Poker player wins Harley in Gulfstream Challenge
Rob DiGiacomo outlasted a field of 50 competitors to claim the Harley Davidson ~ Sports Legends Challenge at Gulfstream Park Sept. 4.
DiGiacomo claimed a 2009 Harley Davidson Fat Boy motorcycle and more than $13,000 in cash. Runner-up Fred Attias received $6,500, and Khampetch Seignarack got.$3,900 for third.
Diane Devereaux was the top female finisher, eliminated in eighth place and receiving $1,251.
For the past year, Gulfstream has conducted "poker seasons" and keeps a leaderboard. The top 50 point earners from tournaments over a couple of months then sit down to play for free for big prizes, such as the Harley.
Gulfstream Park will begin its second Annual Mercedes Challenge on Oct. 1.
NICK SORTAL began playing 3-card "gut" and "Indian poker" on high school band trips, moved on to "night baseball" and "pass the trash" during a Dr. Pepper-infused midnight game in the 1980s at the St. Louis Globe-Democrat, and now play in a regular neighborhood Hold 'Em game in Plantation. I have been given the assignment of writing about the gambling life in South Florida casinos for the Sun-Sentinel...which means sitting around watching poker on TV now counts as research.
