Weston Philharmonic Society presenting Valentine's Day Music Salon

Weston Philharmonic Society is hosting a Valentine's Day Music Salon from 3-5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12 at 2660 Hackney Road in Weston.

Cost is $30, which includes wine and refreshments. Tickets are available at Comerica Bank (2800 Weston Road, Suite 110) and Community Bank of Broward (1504 Weston Road).

Tickets available for "The Velveteen Rabbit" in Weston

The Professional Theater for Children will have a performance of the "The Velveteen Rabbit" at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11 at Cypress Bay High School, 18600 Vista Park Blvd.

School in Southwest Ranches blesses refurbished track

Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School blessed its newly refurbished track, as the Maverick track team took its first lap.

The original track was created 11 years ago when the Southwest Ranches school was built.

“The time frame to renovate the track was approximately three weeks,” said Anthony Massaro, McCarthy’s athletic director. “Our track is quite unique. There aren't many royal blue tracks, only a handful throughout the nation.


The track will host its Big Blue Invitational on March 3.

"Entre Nos" is the next in Weston Foreign Film Series

"Entre Nos" is the next movie in the Weston Foreign Film Series, with showings at 5 and 7:15 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13 at the Weston 8 Cinema, 1338 SW 160th Ave. in Sunrise.

Mariana’s children have grown up in Colombia without their father. After years of separation, the family is reunited in New York Then Antonio announces he has found work in Miami and will send for them. When Mariana does not hear from him, and with only $50 left, she must find a way for her to survive.

A Q&A session will follow the 5 p.m. showing with Antonio Fins of the Sun Sentinel.

CarFit coming to Weston

CarFit will take place 9 a.m.-1 p.m. March 1 at Bonaventure Town Center Club, 16690 Saddle Club Road.

CarFit is an educational program that offers older adults the opportunity to check how well their personal vehicles "fit" them. The CarFit program also provides information and materials on community-specific resources that could enhance their safety as drivers, and/or increase their mobility in the community.

Tennis tournament set in Weston

As the world’s top tennis players compete this week in the year’s first major championship, the Australian Open, hundreds of junior players will take center stage at the 10-and-under tournament Jan. 28 at Midtown Athletic Club, 2300 Royal Palm Blvd. in Weston.

It will be one of the state’s first competitions played on shorter courts with lower nets, lower-compression balls, smaller rackets and different scoring system.

County agency holding Recycle Revolution video contest for students

Attention high school and middle public school students.

Broward County Solid Waste and Recycling Services is hosting the "Recycle Revolution" video contest. Public school students are being asked to play a greater role in recycling in school by creating a video about “All-In-One” recycling for a chance for their school group to win a $500 gift card and have their video posted online.

Students will write, produce, direct, star and edit their own videos following established guidelines. Deadline to upload videos through their schools is Feb. 20.

The public will then be invited to vote for their favorites by “liking” them at facebook.com/BrowardCountyRecycling from March 5 to April 6. Winners will be announced on April 6 to kick off Broward County’s month-long celebration of Earth Day 2012.

Sobibor death camp survivor to speak in Weston

Philip Bialowitz, one of six living survivors of Sobibor, the infamous Nazi death camp in Poland, will speak at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24 at Chabad Lubavitch of Weston, 18501 Tequesta Trace Park Lane.

The New Yorker participated in the October 1943 prisoner revolt at Sobibor, which freed about half of the camp's 600 slave laborers. An estimated 250,000 Jews, including most of Bialowitz's family, were murdered at the camp. Following the uprising, the Nazis discontinued all killing operations at the camp. The revolt at Sobibor was the largest and most successful prisoner uprising of World War II.

Free puppet show hosted in Weston next month

Performances of the “Little Red Riding Hood” puppet show will take place at 1:30 and 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4 at the Weston Community Center inside Weston Regional Park, (20200 Saddle Club Road).

Puppets will come to life with an all-new twist on an all-time favorite. In this updated version, the Wolf and Red both learn some valuable lessons on the way to Grandma’s house.

Weston doctor elected to commission on cancer

Dr. Steven Wexner, chairman of the Department of Colorectal Surgery, chief academic officer and emeritus chief of staff at Cleveland Clinic Florida in Weston, has been elected to the Commission on Cancer as a representative of the American College of Surgeons.

He recently began his first renewable three-year term, during which he will work with other members to help improve survival and quality of life for cancer patients through standard setting, prevention, research, education and the monitoring of comprehensive quality care.

Still time for students to apply for scholarship

With five weeks left, the Broward League of Cities encourages students to apply for the annual Scholarship for Government Studies.

Offered to four Broward County public or charter high school seniors, the $1,000 scholarships provide financial support to students who plan to attend a college or university to pursue a major in public administration, political science or other government-related field.

Applicants must demonstrate strong communication and leadership skills. The application must include an essay, a personal statement, two letters of recommendation and a transcript.

Applications are due by Feb. 10. To be considered, applicants must be available on the date scheduled for interviews, tentatively set for March 31. For more information on the scholarship or the organization, visit www.BrowardLeague.org.

Weston-based nonprofit to be featured on NBC tonight

Emmy's Heart, a nonprofit founded by a Weston mother, will be featured on the NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4.

The charity was founded by Laura Pita, whose son Josh was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Emmy's Heart was named after Pita's late mother, who died of cancer. The organization aims to brighten the lives of children who are battling serious illnesses or disabilities in South Florida. They make and distribute tutus and crowns for the girls, as well as capes and masks for the boys.

Interfaith benefit concert planned in Weston

Temple Dor Dorim and St. Paul Lutheran Church are organizing an Interfaith concert to benefit the hungry at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 29 at the temple, 2360 Glades Circle in Weston.

The concert will feature performances from Temple Dor Dorim’s Generations Choir and Religious School children in partnership with St. Paul Lutheran Church Adult and Children’s Choir to raise money and collect food for local food pantries.

This event is open to the community. Non-perishable food items and monetary donations are welcome.

The Weston Branch Library, 4205 Bonaventure Blvd., is offering a six-week Introduction to Microsoft Excel class from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Monday from Jan. 9 to Feb. 20.

Learn to use the program to improve your bookkeeping at home, as well as create spreadsheets or invoices at work.
