Bad beat hits at Gulfstream
In keeping with the flood of bad beats over $100,000, Gulfstream's hit last week for $107,711.
The winning player had four eights; the loser four fours. Both declined to be identified.
The big winner (loser) received 50%, or $53,855. The hand that beat him received 30%, or $32,313. The remaining 8 players at the table received 20%, or $2,692 each
Meanwhile, Gulfstream is having some success with a "turbo" sit-and-go, a winner-take-all that goes quickly. The sit-and-go died somewhat after last July 1 when the cash limit became $100, so it's good to see it afloat again.
Overall, card room gross receipts are chugging along, according to the latest state figures. They've crossed $3 million, about 3 times the amount of Mardi Gras, but still only about half of Palm Beach Kennel and The Isle.
They've also even with Flagler, the only card room doing much in Miami-Dade.
NICK SORTAL began playing 3-card "gut" and "Indian poker" on high school band trips, moved on to "night baseball" and "pass the trash" during a Dr. Pepper-infused midnight game in the 1980s at the St. Louis Globe-Democrat, and now play in a regular neighborhood Hold 'Em game in Plantation. I have been given the assignment of writing about the gambling life in South Florida casinos for the Sun-Sentinel...which means sitting around watching poker on TV now counts as research.
