The Mighty Boosh hits the states
It’s hard to describe exactly what The Mighty Boosh is. British comedians Noel Fielding and Julian Barratt have been working under that name for about a decade, doing their act live and on radio and television.
The show centers around the absurd adventures of Vince Noir and Howard Moon as they get stranded on desert islands, fight kangaroos, etc.
A comedy sensation in their home country, the Boosh has gathered a growing following stateside.
We spoke with the pair about their act.
After 10 years, what keeps you attached to the Mighty Boosh?
Fielding: We’re rubbish at everything else. Sometimes we say we’re going to take a break and do something else, but I can’t repair cars; I can’t do anything else. We always end up coming back together.
How did you start out?
Barratt: Initially, we wanted to make a TV show. We gave people a script and they said it was going to cost too much money and it didn’t make sense. And so we did it live to show people how that worked. Then we did a radio show. Everything was to prove that we could do these things.
What is your writing process like?
Fielding: We talk about what we’re going to do for weeks, but we don’t actually do anything. You have to drink lots of different sort of drinks. You drink lots of coffees, then you’re going to need juice, then you need some water, then you need some tea. ... You go through the whole gamut of drinks. Anything to not do any actual work until you have to.
Will there be a fourth season of the TV show?
Barratt: We’re wondering what we should do next — whether we should do a film, which is in the pipeline, in a very early stage. Or we could do another TV show, or work out if America ... would be interested in doing something.
Fielding: There’s music as well; we’d like to do an album at some point. There’s a lot we could do.
