Dania debuts new sky box, wear Gator garb and get free pitcher of beer

The new "Gator Skybox" makes its debut Saturday at Dania Jai-Alai, in time for the Tennessee game.

Wear a UF Gator shirt or show your Dade-Broward Gator Club card and get a free pitcher of beer. (As bad as Tennessee's offense, you could play a drinking game: chug after every Vol first down. You'll still have beer left over.) You also could get in some jai-alai bets, horse simulcast wagers or play poker.

The skybox has a 110-inch screen, prize drawings and barbecue from Scruby's (the place that has so many coupons in Showtime each week that my brother-in-law can eat there and almost turn a profit).

Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m.

Forget "Lucky 7," casino giveaways play off of 9-9-09

Slot machines traditionally employ the number seven to symbolize good fortune, but four casinos are betting on nine.

They have promotions Wednesday, Sept. 9. (9-9-09).

They are:

The Seminole Casino Hollywood will give away $999 in free play every nine minutes from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Players can earn additional entries by earning 500 points in slot play daily.

The Isle Casino & Racing in Pompano Beach is giving away $99 in free play every nine minutes between noon and 9 p.m For the finale at 9 p.m., nine people will be chosen to win up to $999,999 in the 9-9-9 sweepstakes.

The Seminole Casino Coconut Creek will give away $999 in cash every half hour from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The Seminole Hard Rock in Tampa has a 9 million point giveaway. At 7, 8 and 9 p.m. three players' names will be drawn to receive 1 million points on their Players' Club card.

What's the big deal about 9-9-09? A Yahoo article tells about the math (remember "casting out nines" in elementary school), culture and numerology.

My thought? I just think it looks kind of cool.

Yup, a free concert by rapper Vanilla Ice of Ice, Ice Baby.

There's also a classic car show and Cosmic Bingo on Sunday and two $50,000 cash giveaways on Labor Day. Also a skating rink will be erected for free skating all weekend long.

8 p.m. to 9:15 p.m.: Free Vanilla Ice Concert (I am starting a rumor that GM Steve Bonner will make a guest appearance on stage, wearing rock-star duds. It's not true, but it would be cool if it were.)

10 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Entertainment all day

10 a.m. to 4 p.m.: World’s largest free mojito tank

5 p.m. to 10 p.m.: $50,000 “Beat The Heat” Slot Tournament (drawings every hour)

The release says: "Laid back in comparison to its sister property, the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, just across the street, Seminole Casino Hollywood actually pioneered Indian gaming when it opened as the country’s first large stakes bingo hall in 1979, eventually expanding with gaming machines and poker." (Just a gentle, friendly reminder: Seminole casinos allow smoking, so dress accordingly.)

Former Met Ed Kranepool and Yankee pitcher Stan Bahnsen will sign free autographs at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Kranepool signed with the Mets at age 17 and debuted for them in 1962, eventually becoming a fan favorite and member of the World Series “Miracle Mets” in 1969. He played all of his 18 seasons (1,853 games) for the team, longer than any other player in their history.

He was inducted into the New York Mets Hall of Fame in 1990 and still leads the team records for 5,436 at-bats, 1,418 hits, 225 doubles, and 2,047 total bases.

Free jai-alai clinics for children 10 through 16 at Dania this weekend

Dania Jai-Alai is teaching the game to young people the next two weekends.

The fronton will host free clinics from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday and again on Aug. 22-23. It's for children 10 through 16.

Benny Bueno, the fronton's new Player Development Manager, will give a tour of the court, go over the rules and teach them how to throw and catch the ball. (They'll us a rubber one, which isn't nearly as painful as the regular pelota.)

“It's a dream for me… giving back to the sport that gave me so much,” said Bueno, a former professional palyer. He would like to set up youth jai-alai programs at area schools -- but I don't think he'll be explaining how to bet a trifecta, box the favorites in a perfecta or explain what it's like to be out there playing and hearing a patron betting against you yell "DROP IT, FIVE!"

Parents are urged to sign up their kids early online at www.dania-jai-alai.com/clinic or can register when they arrive.

The Isle Casino Pompano Park shuffled its poker schedule this week, adding two inexpensive multi-table tournaments.

“We’re just trying something new, and we think there are players interested,” said Mike Smith, the Isle’s director of poker operations.

The new $40 tournament is 2 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays. Players start with 1,500 chips, and can add another 1,000 for $10 more. The first tournament was Wednesday and drew 22 entrants.

Meanwhile, the $40 one-table “turbo” tournaments, which the Isle started about three months ago, have been “very, very popular,” Smith said. These take about an hour to play.

The Isle also has tournaments with higher buy-ins, including a $440 event set for Aug. 17 and the Isle Open Deepstacks events from Sept. 28 to Oct. 6, with a main event entry of $900.
More poker players are registering in advance online, Smith said.

Casino fireworks, patriotic promotions and giveaways for July 3-4

There's nothing better than a Saturday July 4 holiday for casinos. That's because July 4 is usually a family night, everyone together watching fireworks. So some casinos can put events on July 3 -- and adults can justify sneaking away from the kids.

I wrote earlier about Seminole Coconut Creek Casino and Dania Jai-Alai, but here are some other promotions for the July 3-4 weekend. The gist: Two casinos are doing fireworks on the third, and one on the fourth.

Gulfstream Park offers a July 3 fireworks display, a $17.76 All-American buffet; live music and will give away three Jeeps.

The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino has a fireworks display at 9 p.m. Friday, as well as a laser show, strolling musicians and a DJ at Center Fountain. The casino will give away $1,776 every hour from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, then have $20,000 grand prize drawings at 7 p.m. each day. The poker room will have an Independence Day tournament at 11 a.m. Saturday. Entry is $575.

Mardi Gras will have fireworks at 9 p.m. Saturday and give away a 2010 Camaro at 10:30 p.m. Saturday. The casino also will have other giveaways and a barbecue.

Isle Casino and Racing will have an "Early Bird Sweepstakes" on Saturday, giving away $100 to 20 people starting at 11 a.m., then conduct a grand prize drawing of $500. The casino also will give away July 4 tote bags and offer up to five times its normal Players' Club points.

Seminole Classic casino in Hollywood will give away up to $500 in free play every 20 minutes from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday. If a patron is not present to collect the prize, it rolls into the next giveaway.

Enter July 4 hot-dog eating contest at Dania Jai-Alai

hotdogman.gif

If you a.) like hot dogs or b.) get rained out from fireworks on July 4, then Dania Jai-Alai has a feasible option.

The fronton is conducting a hot-dog eating contest, at about 8 p.m. on Saturday.

It works like this:

The fronton is taking 12 to 20 contests to eat hot dogs (and buns) for six minutes.

"Most of these contests go 20 minutes but we figure six minutes is enough," says Lou Berdellans, promotions and events coordinator at the fronton. The person who eats the most gets $250; second prize pays $100.

Berdellans has a couple of contestants lined up, but will put you up for the title if you bring at least 10 friends, he said.

"I want people who have cheering sections," he said. The event will be held when whatever jai-alai game going on at 8 p.m. ends. There will be two paramedics on duty, he notes.

Meanwhile, he also has some Dania-style giveaways to just anyone who walks in: TNT fireworks from the store down the road; two kitchen sink sundaes from Jaxson's; gift certificates to Grandpa's restaurant; four $25 gift cards and jai-alai memorabilia.

The fronton also will draw names to try to hit the jai-alai wall with a serve. Do it and you get $100. If you go to the sports card and memorabilia show from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, you get an extra drawing entry for every $20 you spend.

Flying ELVI touch down at Seminole Coconut Creek

Elvi%2520Team%2520Photo.jpg

Our casinos may not be Vegas-style, but our entertainment sure is inspired by Sin City.

The “Flying Elvi”, a 10-member skydiving team first featured in the 1992 movie, Honeymoon in Vegas will jump July 3 (unless the weatherman ignores our pleas to Don't Be Cruel) at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek.

They'll make a jump of 5,000 to 12,000 feet just before sunset to kick off the casino's Independence Day weekend.

The Las Vegas skydiver show includes smoke trails, pyrotechnic fireworks, and precision maneuvers. An over-the-top “Elvi” stage show will follow the sky dive, according to the casino.

154242__honeymoon_l.jpg

Free-falling for up to 9,500 feet at speeds ranging from 120 to 160 mph, the Flying ELVI -- dressed in complete Elvis Presley outfits -- are serious daredevils with an average of more than 2,000 jumps each. All of them are U.S. Parachute Association Pro rated; they also have Elvis' approval, according to their site.

Their business took off after the movie, when they called themselves "the Flying Elvises," since tweaking their name. I just remember Sarah Jessica Parker fawning to Nicolas Cage: "You jumped out of a plane for me!" Aww.

The Elvi in some ways are a continuation of GM Steve Bonner's air fetish: he's given away space flights, painted a target on the roof for space debris to fall on and had "Dinners in the Sky" promotions. Can't say the guy's feet are planted firmly on the ground...

Meanwhile, the casino will hold a barbeque from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. July 4; cost is $7.77.

Seminole Casino Coconut Creek is east of State Road 7 (U.S. 441) and north of Sample Road at 5550 NW 40th Street. Call 954-977-6700.

Nick Sortal's gambling: Great odds on Sunday car giveaway

cooper.jpg

If last week is any indication, the best chances of winning a Mini Cooper will be Sunday morning at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek.

The casino, as part of its "Car A Day in May" giveaway, is running inserts in newspapers. Last week was the Palm Beach Post; this week, they'll were in Thursday's SunSentinel.

One of the inserts is good for a new car; you go to the casino on Thursday, Friday or Saturday and check to see if you've won. But that means your odds are, say, 1 in 180,000 or so.

The real payoff then could come Sunday, "Second Chance Day." You bring back your drawing entry between 9 a.m. and noon and place the "second chance" portion in a barrel. Presuming no one won the car Thursday, Friday or Saturday, the casino will draw a second-chance name for the car.

Last week (the Palm Beach Post week), there were only 32 entrants for the noon drawing. For a guaranteed car.

It went to Virginia Aguero from Jupiter.

Meanwhile, the casino is also having the "Ultimate Player Million Dollar Summer," with $100,000 weekends scattered through the months.

So Saturday and Sunday they're giving away $1,000 every 15 minutes from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

One newspaper insert good for a Mini Cooper

2008-mini-cooper-corner.jpg

The Seminole Casino Coconut Creek has purchased newspaper inserts with bar codes in the left-hand corner, and the SunSentinel will stuff them in its Thursday papers. One of the inserts has a bar code good for a Mini Cooper.

You have from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday to hit the casino and check your SunSentinel insert. Prizes also include 10 $1,000 winners and 100 $100 winners.

Actually, the insert gives you two chances to win a Mini Cooper, the casino's Michael Michaud points out. That's because in the upper-right corner of each insert is a coupon for a "second-chance" drawing entry. Redeem the coupon, then throw the entry into the casino's barrel each following Sunday between 9 a.m. and the noon drawing time, when the casino will give away yet another car. (Personally, I like those odds; how many people are really going to be there on a Sunday morning?)

The inserts are part of Coconut Creek's "Car a Day in May" promotion.

The "car" comes crashing down at Seminole Classic

The Seminole Casino Hollywood held its “Crash for Cash” $40,000 Giveaway on April 30. The Seminole Cash Truck -- actually, made of a styrofoam-type substance -- dropped from high in the sky and 10 money bags were revealed. (Photos courtesy of Seminole Classic)

Seminole Casino Hollywood player Ludmila Kadar won her way during the promotion for a chance at cash and grabbed a cash bag from the truck worth $40,000.

The casino, and the tribe's casino in Coconut Creek are currently in the midst of a car giveaway, with poker players and bingo players also in the running for a Mini Cooper.

Seminole Coconut Creek has new angle to car giveaway

The Seminole Casino Coconut Creek is going to the press.

The casino has purchased newspaper inserts with bar codes in the left-hand corner, and The Palm Beach Post will include them May 14 and the SunSentinel will stuff them in its May 21 papers. Each day, one of the inserts has a bar code good for a Mini Cooper.

You have from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. May 14-16 to hit the casino and scan for the car with inserts from the Palm Beach Post. You have from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. May 21-23 to check your SunSentinel insert.

The promotion is part of Coconut Creek's "Car a Day in May" promotion.

I want to see newspapers do well, so I'll let Michaud say it:

"Somebody has the potential to win a car if they buy the paper on Thursday," he said.

Seminole casinos have Mini Cooper giveaways in May

The Seminole Casino Coconut Creek and Seminole Casino Hollywood "Classic" have big car giveaways in May.

Last year, Seminole Coconut Creek casino gave away a car a day for the month of May.

“So we have to one-up ourselves,” general manager Steve Bonner said.

This month, the casino is guaranteeing at least a car a day, and up to 40 Mini Coopers, and the Seminole Hollywood Classic casino is giving away at least 11 and up to 59.

Seminole Coconut Creek will have a drawing daily and offer others via special events.

The monthlong promotion kicks off with a performance at 7 p.m. Friday by MiniKiss, a group of vertically challenged musicians that bills itself as the “world’s smallest tribute band.”

Regular car drawings will be at 9 weeknights and 6 p.m. Sundays. Saturdays vary. Thursdays also offer Wheel and Deal, where patrons pick a key and can either see if it fits the car or instead take an envelope for cash and free play.

On May 9, the casino will award a car to the patron who best guesses how many model-sized Mini Coopers are stuffed into a car.

On May 11, casino visitors can swipe their Player’s Club cards from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. for a chance to win a car. One card will have a predownloaded message notifying the winner.

A hot dog-eating contest is set for 7 p.m. May 16. The person who eats the most hot dogs will be among 10 names placed in a car drawing.

Seminole Hollywood Classic note that a unique facet of this promotion is that poker and bingo players also have cars to win.

Poker players who get four of a kind, a straight flush or a royal flush receive entry to a drawing at 9 p.m. May 26. Bingo players get entries each time they buy cards on Fridays or win a specific game. This drawing is 9:30 p.m. May 29.

The drawings with entries earned for slot play will be 10 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. A special giveaway is set for 5 to 9 p.m. May 31.

Meanwhile, each Monday and Saturday, notification of a Mini Cooper award will be downloaded onto a Player’s Club card. Guest can swipe their cards on those days from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

And Sundays, every 30 minutes from 3 to 7 p.m., guests whose names are drawn in the Cash or Cooper contest will pick a replica of a car. Each replica will be worth either $5,000 or a car.

Why is that truck hanging in the air?

Truck%20drop%203.JPG

Since early April, a truck with the date "April 30" has been suspended high above the Seminole Casino Hollywood, also known as "Seminole Classic." It's their Crash for Cash promotion.

Here's what's going on:

On Thursday, April 30, from 4:30 – 9 p.m., three people every 30 minutes will get $250 free play and one will earn a free spot in the Crash for Cash Final drawing. That day’s 10 finalists will each get a money bag of up to $2,500 plus at 10 p.m. one of them will move on to the Vault Grand Prize. There, they pick from 10 more bags, and can win up to $25,000. Plus, if the winner picks the correct briefcase they’ll "share the wealth" with 50 other people who’ll get $100 free play each.

The "truck" is really made out of styrofoam and has been hanging near the casino entrance along State Road 7.

Meanwhile, the $5 million Traveling Cash Display that has hit the Hard Rock and Seminole Coconut Creek, comes to Seminole Classic, with an opening event at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 23.

Seminole Player’s Club members also can win $1 million by swiping their Wild Card at a designated kiosk. The cash display ties in with the casino’s theme for April: “Seminole Stimulus”. Promotions include the $100,000 “Big Three Bailout” car giveaway each Sunday.

Players also can have their photo taken for free in front of the cash.

The quote from Seminole GM Adrian Fox: "April is our Seminole Stimulus month so we’re hoping the $5 million traveling display and $1 million jackpot stimulates the economy of one of our loyal players."

Other related promotions include:

Three winners every 30 minutes from 1-5:30 p.m. Sunday will receive $200 free play, plus one of them will be placed in the Big Three Bailout grand prize drawing at 6 p.m. for a chance to win a new car of their choosing from one of the Big Three automakers.

On Tuesday, guests can play in the Beat the Banker Quick Fire Slot Tournament. The person with the highest score will win $1,000 cash; others who beat the banker’s score can win $50, $150 or $250 in free play.

The 90-minute Las Vegas bachelorette show featuring Australian hunks. Tickets are $20 per person, available at the casino’s cashier’s cage. It'll be held at the casino's 500-seat pavilion.

Coconut Creek says Thunder From Down Under was voted “Best Dancers On The Las Vegas Strip” by the Las Vegas Review Journal.

Isle goes for baseball-themed promotions

Playing off the overall theme of "baseball," The Isle Casino and Racing has the following events on deck for April:

The events:

At 3 p.m. on Friday, April 3, Players Club members swipe their card to receive an entry to a drawing. From 4 p.m. to 11 p.m., winners will be selected every 15 minutes for $500 cash. A grand prize of $10,000 cash will be awarded at midnight.

On Saturday, April 4, drawings start at noon and go to 11 p.m. for $500 in cash every 15 minutes. The grand prize of $10,000 will be awarded at midnight.

The casino's "All Star Weekend" continues at noon Sunday with winners selected every 15 minutes and the grand prize of $20,000 awarded at 8 p.m.

From now until April 2, card members may swipe for five bonus entries daily.

The casino also is holding a "Baseball Diamond" free slot tournament:

Players score a "single" for 0-39,999 points and win $5 in IslePlay.

They score a "double" of 40,000 -69,999 and rewards $25 in IslePlay.

A "triple" is 70,000 – 99,999 points and nets $50 in IslePlay.

A "home run" of 100,000+ credits wins $100 in IslePlay.

Top score wins $1,000 IslePlay.

Every Monday in April is what the casino calls "Free Play Monday." They say to root for the home team (my guess here is it's Florida Marlins, but they couldn't use that in the promotion/standard procedure) and if any of the following occur, players win:

$5 IslePlay if the temperature at gametime is 85 degrees or higher;

$10 IslePlay if the home team shuts out an opponent;

$50 IslePlay if the home team hits for a cycle (single, double, triple, and home run for any one player);

$100 IslePlay if the home team pitcher throws a no-hitter.

On Friday, April 17, drawings will be held every hour for the $30,000 Home Run Sweepstakes. At 6 p.m. and 7 p.m., ten $500 IslePlay winners will be selected. At 8 p.m., a winner will receive suite tickets to a local professional baseball game (again, my guess is Marlins). At 9 p.m, win a trip for two to New York for a game, airfare and hotel. At 10 p.m., the grand prize winner receives $10,000 in cash.

On Sunday, April 26, at 3 p.m., two $1,000 IslePlay winners will be selected. At 4 p.m., five $400 IslePlay winners; at 5 p.m. ten $100 winners; 6 p.m. a $5,000 winner and the grand prize winner wins a Buick LaCrosse at 7p.m.

On Thursday, April 30 at 7:30 pm. and Friday, May 1 at 8 p.m., the Isle holds the $20,000 Doubleheader Jackpot Sweepstakes. At each drawing, win a share of $10,000 cash. Entries from April 30 will stay in the drum for Friday, May 1.

'Sopranos' cast members highlight Coconut Creek 'Wise Guy Weekend'

Steve%20Schirripa.jpg

Five former cast members of the HBO show The Sopranos will be on hand to meet fans and sign autographs on from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek.

The appearance is part of the casino’s “Wise Guy Weekend.” They are: Steve Schirripa (Bobby “Bakala” Baccalieri); Vincent Pastore (Sal “Big P” Bonpensiero); Vincent Curatola (Johnny “Sack” Sacramoni); John “Cha Cha” Ciarcia (Albie Cianflone); and Frederico Casteluccio (Furio Giunta).

The cast members’ appearance highlights the conclusion of Seminole Casino Coconut Creek’s “Great Coco Escape” month featuring the finale of the casino’s “Break the Bank” promotion, according to a casino press release.

The promotion takes place every hour from 1-5 p.m. Saturday. Players Club Members can earn entry into the promotion drawing by swiping their Player’s Club Card for a chance to select a bag of money from the “Bank of Seminole Casino Coconut Creek.”

Players have a one-in-five chance of winning up to $50,000, according to Marketing Director Michael Michaud.

The “Break the Bank” promotion uses an extravagant set as the casino created the “Bank of Seminole Casino Coconut Creek” for the promotion. Designed by Southern Studios in North Miami Beach, the “Bank of Seminole Casino Coconut Creek” features an 8-foot hole in the exterior of the wall appearing as if “wise guys” blasted their way into the vault.

“It’s turning into an overnight attraction,” General Manager Steve Bonner said. There's a dramatic sight complete with search lights and sirens, the casino says.

How much is $5 million? In 1819 it bought Florida from Spain

Photo gallery at http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/sfl-5-million-pg,0,4056242.photogallery

With security guards, bikini models, fireworks and a Beatles act, the Seminole Tribe of Florida today unveiled more money than has ever been on display at a casino.

The $5 Million Cash Tour made its debut at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino just before noon Wednesday. It's 50,000 $100 bills, neatly stacked and kept in a $90,000 1,300-pound shatterproof case.

About 500 gathered for the opening, including local gamblers, 13 members of the Port St. Lucie Red Hat Society and at least one man applying for a job.

"I got here at 9 a.m., turned in my application and decided to wait around," said George West of Fort Lauderdale, who wants to be a dealer. "There's girls, music and $5 million.

"What else would you want?"

Casino visitors can have their photos taken in front of the cash, provided they are Players' Club members (which takes about a minute to sign up for). A similar promotion at Binion's in Las Vegas, with $1 million, was a regular feature at the casino for 1964 to 2000 and recently has been reinstated.

Wednesday, friends Bob Knapstein and Tom Racaniello of Pompano Beach were first in line for photos. They had been playing blackjack.

"We were ready to go, but thought we'd do this," said Knapstein. The photo display is open from noon until 10 p.m.

The morning started with three songs from the Beatles band playing at the show Beatlemania Live! at the Hard Rock Live through March 29.

Their final song, of course, was Money.

cashpiles.jpg

Meanwhile, the Seminoles could give $1 million of it back daily. During each day of its promotion, the Tribe will download a $1 million prize onto one Players' Club member's card. If the person swipes his or her card on the day the money is downloaded, they win the cash. The Seminoles don't release how many Players' Club members they have but confirm it is in the tens of thousands.

More than 50 people were lined up at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, 30 minutes before the promotion's start. Consolation prizes include free play and $15 discounts at restaurants.

Among those interested in the display were two mother-daughter pairs on a two-day trip from LaCrosse, Wis.: (Moms listed first) Teri and Kaylene Juan and Patty and Sierra Fellows.

"It'd be even cooler if they had a high-powered gun that shot the money right at us," Teri said. They are not casino regulars.

By the way, what's $5 million?

It's the amount paid to Spain in 1819 to buy the state of Florida. It's less than 20 percent of the salary being paid to the New York Yankees' Alex Rodriguez, and it's about 2.5 percent of the annual payments the Seminole Tribe of Florida would be making were its compact with the state of Florida be in effect.

The tour dates: Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino: through Friday and May 8-16; Immokalee: March 23-29; Brighton: April 6-8; Coconut Creek: April 14-19; Hollywood “Classic”: April 23-26; Hard Rock Tampa May 18-25.

Casinos offer St. Patrick's Day promotions

Most gamblers have some kind of lucky tradition -- quirky card-cappers for poker and lucky hats and shirts for slots -- so St. Patrick's Day and the concept of luck is a natural hook for casinos.

South Florida gambling sites are varied in their promotions:

The Isle is having $17K St. Patrick's Day Swipe & Win from 9 a.m. to midnight. Everyone is guaranteed a minimum of $5 in free play, with a max of $1,000.

Mardi Gras has its third annual St. Patrick’s Day Pot of Gold Fest, from 7 to 11 p.m. It includes food, live entertainment, beads, boas, giveaways and green beer.

Seminole Coconut Creek borrows from 'Deal or No Deal'

DSC00152x.jpg

Instead of suitcases, contestants pick coconuts.

Instead of pushing a red button and hugging Howie Mandel as the cash starts to flow, they grab a banana and shake hands with Seminole Casino Coconut Creek’s Gary Friedman.

“CooCoo for Coconuts,” the casino’s version of Deal or No Deal, is attracting a crowd.

Contestants pick one of 10 coconuts, which have values of $1, $5, $50, $100, $500, $1,000, $1,500, $2,000, $3,000 and $20,000. Then, just like in Deal or No Deal, they try to drive up the banker’s price by discarding low values.

Originally, the casino considered embedding sheets of paper with the dollar figures in coconut bras that the models would then peel off. (They’d have clothing underneath, too.) But, fearing a Janet Jackson Super Bowl moment, the models now merely hold the coconuts at chest level and shake them.

Still, Friedman implores the models to “show us your coconuts” and the crowd hoots.
The promotion is at 7, 8, 9 and 10 p.m. Thursdays.

If you procrastinate for Valentine's Day, Hard Rock has bailout

cupid-valentines-day1.gif

Gamblers who procrastinate on a Valentine's Day gift might do better this year, instead of pathetically trolling a card shop with other uncreative guys, then grabbing a stuffed bear and a heart-shaped chocolate box just as the mall locks up at 9 p.m.

And making a lonely walk to your car in the parking lot, knowing you bought a routine gift that forces your spouse into a fake smile and a half-hearted hug, not that you blame her.

Not that I've ever done that or anything...

The Hard Rock poker room has four drawings for Valentine's Day packages, at 10 a.m., 2 p.m., 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Feb. 13. Talk about cutting it close. The winner of each drawing gets dinner for two at Council Oak ($160 value) restaurant, a room for two at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and concert tickets to a show in Hard Rock Live.

When pigs fly: Hollywood casino promotes "Swiftest Swine off the Line"

pigart.jpg

Be prepared for bad name puns: Britney Spareribs, Arnold Schwarzenpigger and Hamma Montana. It's part of the Seminole Casino Hollywood "Hog Wild" promotion for February featuring (believed to be a local casino first) pig races.

The feature event is "the Swiftest Swine Off the Line," operated by the touring Arkansas company called the Ham Bone Express. The pigs, who presumably don't know they have funny names, are kept in a trailer near the casino, and the races are held outside.

The casino will conduct 14 drawings each Thursday through Sunday, with 16 gamblers' names pulled for each race. Drawing winners are divided into groups of four and the race off involves four heats of four pigs each.

The winner of each heat will select an envelope that contains up to $2,500 cash. The winner of the final race gets the cash.

Like the recent Tic-Tac-Doe Chicken at Mardi Gras Gaming, the animals are monitored round-the-clock, their keepers say.

Veterinarians also inspect the pigs every month and follow all the provisions of the USDA Animal Welfare Act, the casino says.

Seminole Hollywood will have a "circuit event" slot tournament from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, one of more to come.

The winner goes to the final, which will be at the Hard Rock.

The Seminole Hollywood and Seminole Hard Rock casinos combine for a $1 million slot tournament Sept. 11-13.

That seems like a lot of money for a slot tournament; still trying to gather the details.

Meanwhile, would a casino with pigs be something that entices you to visit?

Phil Simms at Hollywood Hard Rock for the big game

Former NFL star Phil Simms of the New York Giants will headline "Rock the Game" festivities Sunday at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

Simms was the MVP in Super Bowl XXI. He's now a color commentator on CBS football games.

But to hang out with Simms, you need to pay $100 and entry the casino’s “Big Game Lottery.” Provided enough people buy tickets, the casino will draw a name at halftime and award him or her $50,000. Fewer entries will mean a lower jackpot.

The tickets are sold at the main casino cash cage. Player’s Club members can swipe their card at one of the designated kiosks located at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino for a chance to win a Saturn Sky. The drawing will take place at 6 p.m.

In addition, the casino is offering $500 free slot play drawings from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.

You can win a car with a pull of the slots in Isle promotion

isleCarx.jpg

There's a new twist to slot machines at the Isle Casino and Racing in Pompano Beach: instead of cash, players can win a new car.

The Burning Wheels Mystery Jackpot promotion began last week, and is expected to yield a $27,325 Pontiac Solstice convertible about once a month.

"We have had several drawings for cars and we always have a great turnout. Now we have a way for someone to win a car at any given time during the month," slots director Bill Crafts said. It is the only South Florida casino to offer a car as a slot prize.

It works like this:

Players sit at a bank of 26 $1 machines, wagering $1, $2 or $3 per spin.

The car is set up on a mystery progressive controller, which links all of the machines and tracks the amount of coins bet. The casino sets a starting value of 1,200 (like on a progressive slot machine) and a maximum value of 15,000. The mystery controller will select a random number between the starting value and the max value.

The coin that pushes the jackpot pool to the exact mystery amount will win the mystery jackpot. In this case, a car.

Crafts estimates that the car will hit somewhere between 1 day and 63 days, with an average hit every 32 days, presuming players sit at the $1 machine as much as planned.

A second jackpot, of $50 to $150, will hit every couple of hours.

Isle to have "Bail Out Everyone Day" Thursday

It strikes me as a bit of a reach, but the Isle is conducting "Bail Out Everyone Day" from 2-9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29.

As the Isle press release says: "Hey, we can all use a little help right now."

Their campaign (lightly edited by me):

Helping the hungry: The Isle will donate $1 for each person who plays the casino's new Burning Wheels Mystery Jackpot Slot machines. It will donate a minimum of $1,000.

Helping you: Everyone who plays the Burning Wheels Mystery Jackpot Slot machines gets a keychain. Every 15 minutes from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m., a player on the "hot seat" of a Burning Wheels Mystery Jackpot Slot machine will win a prize – including $1,000 cash; free play ranging from $25-$100; dinner for two at the Isle Buffet, Myron's Delicatessen or Farraddays' Steakhouse; and Isle gift cards for $20-$100.

Helping the country: The casino will be giving away a car approximately every 45 days. Everyone who plays the Burning Wheels Mystery Jackpot Slot machines may randomly win the car for only a $1. The first car is the Pontiac Solstice, a GM car.

"And we know the auto industry has their bail out!" the release says.

Hard Rock promotion takes aim at people's bills

Hard%20Rock%20Game%20Show%20Board-806.jpg

Talk about getting real: The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino’s latest promotion isn’t about exotic trips or fancy cars.

They say it’s to help pay your bills.

The casino’s “$250,000 Cash Exchange” promotion calls up 10 patrons, who push a button that selects their prize. Among them: Your phone bill, utilities, groceries, a car payment and property taxes. Actually, you get $250 to $2,000 in cash, or free casino play.

Whether players take the money and apply it to their bills, or head back to the casino is “their choice,” Hard Rock Vice President VP Joel Rovics said.

But with the economy tanked, and everyone worried about the short-term, the promotion has attracted a crowd, he said.

A “bonus” icon creates more winners, he said. When a Cash Exchange player hits it, free play is silently downloaded to selected casino Players’ Club members who have swiped their cards that day, creating more winners, he said.

The promotion is at 2 and 8 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays.

The stop is part of Rounder Magazine’s Florida promotional tour. The magazine is one of several the poker players can snag at most casino poker rooms.

(Nick's note: Originally, I had no quote marks around "Rounder Girls," so it showed up Rounder girls.... which sounds kind of wrong. Note to non-poker folks: A 'rounder' is a term made popular in the Matt Damon movie called, er, Rounders.)

The casino will, meanwhile, have a High Hand of the hour worth $150 plus an entry into drawing to win a cruise for two.

A multi-table tournament is at 11 a.m. Buy-in is $200. A Hold'em/Omaha High mixed tournament is at 6:30 p.m. that's $150.

Seminole Hollywood plans 29th anniversary party

Seminole Casino Hollywood, which made news earlier this year with Strip Poker and a 26-cars-in-26-days giveaway, is now turning its attention to a big 29th anniversary party on Dec.12-14.

Seminole Casino Hollywood started as a bingo hall on the Seminole’s Hollywood reservation in 1979. It continues to offer bingo but also has Las Vegas slot machines and poker.

“We’ve been operating continuously ever since and we’re fortunate to have a very, very loyal customer base. Many of our customers have been coming here for nearly 30 years,” said General Manager Adrian Fox, via a press release.

rayzor.jpg

Open to the public (21 and over), the casino’s birthday bash will feature as master of ceremonies the star of BET’s Comic View and Bad Boys of Comedy shows, Rayzor.

The weekend-long event will also feature “Birthday Bingo” worth $50,000; Junkanoo bands and live Caribbean-style music; an island themed prime rib buffet for only $5.99, and much more.

Laid back in comparison to its sister property, Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino just up the street, Seminole Casino Hollywood recently began bringing its promotions up a notch with its “26 Mustangs in 26 Days” that culminated on Nov. 30.

The Seminole Casino Hollywood, 4150 N. State Road 7, pioneered Indian gaming when it opened as the country’s first large stakes bingo hall in 1979, eventually expanding with gaming machines and poker. It is home to 1,000 machines, 15 poker tables featuring live and tournament play seven days a week, a 700-seat high stakes bingo room with a non-smoking area and a 50-seat Lightning Bingo room.

Chicken plays tic-tac-toe at Mardi Gras

MDG.D.74---65.jpg

Mardi Gras Gaming in Hallandale Beach has hatched a promotion that gave away $10,000 Friday -- no poultry sum.

OK, enough. The casino's Chicken Challenge features a tic-tac-toe playing chicken. Most games end in a tie, just like regular tic-tac-toe, but people keep lining up to play. Of the more than 1,000 visitors who played over the first weekend, only 322 won, according to Mardi Gras marketing director Ann Zebrowski.

The chickens have been trained at tic-tac-toe — they know when to block, for example. Players hit a touch-screen with their selections — the chicken and the players alternate going first — then the chicken jumps up and hits a tic-tac-toe square inside its booth with its beak. The chick's pick then registers on the display screen.

The grand prize went last Friday, but the promotion continues. Beat it and you get $50 in free play.

'James Bond' car part of Hard Rock casino promotion

2006-Aston-Martin-DBS-James-Bond-Casino-Royale-Daniel-Craig-1600x1200.jpg

The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino's "License to Win" promotion in November includes 40 shots at $100,000 and one at $1,000,000, plus six tries at an Aston Martin DB 9 Volante, the car James Bond himself uses.*

The casino's “Crack the Code” promotion consists of prizes of from $250 up to $100,000 awarded four times a day at 2 p.m., 4 p.m., 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Wednesdays (5, 12, 19 and 26), Thursdays (6, 13 and 20) and Fridays (7, 14 and 21). Players must pick five "Hard Rock" logos from 10 choices in order to get the $100,000.

The grand finale is Nov. 28, with a chance to win up to $100,000 at 2 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. with $1,000,000 up for grabs at 8 p.m.

At 9 p.m. Tuesdays (4, 11and 25) and Sundays (9, 16 and 23) the casino tries to give away an Aston Martin DB 9 Volante. Participants must match two logos from 15 possibilities. Additional cash drawings are 5 – 8 p.m.

* -- Well, Bond is actually a fictional person. So the Aston Martin is the kind the Bond character uses in the movies. Just clarifying.

Once, at Disney World, my wife suggested we eat at the pasta place in the front of the grounds, "where Lady and the Tramp ate," she said. I had to gently tell her the two dogs were fictional characters.

Heat victory total, half-court shot part of Hard Rock promotion

basketball-shot-424.jpg

Even though the Miami Heat isn't a participant, the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino is offering two promotions related to the team.

It starts with a watch party opening night Wednesday at the center casino bar for the game against the New York Knicks. From then until Dec. 29, those who sign up for the promotion will receive $20 in free play if the Heat wins 16 games (enough to break .500) from opening night through Dec. 30.

Then on Jan. 17, everyone that registered will be entered in a drawing; if the winner makes a half-court shot, he or she wins $500,000. (The casino likely will set up a hoop outside, near the front valet area.) To be part of the promotion, you have to join the casino's Players' Club, which is free.

The Heat is aware of the promotion, but can't endorse it. (The team has a marketing agreement with the Miccosukee Tribe.)

Sports gambling is illegal in Florida, but casinos are tiptoeing into ways to tie in sports. The Isle and Gulfstream, for example, have NFL prediction contests running and Mardi Gras gives away tickets to "Your Hometown NFL Team," while not naming the Dolphins directly.

JR from 'Dallas' coming as part of oil well giveaway

10038538A~Larry-Hagman-Dallas-Posters.jpg

But if he's really in character, he'll try to take the oil well away from the winner...

Larry Hagman, who played conniving JR Ewing on the TV show Dallas, is part of the latest Seminole Casino Coconut Creek giveaway: an oil well. Hagman will sign autographs at the casino from 3-4:30 p.m. Oct. 11.

On Nov. 22, the casino will give away an oil well that produces two to five barrels per day.

"Everybody is giving away gas cards these days. But anybody can do that. We figured we’d one-up them and make a tycoon out of someone," Coconut Creek GM Steve Bonner said.

The winner of the oil well will receive a recurring revenue stream for life, he said.

"With the cost of oil at $100 a barrel, you can figure out yourself. The winner will receive thousands every month," he said. (My math: $200/day *365= $73,000 per year.)

Hagman's show ended 17 years ago (Dallas aired from 1978-91), but the casino has reached farther before, bringing in Leave it to Beaver stars. That show's first run ended 45 years ago.

Meanwhile, the casino has established a corporation with this name Take Stock in Black Gold Inc. Players Club members are all eligible to be stockholders and earn shares with every 1,000 points they earn while playing slots. The market value will be posted daily. They’ll turn their shares in each day for that market value/ free play.

Whatever happened to just a good old free-play coupon?
