New York Marathons for couch potatoes

By Ron Bishow
Special to amNewYork

About 37,000 people will tie up their laces to conquer the New York City Marathon on Sunday. But if you’re someone who finds it off-putting to travel 26 miles in anything other than a car, you’re still in luck. There are plenty of ways to create your own marathon this month, and, thankfully, none of them have anything to do with grabbing a cup of water while taking your own pulse.

Meat marathon
Porcao Churrascaria
360 Park Ave. South at 26th Street, 212-252-7080
Daily, $35.90, lunch; $50.90, dinner

Why work up an appetite running when you can just sit and eat? Brazilian restaurant Porcao Churrascaria offers an all-you-can-eat meat-fest with 18 different types. Unlimited rib-eye, dry pork loin, flank steak, charred sausage and bacon-wrapped turkey is all yours for $35.90 for lunch or $50.90 for dinner.

Beth Ostrosky on running the Marathon

By Julie Gordon

Beth2.jpg

Beth Ostrosky didn’t bask in marital bliss the morning after her star-studded Le Cirque wedding to Howard Stern in October. Instead, she ran eight miles.

“I had to stick to my plan,” said Ostrosky, referring to her strict training regimen for the New York City Marathon, which she’s running on Sunday.

Ostrosky, 36, told us about her intense marathon preparation and her new husband’s important role in the process.

How did you decide to run?
Ever Sunday in November when the New York City Marathon happens, I’ve always said to myself, ‘I want to do that someday.’ But I didn’t have an incentive to run. I’m the spokesperson for the North Shore Animal League and I was seeing Lance Armstrong on every interview raising money for his charity. And I thought, ‘My gosh, that’s the perfect thing for me.’ My goal was to raise $10,000 per marathon mile, in hopes to raise $260,000. I raised over $280,000.

The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror

By Scott A. Rosenberg

Think what you will of what “The Simpsons” has become in its latter years, the annual “Treehouse of Horror” episode, airing Sunday on Fox at 8 p.m., has remained appointment television.

This year’s episode includes three inspired segements, as well another timely political opener (I can’t be the only person who says, “Don’t blame me, I voted for Kodos.” Look it up people.)

"theanyspacewhatever" at the Guggenheim

• ‘theanyspacewhatever’ is at the Guggenheim through Jan. 27. 1071 Fifth Ave, 212-423-3500

Making sense of contemporary art can be difficult. We often need time and perspective to separate the super-hyped from the truly genius. The Guggenheim is attempting to start the dialogue on recent history with its new group show “theanyspacewhatever.”

The exhibit brings together 10 artists who came to prominence in the '90s for pushing the boundaries of art to the experiential rather than just representational; the artists want the viewer to do, not just look, to enjoy the art. The works on view engage the space and the viewer in a way that makes the exhibit itself a work of art.

Movie review: 'Dear Zachary'

Dear Zachary
4 stars
Documentary by Kurt Kuenne

By Mina Hochberg

Kurt Kuenne’s intensely personal documentary “Dear Zachary” is one of the most emotionally draining, devastating films to come out in recent years and will put your tear ducts to work.

On Nov. 5, 2001, a young doctor named Andrew Bagby was shot to death in western Pennsylvania. In the following days, evidence pointed resoundingly to an ex-girlfriend named Shirley Turner, but she fled the country for her home in Newfoundland before U.S. authorities could intervene. Soon after, she announced that she was pregnant with Andrew’s child, a boy named Zachary.

Movie review: 'Zack and Miri Make a Porno'

Zack and Miri Make a Porno
2 stars
Written and Directed by Kevin Smith
Starring Seth Rogen, Elizabeth Banks, Jason Mewes, Traci Lords

By Mina Hochberg

With a title like “Zack and Miri Make a Porno,” restraint would be the ultimate irony. But director Kevin Smith instead gets his kicks from being crass and in-your-face.
Well, maybe there is a little irony in the fact that the heart of a movie about a porno is actually a sentimental love story. Zack (Seth Rogen) and Miri (Elizabeth Banks) are lifelong friends and dirt-poor roommates who hit rock bottom when, one day in the dead of winter, they lose their water, heat and electricity. Like any opposite-sex buddies would do to get rich quick, they decide to make a porn film.

As they bounce porno titles off each other, all of which are too dirty to cite here, Zack and Miri proceed to scour Pittsburgh’s seamier demographic for a cast of co-stars.
They’ve also scripted a sex scene for themselves into the movie. It’s just sex, nothing will change between us, they vow. And of course, everything does. The romantic tension between Zack and Miri is sweet, and you can’t help but root for a happy ending.

Up late: Tracy Jordan Morgan on Conan

By Emily Hulme

Tracy Morgan was on Conan last night. Among other things they discuss Tracy's mayoral campaign, a fight between Oprah and Sade in an airport over Tracy's love, and Tracy's various fathers — Ernest Borgnine was his biological father, but Telly Savalas raised him. Also, his scary Halloween costume is George Bush's 3rd term.

It's hysterical, and somehow suggests that this episode of "30 Rock" might not be so far off from the truth. Though, as this NY Mag article discusses, Morgan is definitely self-aware enough to know that people eat up the crazy, so he probably plays it up.

It's convincing enough to Conan, however, who remains nonplussed throughout the interview.

"I don't wanna do this, but who's Kimbo Slice?"

Up late: Obama-mania on 'Daily Show' and Colbert

By Emily Hulme

Jon Stewart raked Barack Obama over the coals last night ... OK, of course he didn't. Stewart and Obama had an amiable little "Daily Show"-style chat, with both of them cracking jokes for each other. Just the sort of mutual admiration society you tune into the "Daily Show" to watch.

Then, in a surprise move, arch-conservative Stephen Colbert came out and endorsed Obama. Because he was tired of Republican for Obama William Weld getting all the attention. In the end, he admitted that he'll still vote for McCain, but bask in the glory of having endorsed Obama.

The Simpsons vs. Mad Men

By Emily Hulme

"The Simpsons" parody/pay homage to "Mad Men" in the credits to this week's forthcoming Treehouse of Horror episode.

Also from this episode, Homer votes for Obama. "C'mon, it's time for a change!"

30 Rock returns!

By Emily Hulme

The season premiere of "30 Rock" has been on hulu.com for the last week but tomorrow night it returns on NBC proper. I have to say, first off, I am envious of Liz Lemon's wardrobe. So is Jack Donaghy, I think. "What's with the outfit, Lemon? Did the people from that makeover show finally respond to your letter?" he asks in the cold open.

But, seriously, the show remains great and more people should be watching it. Why, after the jump.
