Book fair planned in Weston

The Friends of the Library Book Fair is set for 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, June 11 at the Weston Branch Library, 4205 Bonaventure Blvd.

Chapter books (hard and soft covers) for young readers, how-to books, children's books, videotapes and more will be on sale.

Road closures in Weston for Memorial Day 5K


There will be a number of road closures for the 23rd Annual Memorial Day Classic 5K run/walk at Weston Town Center, 1675 Market St., from 5-10 a.m. Monday.

These closures include Main Street, Bell Tower Lane (Main Street to Town Center Circle) and Market Street (Main Street to Town Center Circle).

Delays expected 7-8 a.m. at the following:
Town Center Circle and Town Center Boulevard
Town Center Boulevard and Three Village Road
Three Village Road and Bonaventure Boulevard
Three Village Road and Country Isles Road
Three Village Road and Indian Trace
Indian Trace and Bonaventure Boulevard
Indian Trace and Town Center Boulevard

Recommended alternate routes to get to the Weston Road corridor would be to use Royal Palm Boulevard or Saddle Club Road.

Weston restaurant helps teenager injured in car accident

Residents who come out to the Carolina Ale House, 2618 Weston Road in Weston, from 5:30-10 p.m. tonight (May 25) and mention Brian Corbett will have 15 percent of all purchases go to his recovery fund.

Corbett remains in Lee Memorial Hospital after an April accident along Alligator Alley, which killed two of the passengers. The teen sustained serious injuries to his neck and spine. Proceeds will help with his growing medical bills and expenses.

Spin-A-Thon to take place in Weston for Jason Taylor Foundation

Midtown Athletic Club, 2300 Royal Palm Blvd. in Weston, will host the 2nd Annual Katina Taylor Spin-A-Thon from 6-8:30 p.m. Thursday, June 9.

Proceeds will benefit the Jason Taylor Foundation.

Registration is required and the cost to participate is $99 per spin bike and $20 per child for the Kids Cardio Tennis Camp, which also will be offered. Non-Midtown members are also invited to participate and may bring children at a cost of $45 per child for the camp.

The Spin-A-Thon will include 38 stationary, high-performance spin bikes. Riders will pedal their way to music produced by Miami-based DJ Irie.

The tennis camp is open to ages 6-15. Festivities include prizes, games and autograph signings by event host Katina Taylor and her husband Jason, a former Miami Dolphin and New York Jet.

Free health screenings offered in Weston on Friday

Cleveland Clinic Florida will be offering free health screenings in recognition of American Stroke Month. They're set for 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday, May 27 at its Jagelman Conference Center, 2950 Cleveland Clinic Blvd.

The screenings will be offered by appointment only and will include checks of height/weight, blood pressure/pulse, glucose and cholesterol screenings, four-limb EKGs and physician consultations.

Weston soccer players honored by city commissioners

City commissioners recently honored the Cypress Bay Lightning boys' soccer team, which took home the Florida High School Athletic Association 2011 Varsity Boys Soccer 6A Championship.

The team defeated Miami Varela in the state championship game at Pepin Stadium at the University of Tampa in February.

Student Council members from Everglades Elementary recently visited Weston's City Hall.

They were given the opportunity to learn how local government and city departments function, as well as a presentation from the Broward Sheriff's Office and Fire Station 81.

Efforts benefit Weston student injured in car accident

Efforts to raise money to cover mounting hospital bills for Cypress Bay High School student Brian Corbett are under way.

The 18-year-old remains hospitalized after an April single-car accident along Alligator Alley that took the lives of classmates Juan Zambrano and Sasha Abitante.

Weston Youth Police Services accepting applications

The Broward Sheriff's Office Police Services Academy, in coordination with Weston University, is accepting applications for students ages 12-16 for an eight-week program starting in June.

Those in the program will be introduced to law enforcement through lectures and field trips covering such topics as defensive tactics and crime scene investigations.

Classes will be Monday nights at the Weston Police Services Building. Applications will be accepted through June 13.

Hazardous waste and electronics collection event set in Weston

The annual free Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Collection event is set for 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, May 15 at the Public Works Service Center, 2599 S. Post Road in Weston.

Accepted will be used or leftover contents of consumer products that contain chemicals with one of the four characteristics: toxic, ignitable, corrosive or reactive as defined by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Items that fit this description include oil and latex paints and thinners, used motor oil, auto fluids and gasoline solvents, pesticides, fertilizers, pool chemicals, drain cleaners, tires, mercury, rechargeable and automobile batteries and electronics such as computers and televisions.

Next Parent's Night Out in Weston on Saturday

The next Parent’s Night Out is set for 5-10 p.m. Saturday, May 7 at the Sheinberg Family YMCA of Weston, 20201 Saddle Club Road.

The Y offers this for moms and dads one Saturday each month for parents of children ages 5-12.

Activities include: cooperation and sport skills, swimming, arts and crafts, sports, games, a pizza party and more.
