The grades are in, with all nine Weston elementary and middle schools receiving an "A" from the Florida Department of Education.
High school results will be released in December.
School grades indicate how well a school is performing based on state standards.

The Weston Branch of American Association of University Women is partnering with Princeton Review to administer practice tests in ACT and SAT at no cost for the tests on Saturdays in October.
The organization is targeting women who stopped with a high school diploma graduation and now wish to go to college, as well as high school girls who want another opportunity to take practice tests.
Call 954-384-4460 or email kanandam@att.net to reserve a slot. Princeton Review administers the practice tests free of charge but still pay $10 to AAUW Weston to cover the expenses of organizing the offering.

Weston anticipates more than $250,000 annual savings in energy and maintenance costs in addition to improved light quality with the installation of more than 1,000 Philips Roadstar luminaires.
The city estimated that the retrofit solution, which uses existing lighting poles along city-owned public thoroughfares, will save up to $160,000 in energy costs and $100,000 in maintenance expenses annually.
The luminaires came with a 10-year limited warranty and were funded, in part, by a federal Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant.

The Weston Branch Friends of the Library was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation for Outstanding Achievement in support of youth programming at the annual Broward County Friends of the Library Awards Luncheon.
The program raises funds by selling new and nearly new books, books on CDs, videos and magazines in the book shop inside the library.
Several large book fairs are staged every year, with the profits used to provide special events and items needed by the library.

The Weston Philharmonic Society will present its SUMMERFEST 2011 program at 8 p.m. Saturday, July 23 at Temple Dor Dorim, 2360 Glades Circle.
The Hungarian Remenyi Ede Chamber Orchestra will be joined in a cultural exchange by musicians from the Symphony of the Americas.
The concert will feature the music of Mozart, Vivaldi, Tchaikovsky, Vitali, Boccherini, Massenet, the Argentine tangos of Piazolla and rhythmic Hungarian music of Leo Weiner. The concert will be highlighted by solo performances by Hungarian-born, Symphony of the Americas’ violin virtuoso Laszlo Pop.
Tickets are $20, $10 for students (up to age 18; must show proof). Tickets may be purchased in advance at the Community Bank of Broward or at Comerica Bank, or at the door.

Imagine Charter School at Weston recently received a 2011 National Promising Practices Award for its Character Development Progress Report.
The Character Education Partnership named 260 schools and districts from across the United States, as well as Mexico and Puerto Rico. Nearly 500 applicants submitted practices for recognition, with the school winning the award for the second time.

Broward County and Kiwanis Divisions 23 and 24 have joined forces for the last 10 years with Christmas in July activities benefiting local homeless children.
The Weston Branch Library, 4205 Bonaventure Blvd., will be collecting items from residents through Friday, July 1.
Among the donations accepted for donation are: pants, slacks, shorts, skirts, dresses, books, diapers and similar items. Organizers remind residents only new items should be donated for a boy or girl, infant up to 19 years old. To date, the program has helped more than 7,500 children in Broward County.

Weston will have a morning of festivities in celebration of July 4.
The day kicks off with the 5K Run/Walk, sponsored by Broward Health Weston, at 7 a.m starting at the Weston Town Center. Registration is $16 in advance and $20 on race day between 5:45-6:45 a.m.

The 4th of July Hometown Parade "Celebrating the American Dream" will follow at 10:30 a.m., featuring participants from throughout the city. The parade will start at the corner of Town Center Boulevard and Three Village Road and run through Town Center to the heart of Main Street.

The Miami Heat's Udonis Haslem will appear for a meet-and-greet and autograph signing for the opening of the JUICEBLENDZ Weston Café, 4579 Weston Road. The celebration is set for 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, June 25.
A minimum purchase of one smoothie is required per autograph. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the JUICEBLENDZ Foundation, which supports a variety of local school fundraising efforts and youth-related organizations.
Festivities will also include the Miami Heat Dancers, a live DJ, face painting, a balloon artist and more.

Local photographer Butch Stark provided 36 pictures for an exhibit at the Weston Branch Library, 4205 Bonaventure Blvd.
The photographs portray families, many from Weston, in classic and informal poses, children dressed for special occasions, and costumed as fairies and mermaids. The work will be on display through July.

The Weston City Commission recently honored members of the Weston Girl Scout Troop 10258 (Daisy) and Troop 10575 (Juniors) for their efforts in the community.
The troops will be receiving bronze level Presidential Volunteer Service Awards for contributing more than 50 hours of community service.
Work the troops have done include collecting coupons for military families, visiting a nursing home and making pictures for Color a Smile, which is distributed to homebound seniors, and dedicating their time to beautification efforts at Indian Trace Elementary School.

Lt. James Neylon and others from the department welcomed Weston students in April.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office Department of Fire Rescue held a traditional fire service retirement ceremony for Weston Lt. James Neylon at Weston Fire Station No. 81 after 32 years of service.
James Neylon began his firefighting career as a volunteer for Broward County in 1979 and has worked throughout Broward County. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in 1991 and began serving Weston in 2005.

The Second Annual Katina Taylor Spin-A-Thon at the Midtown Athletic Club raised more than $12,000 for the Jason Taylor Foundation. The event also featured appearances from former Miami Dolphins players Jason Taylor and Zach Thomas, who participated in the Spin-A-Thon with his sister.

The Operation Medicine Cabinet & Shred-A-Thon is set 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, July 9 at the Broward Sheriff's Office Weston District Office, 17300 Royal Palm Blvd.
Residents can bring unused, unwanted or expired medications for safe disposal. The event goes along with the Sheriff's Office's efforts to help prevent prescription drug abuse. Those who participate will receive a $5 gift card while supplies last.
Residents also can shred away identity theft by disposing of their personal documents, check stubs, credit card offers, receipts and any other material that might contain sensitive data. This service is free of charge, but there is a five-box maximum.

The Sheinberg Family YMCA of Weston, 20201 Saddle Club Road, has opened registration for its coed softball team.
Teams meet from 7-10 p.m. Friday, July 8-Sept. 9 at Tequesta Trace Park in Weston. Each team should have an equal amount of male and female players (18 and older). Team roster should have a maximum of 14 and a minimum of 10 players; new players can not be added when playoffs start.
Cost for a team is $700 or $70 for an individual.

University School's "How to Succeed in Business".
The Critics’ Awards Program (Cappies) was recently staged at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.
Among those recognized, University School's "How to Succeed in Business" won for Best Musical. The Sagemont School in Weston won the Cappie Award for Best Play for its production of "Dracula.
The Broward Center has hosted the awards since the South Florida chapter was founded in 2002 as part of the national nonprofit organization’s recognition of high school theater programs.

Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue unveiled the new Broward Emergency Critical Care Assistance (BECCA) program at a press conference at Fire Station 81 in Weston.
Named after 5-year-old Rebecca Hyman, the BECCA program will help parents document and keep track of their children's complex medical history to arriving firefighter/paramedics during an emergency.
