Open house scheduled for road project in Weston

A project open house is set for noon-2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4 in the City Commission Chambers in Weston City Hall, 17200 Royal Palm Blvd. It will provide an overview of the proposed improvements to the intersection of Lakeview Drive and Saddle Club Road.

Plans are to convert this intersection from the current four-way stop to a roundabout. Weston was awarded a grant from the Florida Department of Transportation for construction of the roundabout.

Art exhibits on display at Weston library

The Weston Branch Library, 4205 Bonaventure Blvd., is featuring two exhibits through Oct. 31.

Country Isles Elementary School has framed art from students on display in the Youth Services area. The library hopes to spotlight the works of budding artists at other schools in the future. In addition, the Multi-Purpose Room is the site of the"Nature and Manifest" exhibit with the work of Rafik Neme.

Southwest Ranches school opens iLounge

Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School has become fully immersed in Apple technology.

Most recently, the Southwest Ranches school opened up the iLounge (formerly known as the library and media center). The facility is modeled after a university setting where students sit on couches, rugs or chairs.

Students can also check out e-books, free for 30 days, as well as work on projects on their iPad. It's the latest addition to the school, which has already installed Apple TVs in every classroom. In addition, McCarthy High also revamped its website at http://www.mccarthyhigh.org.

595 Express service from Weston Road to start next month

Broward County Transit and the Florida Department of Transportation will launch a new 595 Express bus service from Weston Road to Miami starting Monday, Oct. 1. The stop will be at the Westgate Square at State Road 84 and Weston Road and take commuters to the Miami Civic Center area near Jackson Memorial Hospital.. Complimentary rides will be offered during the first week of service.

Weston 55+ Club for seniors looking to socialize

Weston’s 55+ Club provides programming at the Weston Community Center, 20200 Saddle Club Road.

Activities include lectures, luncheon outings, movie afternoons, board game days and other events. The events calendar, along with all information on RSVPs and maximum number of tickets available for each special event, are posted on the city’s website each month.

Stroller Strides classes offered in Weston

Stroller Strides classes are offered Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:15-10:15 a.m. for those with children ages 6 weeks to 4 years old at the Weston Community Center, 20200 Saddle Club Rd.

The program features a total body workout designed specifically for moms with stroller-age children. The classes combine power walking, running and intervals of body toning using exercise tubing, fitness balls, the environment and the stroller.

Broward League of Cities accepting application for student ambassador program

The Broward League of Cities is accepting applications for its student ambassador program from high school juniors who have a calling for public service or plan to pursue a career in public administration, political science or other government-related field.

In order to qualify, students must be Broward residents and attend a county public or charter school. During a two-year term, ambassadors meet with elected officials, learn about municipal government and attend the league's general membership meetings and other events.

Moonlight Movies in the Park returns next month

Weston's Moonlight Movies in the Park series returns at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13 with "Dolphin Tale" at the event stage inside Weston Regional Park, 20200 Saddle Club Road.

The family-friendly showings are free. Residents can bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating. Full-length feature films are projected onto a giant inflatable screen.



An amazing true story of Winter, a young dolphin who loses her tail, and Sawyer, and 11-year-old who befriends her, convincing locals to build her a prosthetic replacement.

Weston resident in the running for Winterfest honor

Voting is under way for Jr. Captain of the Winterfest Boat Parade through Sept. 14.

Among the 10 nominees up for the position is Sydney Lister, a Weston resident who was diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma during her sophomore year at St. Thomas Aquinas High. Inspired to help Lister and others battling the rare form of bone cancer, Paul Panagos launched Sydney's Incredible Defeat of Ewing's Sarcoma (SIDES), which has raised more than $100,000.

AARP safe driving course for mature adults

Weston is offering AARP’s 55 Alive/Mature Driving Program from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15 at the Weston Community Center, 20200 Saddle Club Road.

The course is available to anyone 50 and older. Registration is required. To register, call Sonny at 954-385-9920.

Cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for nonmembers. Participants are asked to bring a bagged lunch, and members should bring an AARP card.

Broward League of Cities issues Million Hour Volunteer Challenge

Broward League of Cities President and Fort Lauderdale City Commissioner Bobby Dubose has issued the Million Hour Volunteer Challenge in an effort to increase community service throughout Broward County.

DuBose is encouraging Broward residents to complete 1 million volunteer service hours by May 31. To participate in the challenge, residents can log service hours online at browardleague.org/volunteerchallenge.

The page features a barometer to show the county's progress and how many hours are needed to reach the goal. Residents can participate in any volunteer project of their choice.

Weston hotel and spa under new management

The Hyatt Regency Bonaventure is now the Bonaventure Resort & Spa.

The name change comes after Benchmark Hospitality International took over management with the purchase of the facilities by Hospitality Investing Group LLC, which plans a multimillion dollar renovation of the resort.

Buildbots classes open for fall in Weston

The magic of LEGO Robotics are explored through the Buildbots program, which combines creativity, design, logic, teamwork, scalability and problem-solving skills.

Fall classes are offered from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and 5:30-7:30 p.m. Fridays through December for children ages 7-14 at the Weston Community Center, 20200 Saddle Club Road. The class provides a step-by-step progression from beginner to advanced levels, accommodating individual abilities.

Lane closures affecting nighttime commute

Those traveling after hours should be aware of the following road advisories:

The on ramp from eastbound I-75 to eastbound I-595 will be closed nightly from 10 p.m.-5 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4 through Thursday, Sept. 6. Motorists will be detoured on northbound Sawgrass Expressway via Exit 1 (Sunrise Boulevard) to 136th Avenue.

The on ramp from eastbound State Road 84 to eastbound I-595 at Weston Road will be closed from 10 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6 to 5 a.m. Friday, Sept. 7. One lane of eastbound SR 84 between 133rd and 130th Avenue will be closed nightly from 9:30 p.m.-midnight, and two lanes will be closed nightly from midnight to 5 a.m. daily through Friday, Sept. 7. Motorists will be detoured to the eastbound I-595 on/off ramps.

One lane of westbound I-595 at Flamingo Road will be closed nightly from 9-11:30 p.m., and two lanes will be closed nightly from 11:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 6. Flamingo Road, in both directions, at the I-595 overpass will be closed from 10 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6 to 5 a.m. Friday, Sept. 7.

Southbound Flamingo Road at the I-595 overpass will be closed from 10 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4 to 5 a.m. Wednesday Sept. 5. The designated U-turns for both directions of SR 84 at Hiatus Road will be closed through Friday, Sept. 28. Motorists will still be able to make the U-turn movements through the signalized intersection.

One lane of westbound SR 84 between Hiatus and Flamingo roads will be closed from 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4 to 5 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5. One lane of eastbound SR 84 between Nob Hill and Pine Island roads will be closed from 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4 to 5 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5.

One lane of eastbound SR 84 at Pine Island Road will be closed nightly from 9:30 p.m.-5 a.m. beginning Wednesday, Sept. 5 and ending Friday, Sept. 7.One lane of Pine Island Road, in both directions, at the I-595 overpass will be closed nightly from 9:30 p.m.-5 a.m. beginning Tuesday, Sept 4 and ending Friday, Sept. 7.
