Hollywood woman wins Le Batard tournament
Cathy Abbott of Hollywood took the winner’s trophy Wednesday night in the Dan Le Batard Celebrity Poker Tournament at Dania Jai-Alai.
The tournament drew over 200 poker players despite game one of the World Series and the Miami Heat opener. Buy-in was $50.
The final four players decided to “chop” the pot equally giving each player $1,381. Abbott (pictured with 790 The Ticket's Mike Ryan -- congrats on making the blog) was the chip leader and was awarded the tournament trophy.
By my stats, it's the first Le Batard female winner in the history of the tournament, which is about a year old. I think she's a regular at Dania, but I am not sure. Anyone know?
Dania Jai-Alai’s cardroom is open Sundays through Thursdays from noon to midnight, Friday and Saturdays from noon to 2 a.m. The fronton is located at 301 E. Dania Beach Blvd in Dania Beach.
NICK SORTAL began playing 3-card "gut" and "Indian poker" on high school band trips, moved on to "night baseball" and "pass the trash" during a Dr. Pepper-infused midnight game in the 1980s at the St. Louis Globe-Democrat, and now play in a regular neighborhood Hold 'Em game in Plantation. I have been given the assignment of writing about the gambling life in South Florida casinos for the Sun-Sentinel...which means sitting around watching poker on TV now counts as research.
