Weston Foreign Film Series continues next month

The Weston Foreign Film Series concludes on March 14 with the Swedish romance "As It Is In Heaven."

There will be showings at 5 and 7:15 p.m at the Weston 8 Cinema, 1338 SW 160th Ave. in Sunrise.

Cost is $7. Pre-sale tickets are limited to 200 for each performance. Single tickets will be sold at the door after the season ticket holders are seated.

Season tickets are available at the Community Bank of Broward, Weston Branch, 1504 Weston Road; Weston Branch Library (Friends Bookstore), 4205 Bonaventure Blvd.; or the Weston Community Center, 20200 Saddle Club Road.

This film is about a successful symphonic conductor who suddenly gives up his career to return to his childhood village. He has come home to brood and enjoy his misery in solitude but is reluctantly drawn back into the community through music. He makes friends and enemies, but will he find love?

Bike event passing through Weston Sunday

The Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Tour de Broward bicycle event will pass through Weston between 7:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27.

All intersections will remain open, but caution is advised at the following affected intersections:

State Road 84 at Bonaventure Boulevard (south of 595)
Bonaventure at Indian Trace
Bonaventure at Royal Palm Boulevard
State Road 84 at Glades Parkway (south of 595)
Bonaventure at Griffin Road

Lights out along Weston roads; use caution

Street lights along Royal Palm Boulevard, west of Bonaventure Boulevard to Island Way and Island Way from Royal Palm Boulevard to the Jasmine Island entrance, will be out until Friday, Feb. 25.

FPL crews are replacing a damaged switch cabinet. Residents should drive with caution.

This is a story about a lonely clown who builds his own dog. The free show is targeted for ages 3-10 with parent/guardian.

Weston Library celebrates fifth anniversary with day of events Wednesday

Ron Bergeron, a commissioner of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, will appear at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16 to help celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Weston Branch Library, 4205 Bonaventure Blvd.

Bergeron is donating three books on the Everglades.

Also on tap is toddler story time for ages 2-3 from 10:30-11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.-noon. Tickets are required and can be picked up 20 minutes before the readings start.

A Book Journeys book club will be meeting 5-6 p.m. in the Youth Services Story Room. The English Cafe will provide the opportunity to practice English conversation. The day concludes with a book discussion 6-7:30 p.m. on "A Reliable Wife" by Robert Goolrick with librarian Priya Anand.

Watch the latest "Shrek" film on a big outdoor screen

Weston has announced "Shrek Forever After" as its next Moonlight Movies in the Park, set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 5 at the event stage in Weston Regional Park, 20200 Saddle Club Road.

The film will be presented on an inflatable screen. The showing is free, and residents can bring lawn chairs and blankets.

Weston Cup soccer tourney taking place President's Day weekend

The Weston Cup will feature 444 teams from Florida and around the country Feb. 19-21 at Weston's Vista Park and Regional Park, and Central Park and Pine Island Park in Plantation. The tournament, comprised of five divisions with boys and girls ages 8-19, will use 30 fields in both cities.

College coaches have been invited to attend and scout the level of talent that this tournament attracts. The Weston Cup is the largest annual fundraiser for the Weston FC travel soccer program.

Weston declares 2011 Relay For Life of Weston Weekend at recent meeting

Weston issued a proclamation at a recent meeting naming April 16-17 as 2011 Relay For Life of Weston Weekend.

The official proclamation was presented to Ross Sabath, this year’s Relay For Life of Weston event chairman. Sabath is a Weston resident and a cancer survivor. The weekend of festivities will emanate from the Cypress Bay High School football field and stadium.

With budgets diminishing, teachers are looking to the community to help.

DonorsChoose.org currently lists four current projects at Weston schools looking for funding:

- Eagle Point Elementary School is hoping to purchase 50 copies of the ScienceSaurus student handbook they can use at home for homework and studying.

- Indian Trace Elementary wants to purchase books on its student reading list. The school is also hoping to garner donations for 20 write and wipe boards.

- Country Isles Elementary is raising money for three children area rugs and reading group sets of popular book series, such as Harry Potter.

Weston offering AARP driving program this month

Weston is offering AARP’s 55 Alive/Mature Driving Program from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26 at the Weston Community Center, 20200 Saddle Club Road.

The session is designed as a refresher course in safe driving and geared toward older motorists dealing with age-related physical changes. The course is available to anyone 50 and older.

Registration is required. Call 954-385-9920. Those attending are asked to bring a bagged lunch, and members should bring their AARP card.

Cost is $12 for AARP members, $14 for nonmembers.
