Early registration for YMCA spring basketball in Weston for children age 4-16 is under way and runs through Feb. 26. Cost is $105 for members and $155 for nonmembers. Cost for regular registration is $125 for members and $175 for nonmembers from Feb. 27-March 11. For registration or league information, visit www.ymcabroward.org. The Sixth Annual Student Artist Showcase opens today and will be on display through Feb. 28 at the Weston Branch Library, (4205 Bonaventure Blvd. The exhibit, sponsored by the Arts Council of Greater Weston, will feature 200 student works of art, from drawings and paintings to jewelry design and art from recycled materials.

Middle School Night with the Florida Panthers, staged with the YMCA of Weston, is set for 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13 at Weston Regional Park, 20200 Saddle Club Road. The Panthers' Tomas Fleischmann and Krystofer Barch will be on hand for pictures and autographs. They will be joined by color commentator Bill Lindsay and The Red Line Panther Girls cheerleaders. Festivities include the opportunity to test their skills on the inflatable street hockey rink, a slap shot event and more. Throughout the evening, 100 tickets will be given out. The event is held in conjunction with the South Florida In-Line Hockey League.

The city of Weston and the Weston Philharmonic Society present “Broadway Goes to the Movies" at 8 p.m. March 17 at the Cypress Bay High School auditorium, 18600 Vista Park Blvd. The orchestral journey will feature beloved music of the stage and screen. Clips from such favorites as "Chicago," "Wicked," "Evita," "Star Wars," "Grease" and "Harry Potter" will be accompanied by the sounds of the Symphony of the Americas Orchestra. Advance tickets are $20, $10 for age 18 and younger, and are available at the Weston Community Center in Weston Regional Park (20201 Saddle Club Road), Community Bank of Broward (1504 Weston Road) and Comerica Bank (2800 Weston Road). The city is in the early stages of forming a Weston Bike Alliance, which will consist of members who have an interest in promoting the use of the bicycle for transportation and recreation. Members will work with a city liaison on how to accomplish this. They hope to improve the experience of riding bikes throughout the city. They're hoping to have their first meeting in April.

(Submitted photo) Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School blessed its newly refurbished track, as the Maverick track team took its first lap. The original track was created 11 years ago when the Southwest Ranches school was built.

“The time frame to renovate the track was approximately three weeks,” said Anthony Massaro, McCarthy’s athletic director. “Our track is quite unique. There aren't many royal blue tracks, only a handful throughout the nation.

The track will host its Big Blue Invitational on March 3.
