SYTYCD #23: Season 4 is Over!

SYTYCD Blog

Well, everyone, So You Think You Can Dance? Season 4 has come to an end! The Top 4 put in amazing performances on Wednesday, but America voted...and it all comes down to one lucky and talented winner. I was a little surprised by it, though.

Really? I wasn't at all.

We'll discuss that more in just a little bit. Let's start off by going through the big finale, though. I assumed everyone watched?

DancerX.jpgThis was the best year we've ever seen...the dances have been spectacular. And as nice as it would have been to relive the greatest moments of Season 4...no. Dancer X did not watch, already knowing how the show was going to end, anyway.

Clyde.jpgGood man or woman or whatever you are, X. I'll fully admit, I didn't watch the entire show. In fact, I was watching the season finale of Last Comic Standing, and, while I DID predict the winner of THAT show correctly...only saw bits and pieces of SYTYCD. No big, deal, though...I mean, they only had 2 minutes worth of interesting new information to tell us.

Nope. Didn't care at all. Who won?

Well...I was going to have us talk about the entire finale and hold that off until the end, but...if no one WATCHED, we might as well forget that idea.

Tango.jpgNow, just a minute, Julie! Not all of us let you down. Of course I watched! It was a great show, and it's a disgrace that those three decided not to tune in. I oughta' lock you all away!

DancerX.jpgKeep your hands off Dancer X! It is not necessary to watch when you have ALREADY SCRIPTED OUT THE ENTIRE SHOW FOR AMERICA. LOOK AT THE PREDICTIONS...DANCER X IS A GENIUS!

Sit down, Dancer X. And, thank you, Sgt. Tango. At least YOU were there with us! Overall, good finale, better than American Idol's finale. And no Julie, that wasn't a jab at your precious David Cook, that was a jab at how annoying, overdone, and lame American Idol is. I mean did you see an 10 minute long advertisements for a Mike Myers movie during the show tonight? No. It was all about the dancing. Well done Nigel, and Simon Fuller on getting at least one show right.

Clyde.jpgI can't believe anyone would call this stupid show lame compared to Idol. Idol is absolutely vanilla and predictable, and they waste a LOT of time. But THIS show is a disjointed, unbearable parade of annoying people. There's no contest...Idol is SO much better, I can't believe that this thing has even been on the air for 4 seasons.

You know what? This is actually pretty interesting...let's just talk about the show a bit and maybe we can bring up a thing or two that happened during the finale, just kind of do a highlight reel and then go to the big results!

Sounds good to me. Did they do the Bollywood dance, again?

They did! Nigel's favorite dance of the season was Katee and Joshua's Bollywood number, and it was one of my favorites, too! I was so glad when the show started branching out to different forms of dance, it really made for a more well-rounded competition, taking everyone out of their comfort zones. It also brought awareness to other cultures of dance…ok go ahead call me a nerd and make fun of me now.

Clyde.jpgYou're a nerd. But not because you like this dance style. It's a shame I missed the Bollywood thing, actually. I didn't see that the first time, and I was interested. Oh, well. I missed the rerun of that dance, and I'm not interested enough to look around YouTube. I like Indian pop music. It's infectious, and injecting something a bit foreign is always interesting in a competition like this. You know, like when Sanjaya sang "Besame Mucho" on Idol. Admit it...there was something hauntingly enjoyable about that performance.

Tango.jpgIt is a shame you missed it, Clyde. I really liked that Asian stuff!! This season was really good on the choreography...

Oooh, hey! Daphne, how about that dance-off between Robert Muraine and Phillip Chebeeb?

They were awesome...I couldn't have voted on who was better though, because they were both sick!

The dance off between these two was mind-blowing! It's just incredible the way these guys are able to move their bodies. I totally agree with the judges that Robert won, but I gained new respect for Chebeeb seeing him go up against him, they really were well matched.

Clyde.jpgI flipped over to FOX43 around 9:30, saw that "door dance" with the Duffy song, and was glad I caught it. I'm absolutely in love with Duffy's music, and I had a thought.

There's a first.

Clyde.jpgQuiet, you. I realized that I enjoyed the dance more when I knew the song. It's no secret that I'm more into music than dance, and I got to thinking...maybe this show wouldn't be so painful if I at least recognized and liked more of the song choices? I'll go back into the Idol Chatter Playbook (TM) and issue a Song Choice Warning to So You Think You Can Dance? until they come around and stop picking awful music to dance to. It's at the heart of why I like Idol better, I think...it's hard for me to quantify who is truly better or worse, here. I don't much care about the minutiae of dance, but singing...you can HEAR a bad note. You can HEAR nerves, and a botched lyric moment sticks with a performer for the rest of the season. You can evaluate how they sing songs, because, usually, you're familiar with the songs they're covering. Dance is too ADD for me. It just jumps around, and no one can clearly or concisely explain what they show's really about or how it works. It's as if they're making it up as they go along, and it's SEASON 4! Besides, this season ends with an asterisk, anyway. With Jessica going home due to injury and Comfort coming back after having been voted off...the results of everything that happened after that week are fatally flawed. I know the show must go on, but...not cool. I didn't like it when Idol had to screw around with results due to voting problems, either. It cheapens the entire show!

Well although they're made by the same creators, a Dancing and Singing competition have to be different. The song choices are often popular songs, but to do many of the dancing styles popular songs just don't fit. I applaud the creators with taking a risk and doing something that might not be popular LIKE the Bollywood dancing-it actually turned out well. Now with the voting issues...singing can easily go from solo to group without a problem, and no one ever has to rely on anyone else to help them in the competition. With dancing, although there is only one winner, most of the time you have to rely on your partner to help you out. I know it doesn't seem far to have one girl leave and another come back, but it really was the best option-having the last girl voted off come back. It may not have been an easy decision to make, but they had to for the competition to go on, and I think they made the right choice. As for that dance...Clyde, seems you actually AGREED with Mary on something! For those who don't remember, Mary's next choice for her favorite routine was Katee and Twitch doing Mia Michaels' Contemporary routine with the door. I loved this dance the first time around, and I loved it just as much this time. Mia comes up with such interesting stories to tell…and yes, Dancer X, I know it's another abusive relationship story, but I like the abuse.

DancerX.jpgOh, you're one of THOSE girls, eh? It is a trope that the choreographers have relied upon far too frequently...and it simply become tiresome. Not to mention, it gives Dancer X pause to reflect on the state of domestic violence in America.

Tango.jpgIt's true. On the force, I saw way too many relationships end in bitter dance fights.

Clyde.jpgWell, between simulated sexual intercourse and spousal abuse, this show really does paint an ugly picture. Those choreographers must be pretty screwed up. Anyway, I just wanted to bring that up and send a shout-out to Duffy. What else crappened last night, ladies?

Let's see...we also saw Nigel and Mary dance!

Mary danced? Now I'm REALLY glad I didn't watch.

Clyde.jpgWith you on that. I hate her more than life.

Tango.jpgMARY MURPHY IS A TREASURE, YOU UNGRATEFUL PUNKS!

Settle down, Sarge. It's ok. Mary danced with past contestant Dimitry to a Samba, and I almost would have believed that Mary's routine wasn't taped if it weren't for the audio issues. It was a little creepy seeing her dance with Dimitry, though. When she wasn't looking at the camera it almost looked like she was one of the other girls this season, and then she twirled around and it was like "Ahh! It's Mary!" Old woman's crazy face on a young girl's dress. It was just weird for me.

Clyde.jpgNightmare-worthy, just hearing you describe it! I'd rather listen to Paula Abdul's crappy "Dance Like There's No Tomorrow" single.

Tango.jpgNightmare? I think Mary can really MOVE! I didn't see that coming. Reminds me of the old days...

Finally, Mary Murphy doing something that isn't TALKING.

Mary dancing was...odd. Nigel dancing was cool, though!

Nigel joined the Debbie Allen Dance Academy for a Tap Dance routine, but I thought Nigel made it a bit cheesy. It was fine as just the kids...but, I guess I understand a little cheese in the finale.

Tango.jpgDid you know that I used to tap like that?

Show me your moves!

Tango.jpgNot with my bad knees...but back in the day, I could've held my own on that stage.

Clyde.jpgThis is So You Think You Dance? not Cop Rock.

Julie, Nigel dancing may have been a little cheesy...but this show STILL wasn't anywhere NEAR as cheesy as the American Idol finale.

Clyde.jpgSomeone's jealous they're not on the Idol Chatter panel.

Please...and have to spend more time with YOU? No thanks.

DancerX.jpgDANCE BLOG FOREVER!

Look. They're BOTH really cheesy, dogg. Debate settled!

How about the Cirque du Soleil-Cast of Criss Angel: Believe "Homage to the Rabbits?" Wasn't that totally freaky?

The bunnies were creepy, but I did like the dance, despite the creepiness.

All the dancers in bunny suits dancing in front of a bunny in a coffin? I love Wade as a choreographer, but this scared me just a little.

Tango.jpgRabbit people! Very dark, tribal and artistic.

Before we wrap this up, I just wanted to mention two other dances. Mia Michael's favorite dance was Katee and Will's Pas de Duex, probably the most perfect dance of the whole season. The two strongest dancers technically in the whole competition dancing a beautifully complicated routine together, absolutely flawlessly. After they had that one minor turn issue their first time dancing this, I knew they would get a second chance doing it in the finale, and they nailed it.

Tango.jpgBeautiful don't you think, Dancer X? Or is it not good enough?

DancerX.jpgGood enough...but not good enough for either of them to win the competition.

We're getting to the results, don't worry...

Clyde.jpgThe girl you think should win and the guy you loved to drool over...fitting that you'd like this one, Julie!

Favorites aside, this is just a great dance, Clyde! It was great to see it, again. And Adam chose Sonja's piece "The Garden" with Courtney and Mark. I know not everyone understands this routine, but I really like it. It's so raw and animalistic. I just love it.

Clyde.jpgOh, wait. Hey, I knew the Jonas Brothers were schedule to appear, and I turned the channel as soon as I heard Cat Deely say, "The Jonas." I think I watched for a total of maybe 5 minutes, because they came up after that door dance...and I never went back. I hate them. Hate, hate, hate. Hate. Hate their success, hate their little "clean teen" image, hate their desperate pleas for respect as a REAL rock band when it's clear the Disney Machine (TM) chewed them up and spit them out as palatable, plastic, inoffensive wondercreatures. And, most of all, I hate how I'm being forced to see them pop up all over the place. Can't wait until their 15 minutes of fame is up. They're all hideously ugly, too. And history has shown that ugly men can rock. I mean, look at the Stones, or Ozzy, or Gene Simmons. The list goes on, but ugly dudes tend to rock. Can't wait to see David Cook opening for them on their next concert tour, though. That'd be the perfect marriage of mind-numbing, forgettable faux rockers!

Clyde...this is usually where I jump in and yell at you for being mean. But...I'm sorry, I know they're super popular and every teen and tween loves them, but I don't care about these kids or their songs.

Clyde.jpgJulie, it is always so refreshing to hear you tear something down. And are you just going to let me get away with the David Cook thing?

THAT was uncalled for, and I was trying to ignore it. You all know I try to stay nice, but...yeah, I can't support the Jonas Brothers.

Don't ask me about the Jonas Brothers, because I felt the need to run around screaming "OMG! THE JONAS BROTHERS!!!" in a mocking tone, so I actually missed their performance. Oops.

But, with that ugliness out of the way...let's get to those results!

Before we do, remind everyone what our winner receives, Julie!

Clyde.jpgPlease, enlighten me. I'm still confused.

Yeah, I have no clue what they're competing for, still.

Well, Adam Shankman announced at the beginning of the show that, along with the $250,000 prize, the winner would have a spot in his new movie Step Up 3-D!

Clyde.jpgReally? Is being in Step Up 3-D a prize or a punishment? Yuck.

Dance%20Results%20Joshua.bmp

Joshua has been declared America's Favorite Dancer. I have to say that I am surprised, I really thought that if Katee didn't have it that Twitch would. But I guess Joshua was the Dark Horse I wasn't expecting. I'm not upset that he won, because he's a wonderful dancer and I'm glad that it was a Hip Hop dancer this year, but I'm still surprised.

Like I said at the beginning of this thing, I wasn't really surprised. I was predicting Katee, because she was technically the best, but then again if viewers of these types of show actually voted on who was the best technically, Melinda Doolittle would have won American Idol two years ago. So, I should have known. No disappointment though. All four dancers were so very talented. Joshua deserved it. I did think it was really stupid that Katee, who came in THIRD place, won $50,000...and Twitch who came in second place got....well, the rights to second place. What is up with that?

Clyde.jpgThat WAS weird. So, Joshua won. I'd like to say I'm disappointed, but it's just the kind of insipid choice one should expect from this show. Come on, no one is going to remember this guy 6 months from now. He's not becoming a star. Stop trying to make Joshua happen, Dance. He's not going to happen. As for my prediction that Twitch would win, I think the show was clearly rigged and I don't much care.

Tango.jpgAll of those young successful dancers together. They look like me when I was a young whippersnapper! Joshua deserves to win. He was so graceful and strong. A true top guy! This Sergeant salutes you, Joshua!

Let's take a look at who everyone here picked, again.

Blogger%20Picks.bmp

DancerX.jpgDancer X read America's sentiments exactly. Dancer X chose Joshua, and the show unfolded precisely as predicted. And now, Dancer X retires to the shadows, undefeated, until another season of Dance is upon us. Don't bet against The X.

Just goes to show you...you can not like the show and STILL get it completely right.

Clyde.jpgCongratulations to Artie Funk and Dancer X, the Lords of the Dance and the only ones with the clear vision and keen judgement to take this show SERIOUSLY and pick the right contestant. Artie, X, you have outshined even Julie and Daphne in your abilities, and I fully expect you to join this blog team EVERY WEEK next season and bring that So You Think You Can Dance? expertise you've shown.

But...what'll you do?

Clyde.jpgI won't be involved in any way.

I...I don't like that at all. What about Julie and Daphne?

Clyde.jpgThey're fired.

Harsh. Well, I'd like to thank you for that kind offer -

Don't we get a say?

It IS our column.

Clyde.jpgYou two did a LOVELY job this season...but, it's obvious now that Artie and Dancer X are truly the masters.

Clyde! That's SO not happening.

Good. That would kill me.

DancerX.jpgDancer X shall pass, as well.

Sounds good to me, because I'm not about to give up my spot!

Neither am I! Daphne and I will be back next season, and I'm taking a long-awaiting blogging break until American Idol starts up again!

Clyde.jpgBlogging breaks are lovely. I'm heading straight back to Maui after this.

Of COURSE you are...

Clyde.jpg...where else would I be, Daph? I have to prepare myself mentally for another season of American Idol. FOX43's only decent talent competition!

DancerX.jpgSilence, hater! Dancer X will put Joshua up against David Cook any day!

Tango.jpgThat's it. Where are my cuffs?

Daphne, Julie, good job on the blog all summer. Artie's outta' here!

So are we! Thanks for reading, Dance-heads!

See you next time.
