Back to School Bash in Weston raises thousands for two local charities

Former Miami Dolphins players Twan Russell and O.J. McDuffie were among those in attendance for the first Back to School Bash at Weston Town Center.

The fundraiser generated more than $3,500 for the Russell Life Skills & Reading Foundation and the O.J. McDuffie Catch 81 Foundation. Ronald McDonald made a special appearance with a check presentation to Russell Life Skills for $20,000.

Residents were asked to bring school supplies to support the charities.

Local vendors and sponsors provided attendees with information, activities, programs, entertainment and giveaways. Former NFL alumni, Andrea Penoyer from TLC’s “Police Women of Broward County" and others came out to support the fundraising efforts.

Free women's self-defense class set in Weston

American Top Team in Weston, 2750 Glades Circle, #300, is hosting a free women’s self-defense class from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10.

This class is to educate and empower women on personal safety, as well as emphasize the importance of being aware of your surroundings, how to avoid a potential assault, and self-defense techniques.

Participants will receive hands-on instruction from professional self-defense experts, as well as see how it works on instructors wearing technical training safety gear. The class is open 13 and older.

BSO Fire Rescue hosting open house in Weston

Broward Sheriff's Office Fire Rescue is hosting an open house from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3 at Weston Fire Station No. 81, 17350 Royal Palm Blvd.

Residents will have the opportunity to tour the station, meet personnel, paint a real fire truck and meet Sparky the Fire Prevention Dog. Hot dogs, cotton candy and snow cones will be served.

9/11 memorial event in Weston next month

Weston will be hosting an event commemorating the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks from 5-6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11 at the Weston Amphitheater in Weston's Town Center Park, 1900 Bell Tower Lane.

This event will include state and local leaders, the Broward Sheriff’s Office, members of the Weston Clergy Group, the Cypress Bay High School choir, a moment of silence and a dove release.

Mosquito spraying to take place in Weston tomorrow morning

Broward County's Mosquito Control Section will spray for mosquitoes between 4 and 6:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, weather permitting.

This aerial spraying will include all of Weston and a small portion of Sunrise.

Residents with breathing difficulties should remain indoors.

The area to be sprayed is between Interstate 75/595 to the north, Griffin Road to the south, Southwest 150th Avenue to the east and Southwest 209th Avenue to the west.

Weston hospital continues 'For Your Health' web chats

Weston's Cleveland Clinic Florida will be hosting three "For Your Health" web chats.

The live, online health chats are designed to educate participants and encourage healthy lifestyle choices.

The free chats will be presented by two of Cleveland Clinic Florida's top medical specialists and can be accessed at www.clevelandclinic.org/webchats. Click "join" to participate. Questions can be submitted in advance.

- The first will be noon-1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17 discussing "Concussion and Injury Prevention In Athletes."

'Induction Day at Cooperstown' author to appear in Weston

Dennis Corcoran will discuss his book "Induction Day at Cooperstown - A History of the Baseball Hall of Fame Ceremony" from 2-3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25 at the Weston Branch Library's Multipurpose Room, 4205 Bonaventure Blvd.

The book covers the origins and history of the Hall of Fame ceremony. Corcoran goes into the election process, provides general information on each year’s class and induction ceremony, and includes concise biographical and career discussion for every Hall of Famer.

Entrance is free, and refreshments will be served. The book will be available for purchase for $30, with 15 percent of sales going to the Friends of the Library.

Weston health club hosting school suppy drive and pool party

Midtown Athletic Club, 2300 Royal Palm Blvd. in Weston, will host a back-to-school pool party and school supply donation drive from 2-4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19.

The event is open to members and their guests in exchange for a school supply donation. In addition, the general public is invited to participate with a donation of some type of school supply for entry.

Roller hockey registration ongoing in Weston

Residents can register now at a discounted rate for youth hockey at the Sheinberg Family YMCA of Weston.

Organizers say the program, available to boys and girls ages 5-14, will teach hockey skills in a fun, fast-paced setting with scrimmaging and practice techniques.

Early bird registration, through Sept. 17, is $100 for members and $150 for nonmembers. Regular registration runs Sept. 18-24. Cost is $115 and $165. The program runs Sept. 27-Dec. 10.

Weston company on board for Constitution Plaque Initiative

Junior Achievement of South Florida has teamed up with the Spirit of Freedom Experience for a new initiative aimed at educating and inspiring American students through the Constitution Plaque Initiative.

Plaques which replicate the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights will be housed in a new gallery to be built within JA World Patten Family Finance Park in Coconut Creek. This gallery and the special display of plaques will be unveiled at a special ceremony next month.

Numerous companies around the county are working with JA and the Spirit of Freedom, including Weston-based Windmill Advertising.

The plaques are identical in size and appearance to the original documents housed in the National Archives in Washington, D.C. The ultimate goal is to place these plaques in as many schools and facilities as possible across the country.

Weston school provides school supplies for 100 needy students in Alabama

Members of Sagemont School's National Elementary Honor Society, in conjunction with third- through fifth-grade Student Council members, put together a school-wide school supply drive at the end of the last year for students hit by the storm in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

The result was 100 full backpacks and additional supplies going to three schools affected for the upcoming school year. Two of the schools have been destroyed, and the third sustained substantial damage.

Sagemont worked with Allison Stoutland, whose husband Jeff is a former Miami Hurricanes offensive line coach and current offensive line coach for University of Alabama.

The children's book author started the drive called "Books for 'Bama," now named “Books and Backpacks for 'Bama.”

Volunteers needed for Coastal Cleanup

Volunteers are needed from throughout Broward County to participate in the 26th Annual International Coastal Cleanup, sponsored by the Ocean Conservancy and coordinated by Broward County Natural Resources Planning and Management. It's set for 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Sept. 17.

Participants can sign up on event day at any of the 12 cleanup locations throughout Broward County: Deerfield Beach, Pompano Beach, Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, Oakland Park, Hugh Taylor Birch State Park, Fort Lauderdale Beach Park, John U. Lloyd State Park, Dania Beach, Hollywood Beach North, Hollywood Beach Central, Hollywood Beach South and Hallandale Beach. Volunteers should bring a hat, sunscreen, gloves and water.

The Sheinberg Family YMCA of Weston, 20201 Saddle Club Road, has opened registration for several sports.

Registration is under way for girls volleyball (ages 8-15) through Sept. 18. Cost is $100 for members, $150 for nonmembers if you register by Sept. 11 ($115 and $165 otherwise).

Baseball, T-ball and softball are offered to boys and girls ages 4-14. The season runs Sept. 6-Nov. 12. Early bird registration costs $100 for members, $165 for nonmembers, and runs through Aug. 21 ($115 and $165 otherwise).

Backpack school supply drive ongoing in Weston

The annual Backpack School Supply Drive is under way in Weston.

The city asks residents to help families in the community who do not have the means to buy school supplies needed by their children.

Backpacks, pencils, erasers, pencil sharpeners, construction paper, dividers, three-ring binders, folders, spiral notebooks, rulers, writing tablet, glue sticks, markers and notebook are among the items accepted.

Those interested can drop off items to any of the locations below by Aug. 17.
