We are so due for a big Lottery win.
Powerball, the game played in 41 states, D.C. and the Virgin Islands, is up to $150 million, the highest it has been since March 13, when it hit for $211 million in New Jersey. We haven't had a Florida winner since Oct. 3, when Orlando's Dr. William Steele hit for $189 million. In fact, Dr. Steele is the only Florida top jackpot winner ever; the state picked up Powerball in January 2009.
The Florida Lotto, our state game, is expected to be near $46 million by Saturday night. There has been no winner since Feb. 3.
South Florida had a hot streak last fall, but hasn't made news since January, when Margaret Palomino, 66, of West Park, claimed a $28 million Florida Lotto jackpot -- from a ticket drawn on Nov. 7, 2009. And on Jan. 2, 2010, Joyce Levitt of Pembroke Pines hit for "only" $7 million. So, we're not officially zero-for-2010 in South Florida, but things have been dry.
Webcasts of Florida Lottery drawings are available on the Lottery's Web site at flalottery.com. You may also sign up for SMS text alerts of the winning numbers by sending the keyword LOTTO to 23539.
The drawings are Saturday night. So, if you walk in Monday to work, log on, and don't see any new posts on this here blog, you'll know...
