Remember the scene in the movie Bruce Almighty, where Jim Carrey helps everyone win the lottery, then they're all livid when they find out they got only a few bucks?
Well, Monday night, 47 people hit the Fantasy 5, Florida Lottery officials said. Here are the venues that sold the winning tickets.
So that meant a low payout. In this case, $4,581. That's a far cry from the day before, when it paid more than $95,000.
The winning numbers: 14-15-16-17-18. (No wonder!)
All but one of those were hand-selected, according to Gary Taylor, Mr. Lucky blogger.
But while 47 winners is certainly an anomaly, go back to the Powerball drawing of March 30, 2005, which produced a record 110 second-prize winners, each with the five correct white balls, missing only the Powerball. (They won either $100,000 or $500,000, depending on whether they took the Power Play option.)
Powerball officials checked for fraud, but there was a good reason for so many winners: all 110 got their numbers in fortune cookies produced in New York.
This is the most number of Fantasy 5 winners since 2001 when the Fantasy 5 numbers increased to 36 from 26, making it more difficult to win. In 2005, 40 people hit the Fantasy 5 with the 36-number format. The all-time Fantasy 5 record came in in June 1993 with 204 winning tickets.
By the way, here's my alternative headline today: "Lottery hits in Miami; and in Coconut Creek, Oakland Park, Lauderdale Lakes, Pompano Beach, Pembroke Pines, Lauderhill..."
