Visit with Santa in Weston

Santa and Mrs. Claus will be at the Bell Tower in Weston Town Center (1675 Market St.) from 5-8 p.m. Dec. 3, 9-10, 16-17 and 23 for pictures and to read wish lists.

The center is also hosting the annual Christmas tree lighting from 6-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1. Santa and Mayor Eric Hersh will light the tree at 7 p.m. Festivities include live entertainment, free train rides, activities, food trucks and more.

Residents are asked to bring unwrapped toys to support the kids of the Russell Life Skills & Reading Foundation.

Teams forming for Weston Relay for Life

The American Cancer Society’s 2012 Relay For Life of Weston is forming teams for its 10th anniversary fundraiser.

This year's Relay For Life of Weston takes place April 14-15 at the Cypress Bay High School football field and stadium. Last year's event raised more than $210,000, making it the number one relay in Broward County for the second year in a row and number seven in the state.

Weston hotel hosting Thanksgiving spread for firefighters

The Hyatt Regency Bonaventure is getting in the holiday spirit by serving up Thanksgiving dinner for the Weston Fire Department.

The firefighters will be presented with a traditional feast courtesy of the hotel's executive chef and associates.

Thanksgiving closings in Weston

All city administrative offices (City Hall, the Community Center, the Public Works Services Center and the Building Department) will be closing at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 23 and will reopen on Monday, Nov. 28.

All city parks will close at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day only. There will be regularly scheduled garbage collection.

Weston program receives grant to expand

Weston was one of 53 organizations statewide to be awarded a $9,600 grant to expand its Community Emergency Response Team program. It will help it reach its goal of training an additional 40 members in this fiscal year.

The program, which works under the Broward Sheriff’s Office Department of Fire Rescue, educates participants on disaster preparedness and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations.

Weston store hosting grand opening event

A Nose For Clothes is hosting a grand opening celebration from 6-9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19 at 1734 Main St. in the Weston Town Center.

The event will feature an appearance from Miss Weston and music from Ariel Rose. Cheese and wine will be served, and there will be a raffle.

'Mr. Popper's Penguins' to be shown in Weston

Weston will present "Mr. Popper's Penguins" as part of its Moonlight Movies in the Park series at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10 at the Event Stage at Weston Regional Park, 20200 Saddle Club Road.


The life of a businessman begins to change after he inherits six penguins, and as he transforms his apartment into a winter wonderland, his professional side starts to unravel.

Help a Weston school win a technology grant

Imagine Charter School at Weston is in contention to win a technology grant in the Clorox Power A Bright Future Program.

In its third year, the program is awarding four $25,000 grants and a $50,000 grant to help fund programs in schools. The school is currently in third place in their category and sixth place in votes overall out of more than 1,600 participants.

Weston health club hosting events to help teen battling cancer

Midtown Athletic Club, 2300 Royal Palm Blvd. in Weston, is hosting several events to help Sydney Lister, who was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, and the nonprofit organization launched in the wake of her plight.

The club's Sunset" Spin-A-Thon sold out in less than two weeks and has, at last tally, raised more than $12,000. Next is the spa party set for 6-8 p.m. Nov. 18, available for a $20 or more donation. A round robin tennis tournament is set for 9 a.m., Dec. 3. Residents can sign up with a $30 or more donation.

Carole Wood, Midtown's director of special events, said their goal is to raise $20,000 before the end of December for SIDES (Sydney’s Incredible Defeat of Ewing’s Sarcoma), a local nonprofit that recently formed to help families like the Listers.

Spring soccer registration kicks off this month

Soccer registration for the AYSO Region 644 Spring 2012 soccer league begins online at www.ayso644.org on Tuesday, Nov. 15.

Players ages 4-19 are welcome. Cost is $140 and includes 10 games, a full uniform, trophies, insurance and more. All games and practices are at Weston Regional Park. Season runs from March through June.

Harvest Drive kicks off in Weston on Sunday

The kickoff for the annual Harvest Drive will take place during Community Fun Day, set for 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6 at the Weston Town Center, 1675 Market St.

Festivities include a DJ, bounce house and face painting.

Since 1992, the drive has provided needy Broward County families with a complete Thanksgiving meal and a week's worth of groceries, as well as personal and household necessities.

Students from more than 150 public and private schools, as well as churches, temples and neighborhoods, are holding drives to supply the Harvest Drive with the non-perishable food and toiletries that are distributed to the families. The goal this year is to feed 2,000 families in Broward. Residents are asked not to bring glass containers.

Video: Weston YMCA attempts to break largest Zumba class record

The Sheinberg Family YMCA of Weston looked to break the Guinness World Record with a 30-minute Zumba class.

With more than 1,348 participants braving the rain, they did break the record held by Brownsville, Texas. However, there was a group in Australia that beat that number two weeks prior with 1,401. Organizers did not find this out until after the event.

The attempt was part of the YMCA's Fiesta, a day of festivities staged in conjunction to Hispanic Heritage Month.
