A losing ticket still can be a good thing...

If you bet on a loser at Pompano Harness track, don't throw away your ticket: In September, Dunkin’ Donuts, 1405 S. Powerline Road in Pompano Beach, will honor losing pari-mutuel tickets with your choice of a free medium hot or iced coffee or one free baked good (donut, bagel, muffin).

In return, Dunkin’ Donuts customers who bring a receipt from the 1405 S. Powerline Road store to the track get a free Pompano Park Race program.

The partnership is highlighted on Sept. 27 with a Dunkin' Donuts grand opening event featuring harness drivers Wally Hennessey, Bruce Ranger and Dan Clements signing autographs and posing with fans from 10 a.m. to noon.

Slot tournaments come to Seminole Hard Rock

Slot tournaments begin Sept. 2 for gamblers 55 and older at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. Everyone else can start playing on Sept. 8.

Earlier this month, the casino started its "Classic Rockers" club, which is heavy on Tuesday day promotions (when its young, beautiful clientele is either sleeping or at work). They'll be held in the non-smoking portion of the casino.

The tournaments will have 10 5-minute spin sessions and can hold up to 25 players each, making for 250 players. The top five players each week win prizes. The tournament begins at 9, but signup at 8:30. They'll run until about 2 p.m.

Prizes: $250 cash for first, free play for the rest ($100, $75, $50 and $25).

There's also the $50,000 "King of the Rock" tournament.
They're Sept. 8, 15, 22 and 29, Oct. 6, 13, 20, 27 and Nov. 3 and 10.
The 10-week tournament consists of 13, five-minute sessions.
Registration begins at 3 p.m. with tournament play commencing at 4 p.m. and every 20 minutes thereafter. The last session is at 8 p.m.

It's $1,000 for first, $500 for second, $200 for third.

After the conclusion of the 10-week tournament, the top 25 players’ scores pay:
$10,000 for first, $5,000 for second, $3,000 for third, $2,000 for fourth, $1,000 for fifth. Sixth through 10th is $500, 11-15th $300, and 16-25th $200.

The move comes after The Isle in Pompano and Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach began slot tournaments earlier this summer. Both venues report strong participation.

In all cases, casino visitors must join the Players Club to get into the tournament.

Gulfstream gets new assistant GM

Mike%20Chapple%20preferred.jpg

Mike Chapple has been named assistant general manager at Gulfstream Park. He has been vice president of security and surveillance.

He came to Gulfstream Park in 2006 after serving at Remington for 17 years. He was on hand when Remington opened its slot business in 2005 and was a consultant when Gulfstream opened its slots the next year, according to a news release from Gulfstream.

In making the announcement, Gulfstream Park President and General Manager Bill Murphy said: “Mike has been a tremendous asset to MEC from the start and his impact at Gulfstream Park was both positive and immediate. This promotion serves as recognition to his contributions to MEC and Gulfstream Park as well as to the degree of respect I have for him personally. Mike built positive relationships with local law enforcement and horsemen’s groups, both here and in Oklahoma. He’s the consummate professional.”

Chapple completed the Groom Elite Certification Course, which teaches students the intricacies of horsemanship, particularly as it affects racehorses.

His quote, from the release: “My career with MEC has afforded me the opportunity to work with some true professionals, most recently Bill Murphy, whom I’ve known and worked with since the early ‘90s. On a personal level, Bill is one of the finest people I’ve known. The faith he places on people as individuals and the accent he places on teamwork is of tremendous value to all of us here.”

Coconut Creek packs 'em in for 'Crazy 8s'

P1010002.JPG

It started last year: Seminole Casino Coconut Creek’s Marketing Director Michael Michaud had the idea: Give away $777 every 7 minutes from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. on 7/7/07.

“My staff unanimously rejected it,” he recalled in a Seminole Coconut Creek news release. “They didn’t think it would be possible for us to manage a drawing every seven minutes for 12 hours straight.”

This year, they repeated it, on 8/8/08; “Crazy 8’s,” with $888 given away every eight minutes from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m.

At 9 p.m., Yolanda Gihha (center, with casino master of ceremonies Steve Lewis at left, and casino promotions manager, Gary Friedman at right) won the $28,416 pot of unclaimed, accumulated cash. That feature is important to the overall success of the promotion, Michaud noted, because “it keeps people here playing all day and into the night.”

This year 90 players took home a total of $79,920. “We ran out of parking in our 3,000-space lot both years,” he said.

The casino estimates it drew 10,000 people on Aug. 8 to the approximately 45,000-square-foot facility.

They plan to do it next year, on 9/9/09.

"Little Fish" as ready as he'll ever be

As all-business as a first-day kindergartener can possibly be in the morning, my son pulls on his Power Rangers T-shirt, grabs his SpongeBob SquarePants lunchbox and crawls among the newspapers, banana peels and running shoes that I call my car.

I'd like to catch you all up on a commentary I wrote a year ago that carried the headline "Is the Little Fish Ready for the Big Pond?" My wife and I had debated whether to start our son, Aaron, in kindergarten last fall because he turned 5 on Aug. 22, which slid him just under the Sept. 1 cutoff date. I had the biggest misgivings about starting him because I didn't want him being the smallest and the youngest, and because boys mature later than girls anyway.

To make a long story short, we waited. So at age 6, our red-haired, smiling baby left the nest for kindergarten Monday.

Is he ready now? Well, certainly more than he would have been last year. His extra year at a new preschool and five weeks at yet another venue, a summer camp, have him as prepared as he'll ever be.

We knew we did the right thing back in December, when his preschool teachers talked about how he was a leader in class, listened well and could do most of the boyish things his classmates did on the playground. He felt like he belonged.

But Monday it became time to belong all over again.

I drive up to the overflow traffic at our school and park what seems like a mile away. It's 7:40 and his first steps to kindergarten begin, on a sunny morning with volunteers everywhere in orange vests, pointing out directions.

I see other parents hustling their children along, but today I'm more than happy to dawdle. We follow the blue line to our pod of classrooms, where parents are standing with their children, all waiting for the doors of academia to open for the very first time. Not as many video cameras as you'd expect, and all the children walking, so, so independently.

Another boy checks out Aaron's backpack, and aggressively nudges it back toward Aaron, unintentionally bonking him on the nose. My son is known to tear up easily, and for a second I see an emotional wobble, but he gets over it quickly. I wonder whether he would have handled it as well at this time a year ago.

I break the apparent unwritten first-day code, picking up my son and hugging him close, not for his sake, but for mine. He's usually a chatterbox, but today he doesn't have much to say, and rests his head silently on my shoulder.

I have not one single intelligent word of advice, and even if I did delivering them through a cracking voice won't help. I know wondering "where did the years go" is universal, but in my case it's particularly haunting -- because we had that extra one.

Our teacher waves us into our room, which is an educational Disneyland of colors, pictures and words. So much to learn: letters, numbers and manners. We've worked on all three, now we'll see how we do when it counts. How will he (OK, we) stack up? For a moment I catch myself sizing up his classmates like a new player at the park checks out the competition at a pickup basketball game.

But at least I'm not as bad as my friend Scot in St. Louis, who already is calling Stanford as he maps strategy for his 4-year-old son. Scot's train is running like this: Ask Stanford what high schools they like in St. Louis, then call those high schools and ask what middle schools are the best. Then, of course, call the middle schools to find out ... their elementary schools. So, sanity is relative.

Aaron works his way through the pack of children to put his backpack in his cubbyhole and I stand off at a distance, quietly encouraging his independence. But for a moment he's lost between the mass of parents, kids and desks, and during that instant I feel like I'm the panicked parent at the shopping mall, instead of a dad in a secure classroom.

He sits primly at his desk, ignoring the fresh crayons and looking down the barrel of the start of his formal education. A confident 46-pound left-hander with a quick brain and a good heart.

The teacher finally announces that it's time for parents to leave, and I pick up my son and hold him close. Then a little bit closer. Those loosely scheduled days of just a boy and a dad hanging out seem oh-so-distant right now.

"Put me down, Daddy," he says. "It's time for school."

Anyone else going stir-crazy?

When Ernesto came, I hosted the neighborhood poker game. We didn't have anything else to do. Wanted to host a game last night, but bought in too much to the storm hype.

On vacation this week, so it's been hours and hours in the house. Couldn't bring myself to leave last night and even go to a bar game (by the way, I have a bar poker story running Friday in Showtime section).

Busting out today, to go play the 3 p.m. $25 tournament at Dania, then might head elsewhere, weather permitting. If you feel a need to get out, meet me over there.

A tux for a giveaway

100_0750.JPG

On a recent night of bar poker at Billy's on SR 84 in Davie, dealer Leonard Brown decided to take things a little further: He dressed up in a tux and got flowers for the nine players vying for tickets to Busch Gardens, a one-time giveaway.

The top three qualifiers from play on three previous nights played it out.

I did a story last week on bar poker, and also included a link to all the bar poker web sites I know.

You have a favorite place to play? Why?

Next Seminole $3,000 tournament helps Ann Storck Center

The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino will host the third in a series of $3,000 buy-in charity poker tournaments to benefit local non-profit organizations on Aug. 22-24 in the Poker Room at Seminole Paradise.

Players can choose either of the first days of play, either 10 a.m. Aug. 22 or 23, with the second day of play on Aug. 24.

The benefit this time is the Ann Storck Center, which serves children and adults in South Florida afflicted with severe and multiple developmental disabilities.

To date, Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino has donated $60,000 to charity. The Miami Beach Health Foundation has received $40,000 from the inaugural May tournament that saw Doron Malinasky of Hollywood win first-place prize of $98,280, according to the release (he actually brokered a deal and took less); while the Hollywood Police Athletic League (PAL) tournament in July netted $20,000 and awarded $56,300 to Richard Kirsch of Pompano.

Registration begins Aug. 15 in the Poker Room at Seminole Paradise. Cash sales only. With the purchase of a buy-in, each player will receive 20,000 starting units. For more information, call 954-327-ROCK.

Bodog posts odds for World Series finalists

Gambling site Bodog.com says:

Leading the way at the November final table with 26.2 million in chips is the amatuer poker player from Illinois, Dennis Phillips, and Bodog is giving him 3 to 1 odds that he can take it down. Less than 2 million in chips behind Phillips is Muscovite Ivan Demidov (24.4 million), who is also sitting at 3 to 1 odds as he's just a pot or two out of the chip lead.

Next up is Canadian poker player Scott Montgomery and his 19.7 million chip stack. Due to his recent final table appearance at the WPT LA Poker Classic and the fact that he is one of the most experienced players at the final table, which unfortunately isn't saying much, his odds are currently running at 4 to 1. Montgomery is followed by Danish poker player Peter Eastgate, who will start with 18.3 million in chips and odds of 11 to 2 that he can overtake the top three spots to win.

The next two WSOP final tablists have almost identical chip stacks but different experience levels. Ylon Schwartz only has a 5,000 chip lead over Darus Suharto but the odds for the two are 8 to 1 and 17 to 2, respectively -- comment by Nick here: You know, those odds aren't that far apart Bodog, get over yourselves! -- mainly because Schwartz is a known veteran of the Brooklyn poker scene while Suharto is an unknown player with very limited live poker success, up until now.

Toward the bottom of the posted odds is the most experienced player at the final table, David "Chino" Rheem. Unfortunately, despite his live tournament success, his short chip stack of 10.2 million leaves him with a lot of work to do and a 19 to 2 chance of getting that work done. Below him is Craig Marquis at 10 to 1. The shortest stack at the table is Kelly Kim with 2.6 million and is thus the long shot to win the title at 25 to 1.
