of collateral material at the game, as well as a participation fee for players.

Weston to offer Tennis in No Time program

Midtown Athletic Club in Weston is hosting the Tennis in No Time program, which patterns itself as "the world’s only patented tennis learning program which transforms beginners into players in just three short weeks."

The club is offering the first of its three TNT sessions beginning Feb. 5. Sessions are open to the public and cost $115. Each session is comprised of six 90-minute lessons (two per week) where participants learn the basics of tennis, including the serve, forehand, backhand and net play for singles and doubles.

Broward League of Cities announces 2011 scholarship and student ambassador program

The Broward League of Cities is now accepting applications for the inaugural year of the Student Ambassador Program.

Offered to high school juniors who are residents of Broward County and attending any Broward public or charter school, the program will provide four students who plan to pursue a career in public administration, political science or other government-related field with firsthand insight into public service.

The four selected students will represent their high schools at Broward League of Cities general membership and board of directors meetings and other functions, starting in February.

The organization is also accepting applications for the Scholarship for Government Studies, a $1,000 college scholarship which is awarded to four students from across Broward County who plan to pursue an education in government studies, political science or other government-related field.

"Rapunzel" coming to Weston

The Cypress Bay Theater (18600 Vista Park Blvd.) will be hosting a 1 p.m. performance of "Rapunzel" on Jan. 29.

"Rapunzel" is an enticing classic complete with the long-haired beauty, Prince Charming and the evil witch. Rapunzel's parents, starving and destitute, make a pact with a nearby witch to give her their first born child in exchange for food. This funny tale shows how a possessive mother, a tentative prince, and a naive young girl all grow up in a surprising way.

Next installment in Weston foreign film series announced

The Israeli film "Kadosh" is the next in the Arts Council of Greater Weston's foreign film series.

The movie will have showings at 5 and 7:15 p.m. Monday, Jan. 10 at the Weston 8 Cinema, 1338 SW 160th Ave. in Sunrise. Tickets are $30 for the series or $7 a showing. Single tickets will be sold at the door after the season ticket holders are seated.

"Kadosh" is an Israeli drama that tells the story of two sisters who become victims of a patriarchal ultra-orthodox Jewish community in the Mea Shearim quarter of Jerusalem. It is the third movie in a trilogy that focuses on three major Israeli cities.

Tickets can be purchased at Community Bank of Broward (1504 Weston Road), Weston Branch Library (4205 Bonaventure Blvd.) or the Weston Community Center (20200 Saddle Club Road).

Guests attending the early showing are invited to stay for a discussion with Hal Axler, executive director of the Fort Lauderdale Foreign Film Festival/Paradiso Cinema.

Weston celebrating youth football championship win

The under-11 Weston Warriors 110 Team recently became the National Youth Football Champions for its division.

The Warriors beat Chicago 33-0 and Georgia 25-0 in a Thanksgiving tournament. This talented group of boys are also 2010 Football AYFL Super Bowl Champions.

Christmas tree curbside collection dates in Weston

Christmas tree curbside collection is offered to residents beginning Jan. 3 and ending Jan. 29.

Place trees curbside in a way to not obstruct regular garbage cart collection. Trees should be undecorated for recycling.

"Marmaduke" to be shown on big screen in Weston next month

"Marmaduke" is the next in the Moonlight Movies in the Park series, set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8 at Weston Regional Park, 20200 Saddle Club Road.

Full-length feature films are shown and projected for free onto a giant inflatable screen.

A suburban family moves to a new neighborhood in Orange County, Calif., with their Great Dane, who has a tendency to wreak havoc in his own oblivious way.

Weston holiday closings

Weston city offices will be closed Friday, Dec. 24 and 31. City parks will close at 6 p.m. on Dec. 24th, and 25th, as well as Jan. 1.

There will be no garbage collection Christmas Day and until Monday, Dec. 27. Garbage collection will run regularly on Dec. 31.

SAT classes start in Weston next month

The Weston Community Center (20200 Saddle Club Road) is offering an SAT class for ages 15-20.

The instructor, Jeff Steinberg, developed this course in 1990 and taught it at the University of Miami. Content includes commonly overlooked strategies and techniques for beating the SAT.

Sessions begin the week of Jan. 16 for the March 12 test.

Residents who scroll down to the bottom right of the Weston website homepage (http://www.westonfl.org/) can notice a golden glow around one of the leaves and also around the beak on the heron.

By clicking, visitors are linked to information on Weston’s natural habitats. The feature provides information on the various types of wildlife that populate the areas. This includes the benefits and precautions that should be taken when living in proximity to the Everglades.

Click on the leaf and you are transported to the city’s Landscaping and Wetland Mitigation page, where you will find facts and history on the development and maintenance of the wetland preservation areas within Weston.

Weston Library now reserving Kindles

Broward County Library customers can now reserve or borrow a Kindle, Nook or Sony
Electronic Reader at the Weston Branch Library.

Those interested must have a library card and complete a request form in person at the library to get on a waiting list. When an e-reader is available, the customer will be offered a one-time, per-person opportunity to select a book to have downloaded to their reader for two weeks.

As collections grow, there will be more books available on the readers.

Advisory regarding new roundabout in Weston

Weston residents are asked to use precaution when traveling along Bonaventure Boulevard as construction of a new roundabout at Saddle Club Road is underway.

The intersection is currently a four-way stop with four-lane roads but is not approved by Broward County for a traffic signal.

While there will be intermittent lane closures during construction, the intersection will remain open.

Temple in Weston offering Chinese dinner on Christmas Eve

Temple Dor Dorim (2360 Glades Circle in Weston) will be have a "Moo Shu" Shabbat and a Chinese dinner at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 24.

There will be a Shabbat service, Chinese dinner and entertainment. Cost for the all-you-can-eat feast is $10 per adult and $5 per child.

Classic car show set in Weston this weekend

A Classic Car Show will be held 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11 at the Carolina Ale House, 2618 Weston Road in Weston.

The event will benefit the family of Bill Trapani, who died earlier this year. Proceeds will go to an educational fund for his two young sons.

Dash plaques will be awarded to the first 50, as well as the opportunity for trophies and special awards. Festivities include complimentary breakfast and lunch, DJ Scott The Music Man, vendors, door prizes and more.

Registration opens at 9 a.m. Fee is $20. Vendor fee is $25.

Weston helps in Broward County food drive

Broward County’s “365 Food Drive” continues, with more than 10,402 pounds of non-perishable items already collected for local food pantries.

While all non-perishable food items are welcome, each month has a theme or focus. For December, the focus is on items for a fabulous winter holiday meal

Collection boxes are available at the Weston Branch Library (4205 Bonaventure Blvd.) Hours are 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Wednesday and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday.

Weston road closures for this weekend's Run For Tomorrow

There will be a number of road closures in Weston for the 2010 Run for Tomorrow, set for 6-10:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 12, beginning and ending at the Weston Town Center.

This Rotary Cub-sponsored holiday event features a 5K run, half marathon and 1.5-mile fun walk.

Bonaventure Boulevard will be closed from 6-10 a.m. in both directions, between Royal Palm Boulevard and South Post Road.


Delays for 6:30-10:30 a.m. are:

· Royal Palm Boulevard, both directions, between Bonaventure Boulevard and Saddle Club Road
· Glades Parkway, both directions, between Saddle Club Road and Glades Circle South
· Bonaventure Boulevard, both directions, between Three Village Road and Royal Palm Boulevard, and between South Post and Griffin roads.

Delays for 6-8 a.m. are:

· Town Center Circle
· Town Center Boulevard, northbound, between Town Center Circle and Three Village Road
· Town Center Boulevard, southbound, between Town Center Circle and Royal Palm Boulevard.
· Three Village Road, eastbound, between Town Center and Bonaventure boulevards.

Orange safety cones and signs will designate the lanes to be used for runners and vehicles. The Broward Sheriff's Office will have deputies stationed at intersections to assist with traffic flow.

Arts Council of Weston partners with library for exhibit

The Arts Council of Greater Weston will be hosting the Fifth Annual Student Artist Showcase in February.

The exhibit will be open for the public to view at the Weston Branch Library from Feb. 4-14.

Students from grades pre-K to 12 can participate and offer their creative works.
