It's been sad listen to Artie commit suicide on the air. He's an addict and his trip to drug-heaven Amsterdam is likely what set off his latest manic episode. Howard and crew have been enabling Artie for years. They like his outbursts, his out of control eating, and even seem to tolerate his alcohol and drug abuse. The guy is a mess. He needs professional help, drug rehab, alcohol rehab, and he needs to drop about 120 lbs before his body just stops functioning. If he continues on his current path, he likely has less than 6 months to live. His "friends" need to intervene and get him cleaned up. Otherwise, they'll be blaming themselves when he's gone. He's a smart guy and a very funny comic. But he's messed up. He needs to fix himself first and the crew on that show should do anything possible to get that started.

If Arte had a mustache, none of this ever would have happened.

Artie you need to get your life together. Being on this show is the only reason your still alive. It gives you a reason to wake up every morning. Artie has progressed from a mediocre comedian to a pardoy of himself. He is NOT an everyday Joe. He is a low-rent, classless, talentless, boring, obese waste of time and money. His movies are embarrassingly bad. I'm not going to say I never laugh at him - I do! But there are so many people who could fill his seat WITHOUT the gay bashing, incorrect grammar, and repetitive stories.

yesterday when artie was sleeping was the funniest stuff ive ever heard. Like Gary told the f@get writer on the wrapup show Artie is a grown man and capable of making his own decisions. Plus it was a funny contribution by Artie, he always makes excellent contributions. he will be back. the show will be less funny if he's not there.

Artie has been on the road to self destruction for quite a while now. After his almost physical confrontation of Sal, his verbal assault on Mike and now this rage filled tirade of Teddy, it is more than obvious that he is sabotaging his career and his life in general. He needs some serious down time.

Such a sad, sad day. Artie's got some issues he needs to deal with, and unfortunately, until then he's just like a grenade ready to explode. I hope he gets the help he needs, and quickly. He's a HUGE asset to the show, and I'd hate to see him leave. F Jackie - he was NOT nearly as funny as Artie. The fans have already spoken of their fondness of Artie. artie doesnt do drugs anymore. granted people take it like a grain of salt but how many times he has to explain himself but he says he doesnt. what else could he do to make people believe him. his immune system is messed up according to a doctor, hes over worked (late night gigs during the week and weekends abroad) and he's overweight, thats why he misses work sometimes not bec he supposedly does drugs.

Howards ego caused this breakdown!!

You heard it here first - Howard has been in therapy for so long he thinks he is a therapist. Teddy tried to leave the studio 6 times but Howie made him stay. Even Robin told him to let it go. Ego maniac Howard thinks he can cure anyone! He wanted to be the hero that made Teddy and Artie all better. A man of lesser ego would have let this go!

Also - Howard tried to enrage Artie even more by calling him Bro when he came back into the studio. And Howard tries to play the "how would I know card". F you Howard. The days Artie is out that show sucks.

I think Artie is funny, a much better co-host than Jackie, a good caring person, great for the Stern show, and all the other good things you can say. Unfortunately, like some of our other great comedians whose lives ended too soon, Game Over . He clearly knows what his problems are and how to fix them. He has tried re-hab before and it hasn't worked. In Artie's mind, he is so messed up and so far down the rabbit hole, there's no escape. He has lost all hope. When people lose all hope, there's no reason to live (in their mind).

Howard is the ONLY person that Artie respects highly enough to stop and listen to (1-on1, privately, off the air). Howard is probably the only person who can actually help save Artie at this point and intervene. If Howard doesn't somehow stop Artie from getting on that plane to Amsterdam, Artie will come back lying down. I know that's a huge burden/responsibility for Howard. Howard certainly didn't ask for it and it's a $h!tty deal, but task is his nonetheless.

Artie: If by some chance you read this, there is ALWAYS hope. Even if you can't see it yourself, it doesn't mean it isn't there.

What made you come to this news item and what is making you interact if you don't listen? Whether it's staged or reality or a combination of both, we find it entertaining. Satellite radio is growing exponentially and is the future of radio, so attempting to call Howard "prehistoric" is just silly.

it's all a buncha crap, none of it's real, fat artie and teddy will be @ the airport later today leaving for amsterdam, acting like nothing's wrong, cuz there IS NOTHING WRONG. it was just a ploy to get out of the studio early for the trip, trust me. it's all an act... they plan this stuff out to draw people in.. do you think it's a coincidence that this happened on the day before a week long vacation??? they call it a cliff-hanger.

After listening to the play back it is obvious, in my opinion, that Howard caused this. He just couldn't let it go. Teddy wanted to leave the studio and said so numerous times but Howard would not let him leave. Howard just kept it going and going when he should have sensed that this could go wrong in a big way. Howard should learn a lesson from this. There are consequences when a person, especially a powder keg like Artie, is pushed too far. If Artie had of had a gun there would have been some dead people, including himself. Artie needs help quick! Also, I don't believe this was staged, that was real rage coming from Artie.
The greatest actor could not have faked that.

Artie has a full menu of problems so it not hard to imagine him going ballistic. He is frustrated about his life and doesn't need aggravation from Teddy. If it wasn't today's action it would have been something else. Artie is a time bomb but still is a lovable guy. He has a lot of great qualities. He just needs a bit of help to break those destructive patterns before it is too late..

I really hope subsequent media attention does not drag Artie further down the spiral he's on. In a way I hope he does go to Amsterdam so he's not exposed to the tabloid tv and print articles which will convince him even further he's a "bad person."

I've listened for 15+ years and can say that NOTHING they do like that is FAKE or STAGED. Of course they do bits! But when they are discussing items like this, it's not a BIT and it's obvious when they are doing BITS.

I doubt that fight was staged. The emotion and anger was too real. Take note of Stern reprimanding Robin (in a serious manner) afterwards. That rarely happens.

To all those morons out there saying this is fake get your heads out of your rears. What has always made Stern unique is that it brutally real. Day in and day out you see their real lives, worries, problems and emotions. Nothing is censored. There are going to be eruptions like this just like in real life. There is nothing "celebrity" about anyone on the show, you see how real people react to real and stressful situation. You dont see that ANYWHERE else out there. Everyone on the show's problems and daily lives are all out there for us to see.

Second most importantly Sirius is a paid subscription service, they dont need to coerce you to listen again when they get back from vacation they already got you! The only people that heard this are those who already pay and listen. That fact makes the accusation completely illogical. They get new listeners mostly by word of mouth, if they pulled scripted bullshit it would work against them not for them. Your making assumptions based on terrestrial radio and broadcast tv, your lack of understanding of this shows your intelligence level.

And lastly, this will all be on Howard TV, unedited and uncensored. Then we can all see how it REALLY went down. Name for me anywhere else where you can find that kind of in your face reality and honesty. No one else puts it out there like that.

I also agree that it is a bit fishy that Artie got into a fight with Sal the day before their last week off but this seems like the real deal. they are playing 4/7 show on H 100... i guess to replay... they are playing the news... and they did play the fight on 101... cause a west coast listener called in to the wrap up show and told us...

I purchase satellite for this reason and if they do not replay the show then I'm going to cancel. The whole fiasco was due to Howard and being pompous. The show will never be the same if Artie departs. No one could take his place, and have the same result. Howard should go after Artie like he did with robin in the old days. He needs to be a stand up guy!!

Who do you think made the call to not air a replay? Howard or Sirius? I wonder if it is for legal reasons. Any other reason is a slap in the face to us subscribers. I am bummed because I hate artie and have waited for this day for a long time.

I think Artie was looking for an excuse not to go to Amsterdam. He knows he wouldn't be able to handle the pressure of the freedom to be able to use drugs legally over there and fears that he will slip back into using heroin again (if he isn't already using!). He's probably had pressure (off air) from his family about going, as they probably fear the same thing and therefore misdirected his anger about the situation by taking it out on Teddy today. Now as usual (common with most addicts) Artie uses 'smoke screens' to hide and avoid the true problems....he's a depressed adict who never got over the death of his father and needs serious help.

Sad but true, Artie needs timeoff from the show (6 months - 1 year) which is something that should have happened long before it reached this point. The only problem is how do you now bring him back without people saying there's a double standard, knowing perfectly well that if Sal or Benjy did less than what Artie has done they would be off the show immediately? Hmmmm

I really feel bad for Artie. He has been spiraling out of control for so long now. I would be surprised if he's not using. His behavior is just too crazy, from falling asleep during the show to his violent outbursts (both of which make for good airplay though). I missed how the argument began with Teddy. I understand they were having a disagreement in the hall and Howard brought them into the studio. I'm really bummed they aren't doing a replay, but I understand that there may be legal reasons for pulling it from the air.

I saw Artie in Philly on new years eve and he was a wreck! He got wasted and almost fell off the stage while signing autographs at the end of the show. Hopefully someone can help him before it's too late!

They arent replaying this mornings show. Instead they are playing Mondays show.

Hearing Robin's reaction it is clear: 1-this was real, and 2-she had to put on the brakes in suggesting Howard made a mistake when he told her to quiet/calm down or whatever it was. He can deflect like no other, and in his position, no one - including Robin can call him on it.

I love the show, and he is the best. It doesn't happen often, but when he has to talk himself out of a corner, it is in my opinion easy to see. He did it today.

Artie, you should have clocked Teddy. For Teddy to Think he deserves a percentage of your salary, he is far from reality. As for Stern, he is the biggest Instigator, always stoking the fire. You should have left him a long time ago. You make the show, as everyone knows, except those who are up Sterns butt. Even Robin thought Stern was out of line. He stoked you on your weight and drug use. If he was such a "BRO" he would have put you ahead of his show, and cared more about his "BRO" than ratings.

Artie is a comic and they are dark people by nature. having been int he comedy business for only 3 years I am amazed that some fo the funniest people are also some of the most unbalanced. That said Artie also has a big heart. You can tell that if you're a regular listener.

I dont see how ratings could be a factor at all....they really dont give much of a crap about that since they left FM radio. If you own a Sirius radio, thats all they care about anymore.

As far as Artie goes, I dont think this was scripted. If you listen daily, you can see how his life is spiraling out of control. The constant sick days...falling asleep during the show.....300 freakin pounds!!! The dude has major problems and it was going to come to something like this eventually.

This whole thing with Artie and Teddy is ridiculous. Teddy only talks to Artie that way because Artie lets him. Artie was being an ass to Teddy telling people how much Teddy made last year... Granted, Teddy said he was going to do the same thing, but he didn't do it... Artie says "Don't push me, or I am going to admit your salary" and then in the next breath, admits what Teddy made. Then Artie lends Teddy money knowing that he will never pay Artie back... That is Artie's fault. And when Artie sits there and attacks Teddy because he was just hurt by Artie telling him that he is a loser and that anyone can do the assistant job is just crazy. Teddy was basically stating that anyone else would have quit within a week, and next thing you know: Artie is jumping over people trying to hurt Teddy.

I love listening to Artie and I am pissed when he calls in sick but he has a terrible temper that he really needs to work on. No matter what people think about Teddy, no one should have to be worried about getting hit by someone while they are working, or defending themselves. I think Howard needs to really put his foot down. They laid off 8 people in my dept at work for taking sick days last year that they were entitled to! Artie doesn't realize that without the Stern Show, he is nothing and I know that it will only be a matter of time before he kills himself.

If Artie goes to Amsterdam, he will relapse and start up his relationship with his only love - Heroine. Be on a look out for that.

But I do think that the Stern Show are basically being cop-outs today by not replaying the show. When Artie hit Sal with the CD, they replayed that show at least 4 times, but when he "almost" hits Teddy and quits, they are going to skip the day.

Luckily, I was able to also hear the West Coast feed around 11am and I actually left it as a message on my boyfriend's work phone so he would be able to hear since he missed it.

Robin was on the 100 news brief, and you can just hear how pissed she is about the situation. After the incident, she told Howard to send Artie home. She did not want anything to do with him and I agree with her 100%.

What a terrible time for them to go on vacation!

P.S. For those who don't seem to realize how popular Stern still is... since he has left terrestrial radio, he has gained more than 8 million listeners, who (and do the math) pay $12 a month to listen to him. How many people are paying $12 to listen to you!

i missed "THE ARTIE INCIDENT" this morning,and I'm disapointed they're not replaying the show. But, after listening to the wrap up show I feel that Howard threw Artie under the bus. Artie is the Talent part of the show. Teddy is an assistant who should never be involved in on-air things. Howard is and has been completely "yesterdays news". He's not at all relevant anymore.His shows are so boring now. He lost his edge before he ever made the switch to satallite, but now maybe because of the 500 million paycheck or just age catching up to him, he needs Artie to give him countless material and topics to discuss on air. Artie needs help. He has serious anger problems not to mention his numerous addictions. I really like Artie on the show but he really needs to talk to a Doc and get his life straightened out. It will be interesting to hear what happened when they get back from vacation.

Regardless of what Artie does or doesn't want, it all comes down to Howard's decision. Howard needs to keep the show fun, but he must keep the environment safe. And, if Artie can't control his anger better than he did today, it might just be time to say goodbye.

I listen to the Stern Show here in the uk and have done for the last two years. Artie is a very important part of the show and I, for one, would miss him greatly if he left for good. The days that he's "out" sick simply aren't as good and that's a fact.

If Artie wants to come back to the show he should be required to: apologize to the show staff (including Teddy and Howard), Siruis, and to the fans along with agreeing to complete an anger management course before he can ever return. To all those who say that this was a bit for the air - if it was, then why didn't they replay the show? I'll tell you why - they didn't replay it 'cuz it WASN'T a bit!!! If it was all staged, and there no real emotions there, they'd be playing it right now!

As for Artie, I really hope he doesn't throw all this away and leave the show for good. What he should do is this: go enter a 90-day rehab program, clear his head, get off whatever he might on, and just get healthy. Why do I suspect that the number of illegal downloads of Stern quadrupled today, especially those done by subscribers. I think Sirius dropped the ball by letting Howard pull the plug on the replay.

I missed the show, and only caught the news (which I always hate b/c Robin annoys me) and have no doubt this was NOT staged. He needs to be suspended for at least 30 days beginning the day after this latest vacation. He can either complete rehab or be fired. Jackie should be the "temporary" writer. However, this time was more serious. What can you say? We love the guy for this unpredictability, this out-of control ad hoc sense of humor and ultraviolence. Howard always takes the political stance on such issues as he should (for sustainabilities' sake), but we all know he loves it as much as anyone. Anyone that's not 'wet behind the ears,' has either witnessed or participated in a situation that unfolded like this. And good lord, it sucks!. But, as you grow older, you learn to avoid such unfoldings'. Or do you? Or do comedians? Where do you draw the line? Well, if this was joe-schmo corp., then we all know what would be the outcome and repercussions of such an incident. But in this case, the parameters must be considered. Face it Howard, ignorance is not bliss. You can act all you want like, 'If I knew the magnitude of the situation, I would not have provoked it." That's a cop out, and you know it. The show revolves around escalations and deescalations, and your pop-psychology failed you on the predictability of this one.
Am I saying this is to be overlooked. Hell no! However, it's time you grow and learn from this situation like the dysfunctional family you are, and that us listeners love. So many Stern fans are so cynical. This fight was real, not contrived. The fact that it happened just before a break is not indicative of a "cliffhanger" set-up. The fight was related to, or sparked by, the trip. When else would the trip be but over a break? I hope Artie cools off and comes back to the show. He's the best thing on it, and that's saying a lot since the Howard Stern Show is the single greatest source of entertainment currently in existence.

All Artie needs is a hair cut. And Howard is an ass. He tweaks people over and over. Teddy should have been removed from the studio immediately when Artie started screaming...he was clearly enraged. Not replaying the show is so weak. I cannot believe that Howard would censor his own show. We are rabid fans, the show is part of our life, and something happens to a central character and Tim Sabean and Sirius pull the plug. Very weak decision by Howard and the team. This show needs to be replayed.

For Sabean say they are pulling the replay is the lamest decision and a rookie move. Many core fans listen to the replay in the afternoon and evening, and they cannot hear the show. And it is CENSORED by howard and Tim Sabean himself.

Something major happens and hardcore fans are left out in the cold and they are put there by Howard and Tim Sabean and Sirius. Very, very weak.

This show HAS to be replayed and put in rotation.

Artie, with whom most responsiblity lies, was so toxic as to be unbearable to witness in this. He is desperately ill. First, if he had self-esteem he'd not saddle himself with an incompetent personal assistant. Next, Artie seemed to be putting his own words, his own wishful thinking, in Teddy's mouth: "I wish he'd quit, he can't quit..." and so on when it seems from the outcome that in a moment of monumental self-sabotage, Artie set things up so that he had no choice but to announce he was quitting.

I think Howard is a two face jew for not replaying the show. How many times has he started a fight and then let the show go on. Why did he replay the Sal fight that got physical as well.

Stern is the boss regardless of what he puts off on Sirius. Stern lets this build up and happen and it happens after Artie missing time from the show, or sleeping on it. He has said many times that every nice thing that he does is a calculated show business move. If you want to see the real Artie, watch him when he's angry and interacting with someone who he considers to be beneath him. He sucks up to Howard, no matter what Howard says or does, like a puppy, but he goes out of his way to viciously attack the less high-profile people who work for the show, even to the point of a couple of physical assaults. I have loved Artie on the show since he replaced Jackie. He has made the Stern shows 10 times better than it ever was. Has anyone else noticed Arties downslide since the breakup with Dana. He seems to be suffering some serious depression since that happened. He's put on 100 lbs. and he can't sleep at night; he only seems to be able to sleep on the show. Artie needs some professional help and until he gets it he shouldn't be on the show anymore.

artie is a funny guy, but he aint steve martin, or even his idol - belushi. his coin is from the stern show and if he leaves we won't remember his name in 2 years, assuming he's alive. i think he's a low level elvis example of a nice, regular guy who gets destroyed by fame and money. i like artie, but i'm getting a little sick of hearing about how hard his weekend schedule is . . . flying first class and earning what i make in a year. for me, he loses his regular guy appeal and i would not pay to see him because of that. i wish him well at this crossroad.

Stern show will be dead w/o Artie. He's the youngest person on the show and keeps the show relevant. What folks don't understand about Artie is that he's a non-conformist and has trouble getting through life because of it. Also, he's empty inside without Dana...she was everything to him and gave him self-worth. He's a co-dependent mess, but I love him.

Love him or hate him it is never easy to see someone self destruct, especially on a day to day basis.

Without a doubt, Lange doth protests too much. And it's easy to see why: 40-year-old, single man who can only attract women by paying them for sex, major mommy issues, drug and alcohol addiction and, of course, he's in show business. He couldn't be more gay if he walked in the studio with a rainbow flag. Talk about an obvious closet case.

And, yes, the whole "I'm a blue color schlub like all the listeners" routine is not only a joke, but proof of how ignorant some listeners are. He's a multi-millionaire who buys friendship and is about as removed from the working class as any right-wing neocon. Artie is not the friend of the working class. He's a rich, overpaid, spoiled addict who's painfully unfunny and downright dangerous.

Pamela: you really seem to have fallen for this routine. Artie is about as far from "non conformist" as they come. He pretends to be a regular guy but is in essence a rich, self-loathing, closet case who masquerades as an everyday Joe. He does everything in his power to conform. And he fails to any active listener who hears his B.S.

His greatest crime: he's painfully unfunny. Listening to the "Master Tape Theater" reruns and the "Stern Spotlight" shows reveals how much more edgy, smart and sophisticated the show was before "blue collar" Artie came in and lowered the level of everything on the show. These days, half the show is devoted to Artie's weekend, trying to get Artie laid, marveling at Artie's life (?!?) and discussing Artie's weight and addiction. It's become "The Artie Lange Show co-starring Robin and Howard." And it's borderline unlistenable at times.

He's gone. he violently attacked a colleague on the air and, he's second dumbest mistake, he said he couldn't guarantee he wouldn't do it again. If he does, and actually hurts someone, Sirius will pay out millions to whoever's at the receiving end: not only did they allow a dangerous employee to continue in the workplace, he admitted in front of MILLIONS that he might do it. No one, even people with actual talent, are worth that risk.

This might be the best thing to happen to the show. Maybe, just maybe, it might rise above the gutter Lange has dragged it into and reclaim its edge and intelligence. As long as "Hampton's Howie" isn't so led by his pants and bougeouis status (the interview with Billy Joel's wife and his fiancee was the most embarassing moment in the history of the Stern show).

I guess all of the news reports about him, and the merger of Sirius and XM due to his success on Sirius (now they will have about 20 million listeners), and the fact that you're here talking about him is proof enough that he is relevant.

Artie has all the symptoms of Cushing's Disease and needs to get checked out by an endocrinologist who specializes in Cushing's. The extreme weight gain, the sleep problems, the rage....all part of the big picture. I bet he has a lot more symptoms he isn't talking about as well.
