Isle has baseball-themed slot tournaments

The Isle Casino and Racing in Pompano Beach has set the following promotions for May:

From now until May 30, you can guess how many baseballs are in the casino's front entrance display. The person with the closest guess, without going over, wins $5,000 cash. Former Yankee Stan Bahnsen will sign autographs after the grand prize is announced.

On Mondays, the casino continues its "Root for the Home Team" promotion (they can't use the word "Marlins"). Players get:

$5 free play if the temperature at game time is 85 degrees or higher;
$10 if the home team shuts out an opponent;
$50 if the home team hits for a cycle (single, double, triple, and home run for any one player);
$100 if the home team pitcher throws a no-hitter.

On Saturday, May 2, is the Kentucky Derby Sweepstakes from noon-
5 p.m. The casino gives you a randomly generated number corresponding to a racehorse. If your number is the winning Derby horse, you get $100 in free play.

On Saturday, May 16, is the $1,000,000 Preakness Sweepstakes from noon - 6 p.m. Three winners will compete every hour for up to $1 million in prizes.

On Saturday, May 23,
is a Memorial Day big band party, starring the 18-piece Ben Grisafi Orchestra from 7:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. and a fireworks show at 9 p.m. outside the casino’s Trackside bar.

On Sunday, May 24, win a Pontiac Solstice and a share of $10,000 in IslePlay. Drawings are at the top of every hour from 2 p.m. – 6 p.m. with the Pontiac winner selected at 6 p.m.

On Monday, June 1 at 7:30 p.m., the Isle holds the $10,000 Jackpot Sweepstakes. Win a share of $10,000 cash. Earn entries in May when you win any hand-paid jackpot.

About the author
Maybe you've made the right play, maybe you haven't. Your heart speeds up, your stomach rumbles.

That's why it's called gambling.

ACTION is a view of the numbers, the psychology and the flavor of gambling here in South Florida, through our lens.

We do have one sure bet. There's something here for you.

NICK SORTAL began playing 3-card "gut" and "Indian poker" on high school band trips, moved on to "night baseball" and "pass the trash" during a Dr. Pepper-infused midnight game in the 1980s at the St. Louis Globe-Democrat, and now play in a regular neighborhood Hold 'Em game in Plantation. I have been given the assignment of writing about the gambling life in South Florida casinos for the Sun-Sentinel...which means sitting around watching poker on TV now counts as research.
