Deadline approaching for scholarship opportunity

The Broward League of Cities is offering scholarships to Broward County high school seniors who are county residents, attend a Broward public or charter school and plan to attend a college or university to pursue a major in public administration, political science or other government-related field.

Four students will be selected for a $1,000 scholarship. Applications are due by Feb. 15. To be considered, applicants must be available on the date scheduled for interviews, set for March 30.

Weston school wins $25,000 grant contest for new playground

Country Isles Elementary School in Weston is a winner in the Clorox “Power a Bright Future” Grant contest of $25,000 toward a new playground.

Voting took place between Nov. 12 and Dec. 19 through text and online. The school will begin to plan for the new playground this year with the hopes of it being in place for next school year.

Helicopters take off at Weston event

The Broward Sheriff's Office and the city of Weston hosted a Winter Safety Expo featuring police and fire department vehicles. A variety of other organizations and agencies were also represented.

Among them was a BSO rescue chopper that took off on the field of Tequesta Trace Park.

Weston middle schooler takes first place in science fair

Annamarie Malter, an eighth-grader at Tequesta Trace Middle School, placed first in the school’s annual science fair. Her analysis on the benefits of music during test taking was seen as "very comprehensive."

Malter took first place out of more than 400 eighth-grade students. Her next stop is the Broward County competition.

Weston Foreign Film Series continues next month

The Weston Foreign Film Series continues with "The Schwartz Dynasty," showing at 5 . and 7:15 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11 at the Weston 8 Cinema, 1338 SW 160th Ave. in Sunrise.

In this dramatic satire, a widow and a Russian immigrant fight bureaucracy to get their loved one buried. Peppering their poignant story with irony are an Orthodox Jew pothead, a fumbling politician, a surgeon-turned-butcher and other eccentric characters.

Weston to show 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days'

Weston's next installment in the Moonlight Movies in the Park series is "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days," set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9 at the event stage of Weston Community Center, 20200 Saddle Club Road.

Residents can bring lawn chairs and blankets.

BSO hosting two events Feb. 9 in Weston

The Broward Sheriff’s Office is hosting the Shred-a-thon and Operation Medicine Cabinet from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Feb. 9 at the Weston District Office, 17300 Royal Palm Blvd.

Residents will be able to shred away identity theft by safely disposing of their personal documents, check stubs, credit card offers, receipts and any other material that might contain sensitive data. This service is free of charge. There is a five-box maximum for shredding documents.

At the same time, Operation Medicine Cabinet will collect any unused, unwanted or expired medications for safe disposal. Come early and receive a $5 gift card while supplies last.

Southwest Ranches 'Walk for Life" draws hundreds

The 12th Annual "Walk for Life," sponsored by the Respect Life Club at Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School in Southwest Ranches, had an estimated 200 participants.

The fundraiser was hosted to raise awareness for the Archdiocese of Miami’s Hollywood Respect Life Office. The Respect Life office is staffed by volunteers who help women in crisis pregnancies. The event raised more than $3,000.

Weston hospital has expanded its emergency room

Cleveland Clinic Florida in Weston recently hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony and celebration to commemorate the expansion of the hospital’s emergency room.

This includes an additional 3,500 square feet of space and six ER beds, including an official “safe room” to accommodate behavioral health patients.

Winter Safety Expo set in Weston

Weston and the Broward Sheriff’s Office are hosting a Winter Safety Expo, set for 6-8:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25 at Tequesta Trace Park, 600 Indian Trace.

Police and fire department vehicles will be on hand, along with helicopters. Festivities will include entertainment, DJ music, snow cones, a photo area, informational booths and more.

Royal Palm Boulevard repaving work to start Jan. 28

The first phase of a roadway repaving project will begin on Monday, Jan. 28 with the resurfacing of Royal Palm Boulevard from Saddle Club to Weston roads. The resurfacing will be done block-by-block.

The first section under construction will be from Saddle Club to Island Way. This phase will take two weeks to complete. Construction will generally take place during non-rush hour times, 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Portions of one travel lane in each direction may be closed at any given time. There will not be a total roadway closure.

Water meter replacement program continue

Weston's water meter replacement program will continue this week in Highland Meadows, followed by San Messina and Camden Meadows.

Water meters in residential communities were replaced, with the city working in conjunction with Sunrise, which supplies water to Weston. More than 7,700 meters were estimated to be replaced last year.

Car show in Weston this weekend

Eagle Point's playground will be closed Jan. 14 and 15, and Gator Run's playground will be closed Jan. 16 and 17.

New class in Weston for children who love science

Registration is under way for the "I Know Science" class at the Weston Community Center, 20200 Saddle Club Road.

The hands-on program is open to children from kindergarten through fifth grade starting Jan. 23 through March 20 on Wednesdays. Completed experiments will be sent home weekly.
