'Grey's Anatomy' axes gay doc
Gay storylines are being given the boot from Seattle Grace.
Brooke Smith, who plays Dr. Erica Hahn on ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy,” has been canned from the doctor drama, the network said Monday night. She will make her last appearance as Dr. Callie Torres’ (Sara Ramirez) love interest on Thursday’s episode.
“Brooke Smith was obviously not fired for playing a lesbian,” said series creator and executive producer Shonda Rhimes. “Clearly it’s not an issue, as we have a lesbian character on the show — Calliope Torres.”
Rhimes said simply replacing Smith’s character with another lesbian would “belittle the relationship,” and that the ending will be played out in the show.
Newcomer Melissa George’s character, a bisexual intern, was brought on as another potential gal for Callie, but now there’s speculation that storyline is being dropped as well.
“She starts off flirting with Callie but it never goes anywhere,” an insider told E! Online.
ABC declined to comment on the George rumor.
Rhimes called Ramirez “an incredible comedic and dramatic actress.”
“Unfortunately, we did not find that the magic and chemistry with Brooke’s character would sustain in the long run,” Rhimes said.
