Cosmic Bingo: Lights out at Seminole Classic

Digital%20Photo%20Cosmic%20Bingo%20002.jpg

Two disco balls scatter silver light over the dark room. Dance music thumps. And the bingo caller implores, “Somebody scream!”

Cosmic Bingo has hit Seminole Casino Hollywood.

“Definitely not your grandma’s bingo,” general manager Adrian Fox said.

The staff wear outlandish wigs and fluorescent shirts that say: “Play With Me In The Dark.”

Players have glow-sticks around their necks. Danceable oldies blare ... Stevie Wonder’s Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I’m Yours, Kool & The Gang’s Ladies Night and the BeeGees’ Stayin’ Alive.

It's at 10 and 11 p.m. Fridays. A package of cards for eight games costs $6. Winners usually get $100, but the last game is for $250 in free casino play, and there’s a “progressive” game where the prize can grow to $1,000. Call 954-961-3220.

James Allen: "We proved a lot of people wrong"

crystalHardRock.jpg

Management at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino were in a celebratory mood Monday, as the casino celebrated its five-year anniversary.

CEO of gaming James Allen talked about scouting the property nine years ago (it's a former trailer park): "They said the location wasn't good, you can't get enough money and you're not on the beach. I guess we proved some people wrong."

The tribe's Max Osceola (pictured with the venue's president, Phil Madow) was among those who received a ceremonial guitar. He credited the tribe's elders: "They made this possible. Back in 1957 they saved this tribe from termination ... Rock On!"

Meanwhile, Hard Rock International announced that the casino's Hard Rock Cafe received the "Top of the Rock" award, presented to six franchises and six company-owned cafes each year. (There are 125 in the chain.) Robin Melvin is the cafe's sales and marketing manager.

The criteria: financial performance, unique sales accomplishments and community contributions. The Hollywood Hard Rock especially supports the Daily Bread Food Bank and the Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital.

Their prize? They'll display Jimi Hendrix's white Gibson SG guitar, played during his 1969 appearance on The Dick Cavett Show, his breakout moment. I was too young to see it, but I'll ask Tom Jicha if he remembers it. There's a YouTube video of his performance, and I put up his interview.

All you can eat on the cheap

The service at the $2.95 breakfast buffet at the Seminole Casino in Coconut Creek is exactly what I expected: scarce and grumpy.

However, for for such a cheap price, the food was well worth it.

I am not an early riser, but I couldn't resist such a deal.

So, here's a rundown of my fare (all of it was surprisingly fresh):

Scrambled eggs: Dense and salty.
Potatoes: Soft and greasy.
Sausage: Meaty. Not from the frozen aisle.
Bacon: Tasty but just a little chewy. Just a little.
Coffee: Fresh, thank god.
Croissant: Flaky and buttery.
Frittata: See scrambled eggs.

I skipped the breakfast pizza, but the French toast looked good. There were also bread, pastries and fruit.

Yes, it was basic.

Yes, it was $2.95.

And yes, I am sure I will find myself there after playing poker all night.
