Recycle your Christmas tree starting Dec. 26

treerecycle.jpg

Christmas tree collection in Weston will be Dec. 26-Jan. 5 for homes.

Residents' trees will be picked up during regular trash collection days beginning Dec. 26. Trees over 6 feet tall will be picked up on Saturday, Jan. 5, as they do not fit in the regular truck. The trees are taken to the trash distribution center.

A green alternative is taking advantage of the Broward County Parks Chip-A-Tree program. Last year, Broward County Parks recycled more than 9,000 trees as part of the program.

The free program encourages residents to remove all decorations from their holiday trees (no decorated trees will be accepted), then bring the tree to a participating park, where they are chipped and used for landscaping throughout the county park system. There is a limit of two trees per vehicle, artificial trees are not accepted, and no commercial vehicles or garbage trucks are allowed.

This season's program runs from Wednesday, Dec. 26-Monday, Jan. 21. For a list of locations, visit http://www.broward.org/PARKS/THINGSTODO/Pages/Chip-a-TreeProgram.aspx
