Presidential parties: Celebrating the inauguration

At this point, if you don’t already have plans, visiting D.C. for Barack Obama’s inauguration is out of the question. Not to worry. Plenty of New York organizations are throwing inaugural balls, parties and events on Tuesday.

Brooklyn Inaugural Ball

Help the community while you show your support for Obama. Proceeds from the Brooklyn Inaugural Ball benefit PS 261, a magnet school for the arts in Boerum Hill. The evening will feature a re-broadcast of Obama’s speech, wine, food, a show from spoken-word artist Karen Gibson Roc and live music.

Sure, Hillary Clinton didn’t win the Democratic presidential nomination, but her supporters will appreciate this Inauguration Day brunch and watch party held by nonprofit The White House Project, which seeks to train 36,000 women to run for office by 2013. The event, hosted by “Daily Show” creator Lizz Winstead, includes food and mimosas.

Get to know Obama with this evening of short plays inspired by “the man, the myth(s) and the Michelle.” The performances were originally commissioned and performed right before the election by theater collective Creative Destruction. Friday’s performance will be followed immediately by a party.

Progressive politics group Living Liberally is hosting a celebratory soiree this year at gay club Rush. Admission starts at $20 — which includes party access, one drink, food and gifts — and jumps all the way to a $4,400 sponsorship package. Cans of food will be collected for the Food Bank of New York City, and proceeds benefit Living Liberally’s chapters and programs around the country.

Broadway actress Brenda Braxton, currently in “Chicago,” is throwing this cocktail party at her Harlem gentleman’s grooming salon BBraxton. But instead of shaves and haircuts, BBraxton will offer drinks, hors d’oeuvres, a DJ spinning tunes and a tape-delay broadcast of the inauguration. All proceeds benefit The Actors Fund and the Columbia University Community Services Program.

New York State Assemblyman Adam Clayton Powell IV is hosting this day-long event at Hudson River Cafe. A three-course lunch, running from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. is $25 and includes live, telecast of the inauguration plus remarks from Powell. A three-course dinner, running from 4 to 11 p.m., is $35 and includes a replay of the inauguration and remarks from Powell. Then, at 11 p.m., the restaurant will host a party with live music.
