American Idol 7: Week 11 power rankings

david cookThings are getting a bit lopsided on “American Idol,” so it’s no wonder producers are looking to make some changes.

For Neil Diamond Week, like most weeks, David Cook approached it with the most contemporary and the most artistic arrangements and performances, while David Archuleta performed in a way that would likely land him the most votes. Which of them will end up winning this season is a matter of a different debate.

The problem for the show is that it’s basically a foregone conclusion that one of them will win, meaning most of America can tune out for the next three weeks. Brooke, Syesha and Jason simply don’t seem to have the tools to compete with the Davids, lacking either the smarts or the skills to avoid being outclassed.

In previous years, any one of them could have been serious contenders. Brooke’s “I Am I Said” was touching. Syesha’s “Thank the Lord for the Nighttime” was entertaining. And both were arguably better than Archuleta’s safe performances, but nowhere near as crafty and effective as Cook’s.

THE RANKINGS
David Cook, “All I Really Need Is You’
David Cook, “I’m Alive”
Brooke White, “I Am I Said”
Syesha Mercado, “Thank the Lord for the Nighttime”
David Archuleta, “Sweet Caroline”
Jason Castro, “Forever in Blue Jeans”
David Archuleta, “America”
Syesha Mercado, “Hello Again”
Jason Castro, “September Morn”
Brooke White, “I’m a Believer”

BOTTOM TWO: Jason, Syesha
WILL BE CUT: Syesha
SHOULD BE CUT: Jason
ACTUALLY CUT: ??

what was up with Paula's comment of Jason's 2nd perfomance before he even perfomed??

@sk: I know there's a lot of conspiracy theories going on about it, but I chalk it up to her being confused by the format change and, well, unable to count and/or talk clearly. Later on, she told Syesha that she wanted to say something about her first performance because she didn't get a chance to, which means, I think her negative comments were intended for Brooke. Then again, my Paula-to-English translation may be faulty...

I disagree with your ranking. Syesha was great. Her performance was far better than Jason and Brook. Also, I thought both Davids were weak!

Do we all need to get on the band wagon and promote the Davids. Too much hype on these two...

I disagree -

Sayesha was great.

The contestants actually sing several times for the audience and judges before singing live for the cameras. Paula, who seems easily confused, was referring to one of those performances.

I agree with most of your rankings except I think Syesha deserves to be third behind David Cook for her "Thank the Lord for the Nighttime." I also don't think she deserves to go home this week. If I were picking, I'd send Jason home and after him, Brooke. And is anyone else bored to tears by David Archuleta? In the very beginning, when he sang "Imagine" I thought he was fantastic, but each week he seems to get more and more saccharine (sp?). I can't imagine him making a pop album anyone would buy. Inspirational music, maybe, but that seems to be his limit.

@tc: Amen on the hype about The Davids, but they really are the favorites -- though each for very different reasons. And I agree that Syesha's second song was pretty great.

@pat: I'm with you on sending Jason home first. I just thought that all his dialing-crazy fans would keep him safe. However, apparently America agrees with you on Syesha. According to dialidol.com, Syesha and David C. are safe, while Jason and Brooke are in trouble.

ITA about Jason being the person who should get sent home. I think Brooke after him, so I don't agree completely with your ranking.

I agree with the general attitude about David A. I was floored by "Imagine" but each week it seems like the is singing the same style...so it is getting boring. I still luv him though!

I really think David Cook should win. He is fantastic! I think that it should end up like this:
1. David Cook
2. David A.
3. Syesha
4. Brooke
5. Jason (voted off tonight)

I think Jason is still on because he has a lot of fans because he is cute. I think he can sing, but he is another person who really sings the same style every week.

I Agree..Syeshais better than Jason and Brooke but the odds are that she is going home tonite. I thought she sounded fabulous last night (as good as a professional singer). On a positive note, we all know you don't have to WIN American Idol to get a recording contract. Look at all the runner-ups of the past. Chris Daughtry is BIG and he was voted off so ( and can't forget Jennifer Hudson) even when Syesha is sent home I expect her to accomplish great things as a recording artist and I will support her all the way..

If I have to pick an American Idol of who is left..I would have to go for David Cook. I am not much of a rocker but David Archuleta gets on my nerves and he far less talented than David Cook..
