The Sheinberg Family YMCA of Weston, 20201 Saddle Club Road, is hosting a Fun Day for children ages 5-12 from 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29.

Activities include sports, swimming and more. Registration is required at www.ymcabroward.org or at the registration desk.

Cost is $35 for members and $45 for nonmembers.

Weston resident Jo-Anna Steele became paralyzed earlier this year after waking up in the middle of the night unable to move or feel anything from her waist down.

The once top ranked doubles tennis player has been on a roller coaster few months to determine a concrete medical diagnosis and rehabilitate.

Archbishop McCarthy high school student Matt Mila wanted to help and is hosting a fundraiser from 4-8 p.m. Oct. 15 at Indian Trace Park, 400 Indian Trace. Proceeds from the event will go toward her medical expenses.

Weston University is beginning its ninth year giving high school students a firsthand look at civics education.

Each year, 24 students are chosen from Cypress Bay and Western High School and the Sagemont School who will commit to the seven-month program. Students meet every month in a different city department, as well as interact with staff and elected officials.

Weston and the Broward Sheriff's Office will present its free Halloween Safety Expo from 6-9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28 at Tequesta Trace Park, 600 Indian Trace.

Festivities include DJ entertainment, bounce houses, an obstacle course and crafts activities. Public safety vehicles, including helicopters, fire engines and police motorcycle units, will be on site.

Residents are asked to bring a bag to collect Halloween goodies from the different stations.

Residents who make a purchase at YoBlendz from 2-6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18 at its Plantation (1832 N. Nob Hill Road) store and 5-9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25 at the Weston (1378 Weston Road) location will have a portion of their purchase donated to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.

Making Strides fundraisers and walks are staged throughout the country. The organization's 5K walk for Broward County is set for Sunday, Oct. 9 at Huizenga Plaza in Fort Lauderdale.

The money raised from frozen yogurt sales will go to Alexa Ramer's Steppin' for Stacey team, which is looking to raise $7,500 for this year's event.

What to expect?

Weston and the Weston Philharmonic Society will present the musical extravaganza “Cirque de la Symphonie" at 8 p.m. Oct. 29 at the Cypress Bay High School Auditorium in Weston.

The performance is a collaboration between the Symphony of the Americas and internationally acclaimed cirque performers.

Tickets are $20, $10 for age 18 and younger, and are available at the Weston Community Center (20200 Saddle Club Road), Community Bank of Broward (1504 Weston Road) and Comerica Bank (2800 Weston Road), or at the door the evening of the concert. The school is at 18600 Vista Park Blvd.

Children are encouraged to don their Halloween costumes (optional) in keeping with the theme of this event.

Weston is kicking off the Moonlight Movies in the Park series at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8 at the event stage in Weston Regional Park, 20200 Saddle Club Road.

The first of seven movies, shown monthly through April, will be "Toy Story 3." The film will be projected onto a giant inflatable screen on the event stage inside the park.

Residents may bring lawn chairs or blankets. Kids younger than 12 must be accompanied by an adult. For more information, call 954-389-4321.

Weston will host 9/11 Always Remembered, a community-wide commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

The hour-long event will take place at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Weston Town Center Park Amphitheater, 1900 Bell Tower Lane.

Federal, state and local leaders, the Broward Sheriff’s Office, members of the Weston Clergy Group, the Police Pipe & Drum Corps and the Cypress Bay Choir will be among those in attendance. The program will also include a helicopter flyover, a moment of silence and a dove release.

A 460-pound piece of steel will be on display. It was a part of the destroyed World Trade Center Towers and is on loan to St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church in Weston. The Town Center Park waterfront will also display special flags created for the 10th anniversary of 9-11 by the Flag of Honor/Flag of Heroes Project.

Officials at Archbishop McCarthy High School in Southwest Ranches say it is the first school within the Archdiocese of Miami to have introduced this level of technology for students’ daily use and the first high school in South Florida to have school-issued Apple iPads.

“We began this school year with 800 students using iPads, and we have an order in for 400 more,” said Principal Richard Jean. “... This changes everything in the classroom, and it raises the educational stakes.”

Students will be using the iPads to take notes in the classroom, to visit educational sites to gather information, and for testing preparation and homework, said technology director Joe Morano.
