Halloween Spooktacular set in Weston

Get Fit Weston returns

Get Fit Weston is back for the third year with the Rotary Club of Weston continuing a community-wide initiative.

The program is built on a health and fitness theme in conjunction with and leading up to the club’s annual holiday season Run for Tomorrow 5K and Half Marathon races in December.

The Weston YMCA Family Center and area fitness centers and health partners are offering residents access to training programs, classes, health evaluations, screenings, testing and online education designed to help participants adopt healthier lifestyles and become more physically fit. Cost is $25 and gives access to 35 weekly fitness classes at seven different fitness partners until Dec. 8.

Weston hospital hosting Mobile Learning Lab

Cleveland Clinic Florida, 2950 Cleveland Clinic Blvd. in Weston, will host the Cigna Mobile Learning Lab to educate residents about lifestyle changes that can make a big difference in their overall health and well-being.

The free event takes place from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25. The lab offers a series of interactive tools to experience new ways to learn about nutrition, exercise, stress, prevention and barriers to good health.

Health and wellness screenings, free chair massages and nutrition tips will be provided, as well as personalized tips.

Weston high school graduates win scholarships

Two girls who graduated from Cypress Bay High School in Weston were awarded scholarships from Kohl's for $1,400 each.

Lauren Cohen and Jen Vogelsang, from the class of 2009, were invited to a scholarship dinner in Tallahassee, not far from where the business majors attend Florida State University.

They were among the five scholarships awarded. The two have been friends since ninth grade and roomed together for a year at FSU.

'Alvin and the Chipmunks' to be shown in Weston

"Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked" is the next film in Weston's free Moonlight Movies in the Park series. It's set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3 at the event stage outside the Weston Community Center, 20200 Saddle Club Road.



Dave Seville, the Chipmunks and the Chipettes are taking a luxury cruise to the International Music Awards. Alvin cannot resist the urge to create havoc, and the singing rodents soon find themselves marooned on a seemingly deserted island.

Octoberfest charity event set in Weston

The Weston Business Council's Octoberfest tastings will take place from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24 at the Weston Town Center, 1675 Market St.

Registration will be at the JG McGuiness patio with an after party also taking place there with a live band. Coast is $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Proceeds will benefit Women in Distress.

Southwest Ranches school performing 'The Spooktacular Adventure of Boo the Ghost!'

Combining the spirit of Halloween with the message of anti-bullying, Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High's Maverick Players will present the "Spooktacular Adventure of Boo the Ghost" at the Maverick Theater, 5451 S. Flamingo Drive in Southwest Ranches.

Performances will take place from 6-8 p.m. on Oct. 26, 29, 30 and 5-8 p.m. on Oct. 27. The shows will be followed by a trick-or-treat and character meet-and-greet. Children are invited to come in costume. Tickets are $5 and will be available at the door.

Longtime Weston mayor and commissioner to be honored Monday

Mayor Eric Hersh and Commissioner Mercedes Henriksson will be honored for their service to the community during a Term of Office Ceremony at the Monday, Oct. 15 City Commission meeting on Monday, Oct. 15.

It will be the final meeting they will preside over, yet they will remain in office until after the election and the new members are sworn in on Nov. 19. Hersh is the longest-serving member. He was elected to the first City Commission from September 1996-March 2001.

Hersh ran successfully for mayor in 2001 and has held that position ever since. His term of office now comes to a close due to term limits.

The market provides fresh, locally grown produce and other items for purchase. More than 30 local producers and farmers bring fruits, vegetables, herbs, breads, juices, flowers, soy products and more.

A Youth Chess Club is looking for more members to play from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Mondays at the Weston Community Center inside Weston Regional Park, 20200 Saddle Club Road.

The club is broken down into sessions of guided instruction and play. Focus is on fundamentals, tactics, psychology of play and other aspects of the game. Cost is $15 per session or $45 for four sessions.

Halloween Safety Expo set in Weston

Weston's annual Halloween Safety Expo is set for 6-8:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26 at Tequesta Trace Park, 600 Indian Trace.

Weston and the Broward Sheriff’s Office partner up for the event to provide children with a safe alternative to neighborhood trick-or-treating. Festivities include a costume contest, a "Picture Patch" photo opportunity, informational booths with candy, food, music and more. The BSO will also have fire trucks, a helicopter, rescue trucks and other vehicles on hand, as well as offering K-9 demonstrations.

Free pops concert set in Weston

The Symphony of the Americas, under the baton of Maestro James Brooks-Bruzzese, will present a free pops concert from 5-6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17 behind the Bell Tower at Weston Town Center, 1675 Market St.

Weston, the Weston Town Center and the Arts Council of Greater Weston, in collaboration with the Weston Philharmonic Society, will present the collection of Broadway and Hollywood tunes. Limited seating will be available, but residents can bring their own chair.

Weston athletic club undergoes $10 million renovation

Midtown Athletic Club in Weston recently completed a five-year, $10 million renovation project.

Additions include a new front entrance, expanded childcare facilities, family locker rooms and a 170-seat M Café. The café provides indoor seating, as well as an outdoor seating section overlooking the club’s two swimming pools and 24 clay-surface tennis courts. Members will also have access to two new private meeting rooms designed for professional and personal events.

The club is hosting a grand opening celebration with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and cocktail party at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12 with music from Latin Grammy winner Nestor Torres. Residents can visit the during the open house event from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 13 and 14. Guests can also participate in free fitness classes.
