Chlorine will be used in Weston's water treatment system to provide additional protection against bacteria through Friday, May 13.

The treatment is a common practice for water suppliers and mandated by the Broward County Department of Health. Officials say this procedure does not cause any adverse health effects, but some residents may notice a slight change in the taste, odor or color of the water during this period.

The Weston Parks & Recreation Department is looking for up to five Weston residents who have recently gained U.S. citizenship to ride as grand marshals in this year’s July 4th Parade.

Rabbi Gershom Sizomu, of the Abayudaya Jews of Uganda, will be speaking at Temple Dor Dorim, 2360 Glades Circle in Weston, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 10.

He is the first black rabbi from Sub-Saharan Africa to be ordained at an American rabbinical school.

The Abayudaya, whose tribal name means "people of Judah," trace their Jewish origins to the turn of the 20th century.

Former Miami Dolphins player and Hall of Fame great Dwight Stephenson will be among those in attendance at YMCA Broward's Healthy Kids Day, starting at noon Saturday, April 16 at the Sheinberg Family YMCA of Weston, 20201 Saddle Club Road.

Healthy Kids Day is the Y’s national initiative to improve the health and well-being of families across the country.

Festivities include a hip-hop class and camp sing-along, ballet class, sports obstacle courses and more. Officials will be blowing whistles at noon against obesity, encouraging kids to take part in exercise and healthy eating.

Weston is offering AARP’s 55 Alive/Mature Driving Program from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, May 7 at the Weston Community Center, 20200 Saddle Club Road.

The classroom session is designed as a refresher course in safe driving for older motorists dealing with age-related physical changes. It is open to anyone age 50 and older. Registration is required.

Hispanic Unity of Florida is hosting Entrepreneur Summit 2011 from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday, May 10 at the Hyatt Bonaventure Resort & Spa, 250 Racquet Club Road in Weston.

The event will present the opportunity for current and future business owners to connect with experts.

George Feldenkreis, chairman and CEO of Perry Ellis International, will be the keynote speaker at the event’s luncheon. Tom Tworoger, chairman of the Entrepreneurship Department at the H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship at Nova Southeastern University in Davie, also will be on hand.

The intersection of Saddle Club Road and Bonaventure Boulevard will be closed from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday, April 22 for paving of the roundabout.

There is no school, but motorists are still urged to take an alternate route. Residents should expect delays April 18-21 as the roadway is prepared for paving.

The Annual Royal Egg Hunt is set for 9:45 a.m. Saturday, April 23 at baseball fields 1-4 at Weston Regional Park, 20200 Saddle Club Road.

The free event is open to children age 10 and younger and will feature 15,000 candy-filled eggs. The Royal Bunny will be on hand to start off all the egg hunts, separated into age groups on different fields.

Bounce houses will be available until noon.

Relay For Life of Weston gets under way Saturday, April 16 at the Cypress Bay High School track, 18600 Vista Park Blvd.

The event, open to the community, begins at 6 p.m. with the opening ceremony. Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature event and fundraiser.

Cancer survivors are still being signed up to be honored during the opening ceremony, take part in the Survivor’s Victory Lap and enjoy a complimentary dinner after. Cancer survivors are encouraged to register by emailing westonrelayforlife@comcast.net or register at the event, beginning at 4 p.m.

Festivities include a silent auction, raffle, guest speakers, entertainment and a luminaria ceremony.

The law firm Weiss Serota Helfman Pastoriza Cole & Boniske is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year by sponsoring a $1,000 essay contest in Weston for high school seniors.

The contest topic is “Why My City Is Special,” highlighting why they consider their city a great place to live. The essays should be no longer than 500 words and submitted online at essays@wsh-law.com. Rules and additional information can be found at www.wsh-law.com/essaycontest.

The winning essay will win $1,000 for the writer, and he or she will have the opportunity to read the essay at the next City Commission meeting.
