The Weston Foreign Film Series continues with the French film "Copacabana" with showings at 5 and 7:15 p.m. Jan. 9 at the Weston 8 Cinema, 1338 SW 160th Ave. in Sunrise.

Tickets are $7 and can be purchased at the Weston Community Center, 20200 Saddle Club Road. The film will be shown with English subtitles.

Water meters in residential communities in the Indian Trace portions of Weston will be replaced, beginning with Country Isles, starting Tuesday, Jan. 3.

This replacement program, in conjunction with Sunrise, which supplies water to Weston, will be ongoing over the next two years. More than 7,700 meters will be replaced in the first year.

A modern version of "The Tortoise and the Hare" comes to life in a free puppet show set for 1:30 and 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7 at the Community Center in Weston Regional Park, 20200 Saddle Club Road.

The target age for the performances are prekindergarten through second grade. In addition to the moral that perseverance prevails, good nutrition and exercise are stressed.

"Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules" will be shown 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7 at the event stage in Weston Regional Park, 20200 Saddle Club Road.

The screening is free.

In celebration of Adam Daren's bar mitzvah, his family donated a menorah to Temple Dor Dorim in Weston.

The menorah will be officially dedicated today at Shabbat services by Rabbi Norman Lipson, with thanks and appreciation to the Daren Family.

The menorah, called "Rockets into Roses," is a hand-sculpted work of art fashioned by metal sculptor Yaron Bob, from actual rockets that landed in Israel. Each piece is a limited-edition collector's item.

Rabbi Yisroel Spalter and Weston officials will light the city's largest menorah during a Hanukkah celebration set for 5-8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 25 at Weston Town Center, 1675 Market St.

* City parks will close at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 24 and Sunday, Dec. 25.

* City administrative offices will be closed Monday, Dec. 26 in observance of Christmas Day and Monday, Jan. 2 in observance of New Year’s Day. The parks will be open, and there will be regularly scheduled garbage collection.

* Residential Christmas tree curbside collection begins Monday, Jan. 2. The last collection day will be on Saturday, Jan. 28. Residents are asked to place trees curbside and to not obstruct regular garbage cart collection. Be sure to remove all ornaments and lights as trees are recycled.

Members of the Hyatt Regency Bonaventure Conference Center and Spa team visited Eagle Point Elementary in Weston to work with nearly 200 second-graders and create gingerbread houses for a large-scale holiday display in the hotel’s lobby.

The decorated gingerbread houses will be incorporated into a large-scale gingerbread village that features a replica of the YMCA of Weston. The village will be on display throughout December, and residents are welcome to visit the hotel to enjoy the handmade holiday décor.

The Sunrise Utility Department, which provides water to Weston, will use chlorine in the drinking water system through Dec. 28.

The chlorination water treatment is a common practice for water suppliers. This periodic program is mandated by the Broward County Health Department. Individuals may notice a slight change in the taste, odor or color of the water during this time.

The Rotary Club of Weston, the city and the YMCA of Broward County hosted a pep rally at Indian Trace Elementary School, the winner of the 2010 Mayor’s Challenge Cup.

Mayor Eric Hersh and Ryan Smiley, director of the Sheinberg Family YMCA of Weston, spoke about the Get FIT program, as well as encouraging the children to have a repeat in this year's Mayor's Challenge Cup 1-mile walk/run on Sunday.

The winning school with the most participation will receive the trophy, $500 from the Rotary Club of Weston and tickets for a free meal at Carolina Ale House. Special guest and free agent Miami Heat forward James Jones pushed the importance of healthy eating, moderation and exercise to the students. The YMCA followed up with a fitness demonstration.

Last year the Y-Fit program was provided for free to 100 Country Isles Elementary students after school, three days a week with a healthy snack. Proceeds from this year’s Run for Tomorrow and Get FIT initiative hope to expand the program to three elementary schools and ultimately all elementary schools in Weston. Every elementary school in Weston will each be presented with soccer and football sports kits donated by Dick's Sporting Goods.

The Mayor's Challenge Cup walk/run, Run for Tomorrow and the Get FIT Fest will take place on Sunday, Dec. 11 at the Weston Town Center.

Registration is open for the Holiday Tennis Camp at Weston Tennis Center, 16451 Racquet Club Road.

Session one runs Dec. 19-23, and session two goes from Dec. 26-30. Full days are offered from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. or half days from 9 a.m.-noon.

Activities include workouts, drill sessions, latest tour techniques, team competitions, games and prizes. Campers should wear sun protective clothing and label all articles of clothing and rackets with their name. Residents much also bring their own tennis racket, sunscreen, tennis shoes, hat, water bottle, and lunch.

The Weston Community Center, 20200 Saddle Club Road, is offering classes for those ages 15-20 to prepare for the SATs starting Jan. 15.

The program will be offered on the following dates:
Sundays from 10:30 a.m.–1 p.m. (Jan. 15–March 4)
Sundays from 1:30–4 p.m. (Jan. 15–March 4)
Thursdays from 7:15–9:45 p.m. (Jan. 19–March 8)

Classes will be instructed by Jeff Steinberg, a former full-time adviser and instructor of college preparatory and study skills courses at Miami-Dade College. Content includes commonly overlooked strategies and techniques for doing well on the SAT.
