Florida Lottery issues coupons for first time since 1996

Here's what our economy is coming to: Even The Florida Lottery is handing out coupons.

The lottery sent a coupon flyer to 7.8 million homes last week, with buy-one, get-one-free offers and information on a new "second-chance" drawing. Lottery sales are down about 7 percent from last year, and there's a need to generate interest in some of its lesser-known games, said the Lottery's Jackie Barreiros.

"We're not just Powerball and Lotto," she said. "People sometimes forget that."

The tickets are for: Buy-one get one for $1 scratch-off, $2 scratch-off, Fantasy Five and Mega Money tickets; $2 off any $5 scratch-off ticket; $5 off a Billion Dollar Blockbuster ticket.

Total savings: $12.

The Lottery's goal was to deliver coupons to every household in the state. If you didn't get your coupons, go to the district lottery office in West Palm Beach, she said. But you have to sign for them.

"We’re just not handing them out blindly to everyone," she said.

The sales effect: "Too soon to tell."

My take: It's not quite like getting free money but it sure cuts into the percentages. With the lottery games overall taking 50 percent of what you wager, a two-for-one makes it an even bet.
By the way, horse racing pays back 80 percent and slots more than 90 percent.

The lottery also is promoting the Billion Dollar Blockbuster second-chance game. You go to FlaLottery.com, register your non-winning Billion Dollar Blockbuster ticket, with name and e-mail address; they start drawings on April 6 and email you if you win.

It's the first time since 1996 coupons have been issued.

So, will the coupons entice you to play more? I haven't played in years, but now the price is right.

Also, since you're here on the gambling blog, check my main page and skim through all the other articles about local casinos, the state legislature and the compact and a goofy way to calm your poker nerves.

And if you want to just go totally crazy, just bookmark me. I think it's worth your time.

Oxytocin accelerator: What's that have to do with poker?

singlebottle.gif

My favorite “tell” I pick up on other poker players is shaking hands.

If they’re quivering when they throw their chips into the pot, they’re on an adrenaline rush, and a hand so big their body can’t control it.

Knowing that saves me money; I fold.

Unfortunately, I have the same tell myself.

That’s why I tried what is called an “oxytocin accelerator,” a homeopathic spray that is meant to put you more at ease. Oxytocin is a natural hormone from our pituitary gland; it’s what overcomes that feeling of panic.

HBC Protocols sent me a sample, and I tried it during a recent All-in Free Poker tournament at the Isle Casino and Racing. I sprayed a little in my mouth and sat down to play.

Now, poker is a game with unending variables: different cards, different players each time you sit down.

I can’t say I was any more or less calmer, and, well, I didn’t get enough big hands to accurately measure.

But with my chip count dwindling, I got ace-king in late position and called an early raiser.

When the flop came up three low cards, I fired all in. The early raiser, a tight player, called. And turned over pocket kings.

The turn and the river were no help to me and I went home, with an early night.

The spray may or may not have helped my nerves. The problem is, there’s no spray to prevent stupidity.

Dania tries new jai-alai scoring system

Dania Jai-Alai announced that it will introduce a new scoring system, called “Progressive 9” to be used in the nine point Superfecta games, according to a release from the fronton.

Adapted somewhat from the “Spectacular 7” scoring where points double after the first round of play, the Progressive 9 scoring will have points double after the first round and then progress to triple after the second round (the 15th point in the game).

In addition, all playoffs will be at the triple point level, regardless at which stage of the game they occur.

Dania officials think this is a way to not only shorten the length of the 9-point games, but it, also, gives a chance for any team to come from far behind and win.

"You, as a bettor, will never be out of it and can still win from even if you have lost the first few points in the Progressive 9 scoring," said Marty Fleischman, assistant general manager of Dania Jai-Alai. "This should add even more excitement and shows we are looking for innovative ways to enhance this great sport."

The new scoring will begin Wednesday and only on the ninth game. Fleischman said shortly thereafter, they plan to use it on all four 9-point games, the fourth, seventh, ninth and 12th.

Isle goes for baseball-themed promotions

Playing off the overall theme of "baseball," The Isle Casino and Racing has the following events on deck for April:

The events:

At 3 p.m. on Friday, April 3, Players Club members swipe their card to receive an entry to a drawing. From 4 p.m. to 11 p.m., winners will be selected every 15 minutes for $500 cash. A grand prize of $10,000 cash will be awarded at midnight.

On Saturday, April 4, drawings start at noon and go to 11 p.m. for $500 in cash every 15 minutes. The grand prize of $10,000 will be awarded at midnight.

The casino's "All Star Weekend" continues at noon Sunday with winners selected every 15 minutes and the grand prize of $20,000 awarded at 8 p.m.

From now until April 2, card members may swipe for five bonus entries daily.

The casino also is holding a "Baseball Diamond" free slot tournament:

Players score a "single" for 0-39,999 points and win $5 in IslePlay.

They score a "double" of 40,000 -69,999 and rewards $25 in IslePlay.

A "triple" is 70,000 – 99,999 points and nets $50 in IslePlay.

A "home run" of 100,000+ credits wins $100 in IslePlay.

Top score wins $1,000 IslePlay.

Every Monday in April is what the casino calls "Free Play Monday." They say to root for the home team (my guess here is it's Florida Marlins, but they couldn't use that in the promotion/standard procedure) and if any of the following occur, players win:

$5 IslePlay if the temperature at gametime is 85 degrees or higher;

$10 IslePlay if the home team shuts out an opponent;

$50 IslePlay if the home team hits for a cycle (single, double, triple, and home run for any one player);

$100 IslePlay if the home team pitcher throws a no-hitter.

On Friday, April 17, drawings will be held every hour for the $30,000 Home Run Sweepstakes. At 6 p.m. and 7 p.m., ten $500 IslePlay winners will be selected. At 8 p.m., a winner will receive suite tickets to a local professional baseball game (again, my guess is Marlins). At 9 p.m, win a trip for two to New York for a game, airfare and hotel. At 10 p.m., the grand prize winner receives $10,000 in cash.

On Sunday, April 26, at 3 p.m., two $1,000 IslePlay winners will be selected. At 4 p.m., five $400 IslePlay winners; at 5 p.m. ten $100 winners; 6 p.m. a $5,000 winner and the grand prize winner wins a Buick LaCrosse at 7p.m.

On Thursday, April 30 at 7:30 pm. and Friday, May 1 at 8 p.m., the Isle holds the $20,000 Doubleheader Jackpot Sweepstakes. At each drawing, win a share of $10,000 cash. Entries from April 30 will stay in the drum for Friday, May 1.

Economics professor tells House what it wants to hear

satan.jpg

This from our Florida Politics blog:

The House just heard lengthy testimony from Earl Grinols, an anti-gambling economics professor at Baylor University in Texas.

Grinols told House members that casino gambling could cause crime to rise 5 to 8 percent in local communities, with an uptick in areas like burglary, larceny and even murder. And he said any gambling revenues would be offset by social costs in divorces, bankruptcies, suicides, etc.

Grinols told the committee he wasn’t paid for his testimony. That’s true, but he did get travel.

From House spokeswoman Jill Chamberlin: “We don’t have a contract and he’s not a paid consultant. We are paying his travel expenses (hotel, airfare) and he can submit a per diem voucher for meals, etc., just as a House employee outside of session would do.”

My questions, had I been there, are:

1.) Has he ever been to South Florida, and if so, what stats are there for here?

2.) Has he seen the Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling's numbers, which, while showing an increase in calls to the gambling hotline, has not been able to link them to more of the actions he mentions?

I put this post together on Friday, then our Michael Mayo comes out with his take on Sunday, complete with his own reference to Old Scratch, which I've added here.

And Sheldon Glass, who emails his local legislators -- and more, even Gov. Crist -- almost daily, commented:

Whatever happened to the lies when slots were being voted on four years ago about increased crime, prostitution and an increase in traffic jams around the casinos from the same Christian and Baptist coalitions?

None of this ever happened. Why are these people, who are always wrong and, and are only concerned about creating unconstitutional bigoted laws disguised in their view of family values, given any credibility whatsoever?

I've got a horror story for you: Four churches were built in my area in the last 6 years and the land taken off the tax rolls because of it.

My taxes went up because of the loss of revenue from this scam. So now I am paying higher taxes to make up the difference for property taken off the tax rolls to support their bigoted ideas and lies.

What do you all think? Agree or disagree?

Mike Mendez wins Le Batard poker at Dania Jai-Alai

dan%20and%20Mike%20Mendez.jpg

Mike Mendez of Weston was declared the winner of the Dan Le Batard Celebrity Poker Tournament held Wednesday night at Dania Jai-Alai.

The multi table Texas Hold’em tournament drew 250 Hold’em and 790 The Ticket fans paying $50 to enter.

According to a release from the fronton, with six players remaining as midnight approached, an agreement was reached to “chop” the pot equally giving each player just over $1,200. Mendez (at left, with Le Batard), being the chip leader, was awarded the tournament trophy. (Note to Marc Hochman, who comlained of 'No Love' in Action: Hi, Marc! and your picture has been in this space before.)

Dania Jai-Alai’s Cardroom is open Sundays through Thursdays from noon to midnight, Friday and Saturdays from noon to 2 a.m. The fronton is located at 301 E. Dania Beach Blvd in Dania Beach.

I had a decent night. I was down to 1200 chips early, and with blinds at 300-600 I jumped into a five-way pot with K-3 out of the big blind. Doubling up wouldn't have gotten it done. Cards turn up 4-5-6-7, so I hit the straight and have enough chips for awhile.

Then late, I'm at about 20,000 chips, blinds at 3,000-6,000. Get J-10 suited in the big blind; three callers, one an all-in. Flop comes Q-9-6, so two of us start to check it down. Third guy raises 10,000. So it's 26,000 in the pot (with antes) and I'm at 32 percent to hit my straight on turn or river. So I call, and call when he puts me all-in on the turn. He flips over A-6, so he has a pair of sixes and I have the open-ended straight draw and two overs! A 14-outer, which doesn't hit. And I go home.

Did I misplay it?

(FYI, to Isle poker players: I'll have all the Battle at the Beach results together, including the win by Hayden Fortini, as soon as I get them all; I just got a little behind.)

No-limit (real no-limit!) poker would change everything

Buried beneath the talk of blackjack, roulette and compacts, are two words, magic words in the Florida Senate's gambling proposal: No limit.

It's two words that mean the world to the best poker players, but if you're not a regular, it doesn't mean squat.

So let me explain.

We play what is called "no-limit" Texas Hold 'em at poker rooms here. But that's a false title. There's a $100 limit buy-in. That means the largest bet you can make is $100, unless you win a hand or two. Just compare that to slots, horses and the Lottery, where you can spend as much as you want whenever you want, and you see that it's an arbitrary rule, written in by the state on July 1, 2007, presumably to "protect us."

Now, look at what the Senate is offering not just the Seminoles, but every pari-mutuel in the state: "No-limit poker."

Think of it this way: If you play for nickels at home, you likely call your opponent on every hand. If you were playing for, say, $20, you'd stop and think. Extrapolate the economics and apply to no-limit.

Real poker players, the ones with money (not me!), know the difference. That's why they never come to Florida to play and prefer to play elsewhere. When a player has to call with flush draw when his opponent likely has a pair, and it costs only $100, well, he's often "priced in." Now, make that same decision with $5,000 out there...

"No-limit should be just that. No limit," says poker pro Clonie Gowen, who on her recent visit said she wouldn't play the current $100 buy-in game because, essentially, it's not really poker.

Adds Jon Marks of Weston, a regular player who rolls numbers around in his head so much that he's part man, part abacus: "The current game just becomes an all-in Yahtzeefest."

I put out some emails for comments to poker players who know more than me. Here we go:

Chris Costenza, co-publisher of AnteUp Magazine, which covers the state: "We were placated by the no-limit concession back in 2007, thinking it would give us a chance to ply our poker skill. But in the end it was merely a mirage that turned the game into a lottery. A true no-limit
poker game where bets can be crafted to separate the chaff from the wheat has endless possibilities. Real poker players, with real money, will find their way to Florida now, and we'll benefit from the influx of gambling dollars from around the country."

Marks notes that at the Bogota the $5-$10 game is a $500 minimum buy in with a $2,500
max. The $2-$5 is a $300 minimum with a $1,500 max. You can buy in as often as you want so the upper limit is more of a guideline.

Wil Herrera, manager of Mardi Gras Poker Room, says in some ways, players lose more at $100 buy-in, than if it were, say, $500. Players push all-in for $100 a few times, then re-buy when they lose.

"He’s not going to push all in every hand if it's $500," Herrera said. "You see peple lose $1,000 by losing $100 at a time.

An increase to no-limit would bring big tournaments here, he said, because players come not only for the tournament, but for the side action cash games afterward.

"Poker would explode down here," he said. "For the player who travels across the country, the tournament is part of it, but the main part of it is the side action."

So, my point is that even if they didn't go all the way with no-limit, maybe they'll bump it up to say, $500 or $1,000 buy-in.

Meanwhile, tell me. Would any of this affect your poker habits?

Blackjack to South Florida racinos, Senate suggests

Eager to raise money to balance the state budget, the Senate has a plan. Give the Seminoles craps and roulette. Give South Florida parimutuels blackjack. Give the other parimutuels video-lottery terminals.

Their suggestion is as far to one side as the House's proposal is to the other. (No blackjack, even for Seminoles.)

So, here's the question of the day: If your local pari got blackjack, would you hit that spot more?

What if there were a $10-a-hand-limit?

And if you're pro-pari right now, would you have a problem with the Seminoles' addition of craps and roulette?

Problem gambling: Florida colleges get a plan

The Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling today announced measures to identify college problem gamblers and quickly get them help.

"By the time the problem is recognized, they have already put their education and future on the line," council executive director Pat Fowler said.

The University of South Florida recently studied 2,300 students at seven Florida campuses and learned 5 percent were problem gamblers, four times the rate of the general adult population in Florida. The university followed the American Psychiatric Association's definition of pathological gambling, which is "persistent and recurrent maladaptive gambling behavior."

The most popular form of gambling for college students is poker.

"Many students play on free internet sites where they are bolstered by winning, only to find themselves in over their heads when they begin playing on sites for money," Fowler said. "With free time and plentiful computer access on campus, students, especially males, may find themselves spending hours playing at online sites instead of in class or doing class work."

The program, called Students Against Gambling Addiction, is being implemented at Florida colleges, Fowler said. Recommendations include techniques to help adults and residence hall counselors recognize problem gamblers, a greater presence for the state's gambling hotline and a suggestion that universities not sanction on-campus gambling activities such as poker tournaments and casino nights.

In order to ensure that each college would cooperate, the study purposely didn't break down the numbers down by institution, Fowler said. (Which I agree with: You could imagine one school using the data against another for recruitment.)

'Sopranos' cast members highlight Coconut Creek 'Wise Guy Weekend'

Steve%20Schirripa.jpg

Five former cast members of the HBO show The Sopranos will be on hand to meet fans and sign autographs on from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek.

The appearance is part of the casino’s “Wise Guy Weekend.” They are: Steve Schirripa (Bobby “Bakala” Baccalieri); Vincent Pastore (Sal “Big P” Bonpensiero); Vincent Curatola (Johnny “Sack” Sacramoni); John “Cha Cha” Ciarcia (Albie Cianflone); and Frederico Casteluccio (Furio Giunta).

The cast members’ appearance highlights the conclusion of Seminole Casino Coconut Creek’s “Great Coco Escape” month featuring the finale of the casino’s “Break the Bank” promotion, according to a casino press release.

The promotion takes place every hour from 1-5 p.m. Saturday. Players Club Members can earn entry into the promotion drawing by swiping their Player’s Club Card for a chance to select a bag of money from the “Bank of Seminole Casino Coconut Creek.”

Players have a one-in-five chance of winning up to $50,000, according to Marketing Director Michael Michaud.

The “Break the Bank” promotion uses an extravagant set as the casino created the “Bank of Seminole Casino Coconut Creek” for the promotion. Designed by Southern Studios in North Miami Beach, the “Bank of Seminole Casino Coconut Creek” features an 8-foot hole in the exterior of the wall appearing as if “wise guys” blasted their way into the vault.

“It’s turning into an overnight attraction,” General Manager Steve Bonner said. There's a dramatic sight complete with search lights and sirens, the casino says.

Vanessa Rousso compares "The Art of War" with "The Art of Poker"

Vanessa Rousso appeared at the Isle Casino and Racing Monday morning, before playing in the Battle at the Beach $900 deep-stack poker tournament.

Rousso is in town promoting her Big Slick boot camp: It's $399 and is April 5 at the Isle, April 11 at Orange Park and April 26 at Palm Beach Kennel.

The gist: She read Sun Tzu's The Art of War -- and re-read it and re-read it -- and says it applies to poker.

For example: The line, roughly about knowing yourself and you'll win some of the time; know your opponent and you'll win some of the time. Know yourself and know your opponent, and that's where the big payoff comes.

We shot some video of her talking about it, and will have it up on Tuesday. She posed for photos with the All in Free Poker gang and Mike Smith, the Isle's prominent poker room manager.

As of 3:15 p.m., she's still alive in the tournament, which began at 12:30 p.m. It's Day 1B of the tournament; 41 survived Day 1A and will return Tuesday. Chip leader: Hayden Fortini, with 180,500 chips. Maurice Hawkins lurks in eighth with 118,000.

1.) Players sign up for their "Play Your Way" card, which logs players non-tournament time.
2.) For each 10 hours spent playing in April, the fronton gives you a drawing entry.
3.) The fronton will draw a name for the trip.

The compact: What do you think is fair?

The Florida House had hinted at its plans, and now they're looking more solid: They're saying no blackjack in their version of gambling legislation. It'll go through by Wednesday, they say.

But it's only half of the legislature. The Senate is still looking at not only keeping gambling as it is in the state, but actually expanding it.

I've been saying that this whole thing is a multi-variable equation, with the governor vs. the Legislature vs. the Seminoles vs. the parimutuels. And I have no idea what's right. I don't even know what is fair.

So, for one minute put aside your already-cemented opinions and look at it from the other guy's side.

And send me the response to this question: "What do you think is fair?"

How much is $5 million? In 1819 it bought Florida from Spain

Photo gallery at http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/sfl-5-million-pg,0,4056242.photogallery

With security guards, bikini models, fireworks and a Beatles act, the Seminole Tribe of Florida today unveiled more money than has ever been on display at a casino.

The $5 Million Cash Tour made its debut at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino just before noon Wednesday. It's 50,000 $100 bills, neatly stacked and kept in a $90,000 1,300-pound shatterproof case.

About 500 gathered for the opening, including local gamblers, 13 members of the Port St. Lucie Red Hat Society and at least one man applying for a job.

"I got here at 9 a.m., turned in my application and decided to wait around," said George West of Fort Lauderdale, who wants to be a dealer. "There's girls, music and $5 million.

"What else would you want?"

Casino visitors can have their photos taken in front of the cash, provided they are Players' Club members (which takes about a minute to sign up for). A similar promotion at Binion's in Las Vegas, with $1 million, was a regular feature at the casino for 1964 to 2000 and recently has been reinstated.

Wednesday, friends Bob Knapstein and Tom Racaniello of Pompano Beach were first in line for photos. They had been playing blackjack.

"We were ready to go, but thought we'd do this," said Knapstein. The photo display is open from noon until 10 p.m.

The morning started with three songs from the Beatles band playing at the show Beatlemania Live! at the Hard Rock Live through March 29.

Their final song, of course, was Money.

cashpiles.jpg

Meanwhile, the Seminoles could give $1 million of it back daily. During each day of its promotion, the Tribe will download a $1 million prize onto one Players' Club member's card. If the person swipes his or her card on the day the money is downloaded, they win the cash. The Seminoles don't release how many Players' Club members they have but confirm it is in the tens of thousands.

More than 50 people were lined up at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, 30 minutes before the promotion's start. Consolation prizes include free play and $15 discounts at restaurants.

Among those interested in the display were two mother-daughter pairs on a two-day trip from LaCrosse, Wis.: (Moms listed first) Teri and Kaylene Juan and Patty and Sierra Fellows.

"It'd be even cooler if they had a high-powered gun that shot the money right at us," Teri said. They are not casino regulars.

By the way, what's $5 million?

It's the amount paid to Spain in 1819 to buy the state of Florida. It's less than 20 percent of the salary being paid to the New York Yankees' Alex Rodriguez, and it's about 2.5 percent of the annual payments the Seminole Tribe of Florida would be making were its compact with the state of Florida be in effect.

The tour dates: Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino: through Friday and May 8-16; Immokalee: March 23-29; Brighton: April 6-8; Coconut Creek: April 14-19; Hollywood “Classic”: April 23-26; Hard Rock Tampa May 18-25.

Casinos offer St. Patrick's Day promotions

Most gamblers have some kind of lucky tradition -- quirky card-cappers for poker and lucky hats and shirts for slots -- so St. Patrick's Day and the concept of luck is a natural hook for casinos.

South Florida gambling sites are varied in their promotions:

86-year-old Coconut Creek man wins $1 million in lottery

An 86-year-old Coconut Creek man claimed a $1 million prize at Florida Lottery headquarters Monday morning, according to the lottery.

The man, Murray Eisenberg, purchased his winning ticket from Publix, located at 4760 W. Hillsboro Blvd. in Coconut Creek.

Eisenberg won in the Billion Dollar Blockbuster Scratch Off. Joanna Raulerson, 52, of Fruitland Park, also won. It's the second and third Lottery players to claim a $1 million prize in the recently launched Scratch-Off game, which costs $20 per ticket.

Lottery officials described Eisenberg as a "very private" person. By state law, lottery winners' names are public, and the Lottery e-mails a mass-media release after each winner to let the public know when a prize has been awarded, officials said.

Eisenberg chose a $650,000 one-time lump-sum payment rather than $50,000 a year for 20 years.

Gambling, Seminoles and Tallahassee: Compact debate heats up

I. Nelson Rose, who has made our Gambling pages with advice on gambling and the law, now speaks up about the Seminole Casinos, according to a post by our Josh Hafenbrack.

He writes that Rose's 31-page opinion, dated March 9, has been distributed to members of a House select committee planning to release a rewrite of the compact -- minus blackjack and baccarat -- as early as next week.

While federal law prevents state authorities from going on tribal land to enforce anti-gambling laws, Nelson wrote, Florida has "lots of ways to deal with individuals who are involved with illegal gambling, even if the actual operation cannot be raided."

'Massage therapists' remove gambler's pants, take cash

According to Yahoo News, police said a man was robbed of his casino winnings by two women he met at the casino and invited home with him in Tulsa, Okla.

The man won about $2,000 at the Creek Nation Casino and then invited the women to gamble with him and go home with him for drinks about 4 a.m. Monday, police said. The man told the officer the women said they were massage therapists and removed his pants then left with his cash.

About 4:45 a.m. the officer was at a nearby convenience store and recognized the two suspects from the victim's description.

Police arrested two 21-year-old women after finding them carrying a large amount of cash then finding marijuana in their car.

Help the economy; go to a Vegas convention?

Talk about the fox guarding the hen house ...

“For the 62 percent of Americans who have attended an out-of-town meeting or convention for work, 87 percent say it is important to running a strong business.”

So, of all the people who went away on a convention, the vast majority agree that ... well, the convention was worth going to. How about that!

And the results were released by ... the American Gaming Association (AGA).

The release says the findings "indicate that the vast majority of America’s business travelers think such trips are crucial to the health of their employers."

Clearly, Las Vegas is being hit by business belt-tightening, and fewer conventions. (Local casinos, like we have, are hurt less because they are not "destination" casinos.) But with people being laid off, stocks dropping and those who are still employed facing pay freezes -- if they're lucky -- it doesn't exactly strike me as the right time to argue (and so blatantly) for conventions to hit Vegas.

Wellington poker player in SI swimsuit issue second in Heads-Up tourney

Vanessa.jpg

It turns out Vanessa Rousso, the Wellington High graduate profiled in the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, can play a little poker, too.

Rousso finished second this weekend in the National Heads-Up Poker Championship, defeating Doyle Brunson, Phil Ivey, Paul Wasicka, Daniel Negreanu and Bertrand Grospellier to reach the final.

She lost to Huck Seed on Sunday in the final of the 64-player event, modeled like an NCAA basketball tourney. The heads-up events were one game only, other than the final, which was best-of-three.

The tournament is taped for broadcast on NBC over six consecutive Sundays beginning April 12.

Rousso made news earlier this year when she appeared in a two-page "custom content" (advertorial) in Sports Illustrated.

Seed won $500,000.

"This has always been one of my favorite tournaments of the year," said Seed, who has participated and finished in the money in every Heads-Up event, according to a press release. "I’ve played well in the past, but things especially went my way this weekend and I was able to make a run all the way to the top."

Seed reached the final table by defeating Jonathan Little, Gus Hansen, Glen Chorny David Oppenheim and Sam Farha, while Rousso ended up in the last pairing by taking down poker heavyweights Doyle Brunson, Phil Ivey, Paul Wasicka, Daniel Negreanu and Bertrand Grospellier along the way. Seed took the first two matches of the best-of-three final, as his off-suit king/seven in the final hand was enough to claim the title.

With her runner-up finish, Rousso, who was recently signed as the newest GoDaddy.com spokesperson, completed the best run for a woman competitor in a Heads-Up tournament. Shannon Elizabeth reached the semi-finals in 2007.

The celebrity participants, led by Don Cheadle and Brad Garrett, once again made some noise. Garrett advanced to the second round by defeating poker pro and Celebrity Apprentice star Annie Duke, while Don Cheadle reached day two of the tournament with a win over David Pham.

The single-elimination competition began Friday morning and ended Sunday. The tournament was presented by GoDaddy.com at the Caesars Palace Poker Tournament Room in Las Vegas.

Slingo slot machine comes to South Florida and the Isle

slingo.jpg

Slingo, already a known name among gamblers, now has a slot machine.

The Isle Casino and Racing in Pompano Beach reports hot action at the game.

One criticism: They have only three games.

Isle GM Michael Bloom says they "don't want to dilute the value" of the game. I take that to mean that if they have a bunch of them, then there would be less interest.

Somehow, though, I think of the line in the baseball book Ball Four, when Jim Bouton asks the trainer why they don't have more milk. The response: "If I brought in more milk, you guys would just drink it all."

Poker writer to conduct seminar

John Bond of Dania Beach, author of several books, is conducting a seminar on poker and crime fiction writing from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Kings Head Pub in Dania Beach.

It's a fundraiser for FIU's Gulfstream literary magazine. Cost is $25 for students; $35 for non students. All proceeds go to the magazine.

To register, email GULFSTREAMFIU@yahoo.com to register or just show up, Bond says.

Bond's most recent book is The Home Poker Handbook ($14.95, ConJelCo publishing). Bond has co-written a poker column for Card Player magazine for 16 years and is a regular at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino games.

I could write about what a character he is, but you all taking the class would do a better job than I would.

Blackjack costs and three cards to 16

bjackImmo.jpg

John Brokopp of The Casino City Times writes about "pay to play" blackjack. That is, paying to reserve a seat so you don't have to wander around the casino. It hits Aurora, Ill., this week.

Meanwhile, catching up with Brokopp from last month, he writes that players who take a card to get to 16 should stick, and he consulted the bible of all bibles: www.wizardofodds.com and Michael Shackelford.

I don't think I'd pay $20 for a blackjack seat; I'd probably just go have a beer instead.
The 16 thing, now, that confuses me.

Any thoughts out there?

Second update: Gulfstream's parent company, Magna, files for bankruptcy

Magna Entertainment Corp., which owns Gulfstream Park Racing & Casino, sought bankruptcy protection after defaulting under a loan agreement and said it plans to sell assets.

Bloomberg said the Canadian company, controlled by Frank Stronach, chairman of auto-parts supplier Magna International Inc., today listed assets of more than $1 billion and debt of $958.6 million as of Dec. 31 in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Wilmington, Delaware. Magna owes about $500 million under secured financing agreements and about $225 million under unsecured notes, court papers show.

Some Gulfstream employees report they were paid Wednesday, two days ahead of their regular Friday payday. Maryland Jockey Club employees were paid Wednesday, too, The Baltimore Sun says, and the Los Angeles Daily News reported that Magna employees had been told to turn in their timecards last Monday and were scheduled to be paid early.

What does this all mean for Gulfstream? Well, just because a parent company declares bankruptcy, that doesn't mean everything grinds to a halt. (I know this one personally.)

Gulfstream president Bill Murphy said he told employees Thursday that the track and casino would not be affected.

"Their jobs and benefits will not be affected," he said, noting that there are no planned layoffs.

"It will be business as usual, we're having a great year and we're looking forward to a great Florida Derby," he said. "Our revenues are up compared to last year and we had our biggest poker day ever on Saturday, only to break it again on Sunday."

David Roberts, the state's director of pari-mutuel wagering, said if Gulfstream is sold, the state will have to approve the gambling licenses for the new owner.

The first phase of The Village at Gulfstream, consisting of 32 shops, restaurants and nightclubs and costing $245 million, is set to open Feb. 11, 2010, Forest City's Brian Ratner said. Last week, he said Forest City's lease with any new owner would still be good. Ratner said 85 percent of the project is built.

The project has been planned for eight years and at one time had completion dates of 2007, 2008 and 2009.

But just in case, I would always cash my winning horse racing and slot tickets immediately. No sense risking seeing any court getting ahold of your cash.

Isle slot player is first to win car

Car_give_away0228x.jpg

Elizabeth Dittmar became the first person to hit the car jackpot at the Isle.

The casino began the "Burning Wheels Mystery Jackpot" in late January. The idea is that players sit at bank of slot machines and randomly a person wins a car.

Dittmar (pictured with Isle slots director Bill Crafts and special events coordinator Jennifer Stanton) hit it on Feb. 22.

The car was a Pontiac Solstice. She took the cash option of $27,325, the casino said.

She said she'll use it to help pay for her grandson's private school education.

Players sit at a bank of $1 machines, wagering $1, $2 or $3 per spin. The car is set on a mystery progressive controller that links all of the machines and tracks the amount of coins bet.

The "mystery controller" selects a random number between the starting value and max value. A coin will push the jackpot pool to the exact mystery amount and the person putting that coin in the machine wins the car.

The casino sets a starting value of 1,200 (like on a progressive slot machine) and a maximum value of 15,000. The mystery controller selects a random number between the starting value and the max value.

Her disease is called Spinal Muscular Atrophy. She cannot bear any weight on her legs, cannot lift her head when laying down, cannot even take deep breaths while sleeping.

But despite all that, Madison Cay Smith is a happy smiling, 2-year-old, her parents say.

What does that have to do with poker?

Well, Friday night friends are conducing a charity poker tournament to raise money for her medical needs. She needs respiratory therapy, physical therapy, water therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. She is on a special amino acid medical food formula for easier digestion and to support her intestinal tract, in addition to a strict vegan diet.

The tournament is at 7 p.m. Friday at HIllcrest Country Club, 4600 Hillcrest Drive, Hollywood. Buy-in is $150 and top prize is an entry into a World Series of Poker event. Call 954-444-5937.

The Pembroke Pines family spends more than $2,100 a month for treatment; funds raised will go to help pay those bills.
