There is an Empty Office

First of all, I know. I know what you are thinking. You liked the double dose of Grey’s but you wished it would have been one hour of old school Grey’s and one hour of Addison in LA. But let’s be real here. If Grey’s would have started at 8pm and the spinoff preview at 9pm, you would have made an excuse. You would have said “If it becomes a show, I’ll watch it”. THen you would have read a book, or washed your clothes or gone to bed early before your last day of work. They had to do it this way to get you hooked. Don’t be mad, just put it in perspective. Grey’s Anatomy is like coming home to New Orleans for Christmas break after your first semester at LSU. The Addison spin-off is like your first parent-less, homework-less, bring a Coke to class week of college. They are both great and both equally enjoyable in their own time. On that note, in order to discuss them, I have to break it down.

First, classic GA. Christina, the woman who could never be labeled a bridezilla, is trying to choose bridemaids and bridesmaids dresses. Quite the dilemma, considering she is a surgeon - not a bride. All the while, her knight and shining groom, is feeling hesitant because his MAMA is questioning his decision. If Burke pulls a Runaway Bride scene in the finale, I am going to be one pouty girl all summer. Well, at least for that last week in May I will be.

Next, the Romeo and Juliet aka Derek and Meredith. Their tragic love story is starting to get old. She is dark and twisted, we know this. She can’t deal with tragedy or drama or heartache or decision-making. That’s why she drinks and ends up in bed with random men like McDreamy. We know this. So why is Derek acting like this is a surprise? Why is he trying to change her? Maybe he is looking for an out and instead of moving back to NYC, he thinks picking on Meredith’s faults will lend him an out. If that’s the case, I am so not into him.

Finally, the love triangle that is Calizzy O’Malley. Maybe its me, but I think Izzy and George have never had a good friend of the opposite sex. I think they are taking their ‘friendship’ to a level that is unnecessary. Maybe its because I am not a fan of cheaters, but I think they are misguided by their feelings. It is possible to be great friends with someone of the opposite sex and not sleep with them. I think several people reading this are shaking their heads and rolling their eyes in disagreement - but that is my opinion.

Ok, now on to Viva la Addison. As we all know, everything seems too convenient for Big Red to move to LA. There is an open office. There is a best friend. There is sunshine and cute boys. If ABC doesn’t move Addy into primetime, some other network will.

Despite spin-off speculation from the masses, I think the spin-off is already a hit. They pulled together the biggest TV lead actor/actresses all under one Wellness roof and question whether or not it will work? PLEASE. The chemistry so far is completely reminiscent of Grey’s Season One. They act as if they have worked together for years. Perhaps, that is the art of acting. Ha!

I could go on about each character I enjoyed, however I think I will leave it to quick observations to recap the night.

1. Elevators and Stairwells - I have an elevator at work, I am on the 31st floor. Seems like I would have plenty of time to have a life changing heart to heart conversation with some one. Never happened. Also, don’t you think many of the characters end up on random floors because they just had an awkward run in with someone? I have a stairwell at work. Never been in it. Apparently the door locks behind you if you try to take the stairs. No one has offered me a life altering kiss in the stairwell. Maybe I need to take the stairs more often.
2. With Addison’s big move to LA, she has upgraded from salmon colored scrubs to…wait for it….PURPLE scrubs. Now there’s a step in the right direction.
3. Did anyone think the shirtless surfer boy scene had a pleasant resemblance to the Diet Coke commercial circa 1994? Diet Coke Break. Diet Coke Break.
4. Finally, the end scene with Addy driving off in the red convertible (not sure what model of car) was very similar to Reese Witherspoon in Cruel Intentions. I love that movie, so the resemblance is ok.

In the end, I loved it all. Not quite sure what I will do this summer without it.
