Summer sports leagues and camps in Weston

The Sheinberg Family YMCA of Weston, 20201 Saddle Club Road, is offering several summer sports leagues and programs for ages 5-18.

Katina Taylor Spin-A-Thon and Cardio Camp for Kids set

Midtown Athletic Club in Weston will host the third annual Katina Taylor Spin-A-Thon and Cardio Camp for Kids from 6-8:30 p.m. Thursday, June 7 at 2300 Royal Palm Blvd.

Proceeds will benefit the Jason Taylor Foundation in its ongoing effort to support and create programs to improve health care, education and quality of life for South Florida’s children in need.

The two-hour spinning session begins at 6:30 p.m. and will include 50 available stationary, high-performance spin bikes.

The cardio camp starts at 6 p.m. and is open to ages 6-15. They’ll rotate through four stations,including basketball drills, fitness drills, Cardio Tennis and Zumba. An after-spin party will cap the evening’s events and will feature prizes, games and autograph signings. Registration is required and the cost to participate is $99 per spin bike and $15 per child for cardio camp.

Southwest Ranches student collecting books for Uganda

Gabrielle Beecher, a junior at Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School in Southwest Ranches, has organized a book drive for children in Uganda.

The effort that started in March has brought in 4,500 donated books thus far to help the Invisible Children organization. She hopes to bring that number to 10,000 by September. Residents can make a donation by dropping off books they no longer read to the front office of the school, 5451 S. Flamingo Road.

Registration under way for Youth Police Services Academy

The Broward Sheriff's Office offers the Youth Police Services Academy summer program for ages 11-17 in Weston.

The free program gives participants the chance to explore law enforcement services with a hands-on experience. Topics include defense tactics, crime scene investigations, Internet safety, as well as tours of marine units and the courthouse. Youngsters will meet once a week for eight weeks, June 18-Aug. 6.

Ever think about running for office in Weston?

Those interested can contact the City Clerk Patricia Bates at Weston City Hall, 17200 Royal Palm Blvd. Call 954-385-2000.

To qualify to run for election for a commission seat, a person must be a resident of the area that he/she is running for and have resided continuously within that area for at least one year preceding the date of filing.

Candidate qualifying begins at noon on Monday, June 4 and ends at noon on June 8.

Weston students among winners of C-SPAN documentary competition

More than 1,200 participated in C-SPAN' s StudentCam documentary competition that encourages students to create a short film about issues affecting their communities and nation.

Among this year's winners were Chad Klitzman and Dustin Slade of Cypress Bay High in Weston. They took home second prize overall for "Signed, Sealed and Delivered."

Falcon Cove Middle's Cole Winton, Zach Aponte, Armando Martinez, Justin Iannacone, Daniel Hsu, Lacey Larson, Jordanne Cantrill, Kendra Blandom, Maria Riilo, Gabrielle Ferguson, Blair Yant, Joshua Prem and David Gilefor took home honorable mentions.

This year’s theme asked middle and high school students to focus on any section of the preamble, articles or amendments of the U.S. Constitution. For more information, visit http://www.studentcam.org/.

Weston cancer survivor to be honored at gala

The Broward Unit of the American Cancer Society will have its 8th Annual Gala, the 2012 Birthday Ball at 7 p.m. May 12 at the Gulfstream Park’s Sport of Kings Theater in Hallandale Beach.

This year’s recipient of the Lainie Schultz Survivor of the Year Award is Weston resident Ross Sabath. The cancer survivor has chaired the Relay For Life of Weston the last two years. In 2011, the Weston Relay was the number one event in Broward and seventh in Florida.

Weston student chosen for scholarship

The Broward League of Cities announced it has selected four high school seniors to receive its annual Scholarship for Government Studies.

Among them is Cypress Bay High student Chad Klitzman, of Weston. He will be joined by Feyaad Allie of Coral Springs High, Parkland resident Joshua Feinzig of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High and Cooper City High's Spencer Shweky.

The $1,000 scholarships provides financial support every year to a quartet of Broward County seniors enrolled in a public or charter school and planning to pursue a major in public administration, political science or other government-related field.

Waste and electronics collection event set in Weston

Residents can drop off their household hazardous waste and electronics items at the Weston Public Works Services Center, 2599 S. Post Road, from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, May 20.

This refers to used or leftover contents of consumer products that contain chemicals with one of the four characteristics: toxic, ignitable, corrosive or reactive as defined by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Acceptable items include used motor oil, automotive batteries, computers, televisions and more. For more information, call 954-385-2600.

BSO Fire Rescue launches smoke alarm and battery replacement program in Weston

Broward Sheriff's Office Fire Rescue has launched their smoke alarm and battery replacement program for Weston residents.

The program is designed to reach resident seniors or the disabled who are unable to safely install smoke alarms and/or replace the batteries in an existing alarm.

In addition, firefighters will identify any risk factors present in the residence and share appropriate fire and life safety education information, including slip and fall prevention, water safety, hurricane preparedness, fire safety tips and others.

Call Fire Station 81 at 954-389-2015 to schedule an installation and/or battery replacement. This service is free.

Tennis tournament brings in more than $1,500 for KID

Weston resident Sherri Pfefer, co-chair for Kids in Distress' "Double The Fun" Tennis Tournament, presents framed artwork to Reza Tompsett, tennis director at the Weston Tennis Center.

The Weston Tennis Center hosted the charity tournament, raising more than $1,500 for the organization. The artwork was created by a child who received services through Kids in Distress.
