R.I.P. Miriam Makeba (1932-2008)
Miriam Makeba, "Pata Pata"
Miriam Makeba, the legendary South African singer known as "Mama Africa," died last night after collapsing onstage shortly after performing in Italy. She was 76.
Makeba was a musical and political leader, beloved for her stunning vocals and her work against apartheid that caused her to be banned from South Africa.
``Her haunting melodies gave voice to the pain of exile,'' said Nelson Mandela in a statement. ``At the same time, her music inspired a powerful sense of hope in all of us. She was South Africa's first lady of song.''
Both aspects of her work made her one of the leaders of the world music resurgence in America over the years, collaborating with many American stars including Paul Simon. She will be missed.
