Kelly Elliott of Lake Worth prevailed in the High Heels Poker Tournament at Dania Jai-Alai on Sept. 12. She took home $1,120.
Next in line: Patty Hederson, Fort Lauderdale, ($700), Robin Deeter, Daytona Beach ($550), Peggy Penning, Miami ($440); Karen Hudson, Davie ($375), Stephanie Streeter, Hallandale Beach, ($315).
Meanwhile, the tour hits the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 2. Buy-in is $200.
Then on Oct. 10, the tour is participating in the "Battle of the Sexes" to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
The buy-in for the 4 p.m. event at Tampa Bay Downs is $100 with $20 rebuys and an unconditional optional $50 add-on offered at the end of third round.
The event will have the women and men playing separately until they get down to the final five women and five men to make a final table.
"We are proud to be able to find a unique competition to include everyone since breast cancer is not a gender specific disease," the release says. Cool.
NICK SORTAL began playing 3-card "gut" and "Indian poker" on high school band trips, moved on to "night baseball" and "pass the trash" during a Dr. Pepper-infused midnight game in the 1980s at the St. Louis Globe-Democrat, and now play in a regular neighborhood Hold 'Em game in Plantation. I have been given the assignment of writing about the gambling life in South Florida casinos for the Sun-Sentinel...which means sitting around watching poker on TV now counts as research.
