Big Bug Eyes

One of the joys of searching the Viral Video Universe is that it's, well, a universe. There are warm, inviting planets out there. But there are also cold, dark corners. They're no so much dangerous, as just weird and quite alien:

This man makes a whole series of videos of himself talking and doing things with Gollum-like bug eyes. And I don't mean like Susan Sarandon's:

When I saw this I had immediate flashbacks to the first episode of television that scared the hell out of me, an episode of the The Outer Limits called The Mutant. It was about an exploration to a planet called Annex One. And if you got caught outside in its radioactive rain, well....

X-Files 2: Mulder and Scully Return!

Will someone please release the X-Files 2 trailer in QuickTime? This movie is sneaking up on a lot of geeks this summer, and I'm pretty sure the film-going masses aren't even aware that Mulder and Scully are back.

A very crummy hand-held version shot at a film convention has been making the rounds. This version, apparently shot on someone's plasma, is much better. No good word on the plot has leaked, other than it's apparently not part of the alien invasion mythology that so crippled the series in its final years:

Marley the Dog -- on YouTube

Perhaps you've heard that there are some people in town shooting a movie about a dog named Marley. You also might have heard that these same people were at Sun-Sentinel this week, shooting scenes for said movie, about a dog and his owner, former Sentinel columnist John Grogan.

Now, Watch This Now brings you something that the paparazzi, People and Us Weekly have not yet discovered: Exclusive video of Marley the Dog. The real Marley.

Turns out Marley was in a movie, before his life became the subject of a movie. Marley's film debut came in The Last Home Run, which was filmed in Lake Worth a decade ago.

I found this clip early in the week, in a search for some Marley-related video, but thought it was just coincidence that a Labrador named Marley was in a movie. Then, while pretending to work at my desk while in the background of a scene for Marley & Me, I found an old Grogan column on the Sentinel's web site about Marley's movie role. (Click on this link to read the column.)

Check out Marley as himself in The Last Home Run:

Be careful watching Gnarls Barkley

The new Gnarls Barkley record debuts April 8 and judging by the first single "Run," it's going to be just as fun as their first album St. Elsewhere.

But don't expect to see the video on television much--if at all. There's a concern that the images that start at the 2:10 mark could cause people to have seizures. Seriously.

The new Incredible Hulk trailer

It was only five years ago that I was eagerly awaiting Ang Lee's Hulk movie. It was a bit of a disappointment -- a failed attempt to make a popcorn superhero movie with art-house sensibilities.

It paled in comparison to the first X-Men and Spider-Man movies. Lee's Hulk was better than the Daredevil movie, but that's not much of a compliment.

Now we have a new Hulk movie starring Ed Norton and Tim Roth. I think they may have gotten it right this time, based on the trailer.

Norton is a great choice to play Bruce Banner -- a mild-mannered scientist who can get really, really mad. He's already played similar roles in Fight Club and Primal Fear.

The skydiving cat

This video sort of freaked me out. The cat, strapped to his owner, looks calm until he is nearly out of the airplane. At the edge, he starts flailing in his jumpsuit and booties. The owner jumps and then the video ends!

Does the cat survive?

He wasn't even wearing goggles. I was very distressed.

I found an article, but I don't read Russian. Fortunately, one desk away from me sits editor John-Thor Dahlburg, who is pretty much the master of multiple languages. So I begged him, a former reporter who once worked in Afghanistan covering the Taliban resistance to the Soviets, to interpret this puff piece on a sky-diving kitty.

The good news is that the cat survived the sky dive. His name is Malysh. The 60-year-old owner is Vladimir Kulikov, a retiree from a town near Moscow. Apparently, Kulikov has been preparing for the co-jump for five years. He even sewed together a custom-suit for his cat. They jumped from 1,200 meters and the cat made no noise and showed no sign of fear. Upon landing, Malysh was presented a certificate for the jump.

Kulikov is working on creating a special parachute so Malysh can jump solo in the future.

Get Your Lost On

It's one of the smartest, best acted series in the history of television. At a time when more and more tube time is consumed by amateur singers, cheating couples on lie-detectors and obese people trying to lose weight for rewards, Lost is a monument to genre-bending fiction that raises profound questions about religion, science and the human condition.

But try telling that to someone who has never seen the show, right? They look at you with the patience and sad sympathy one gives a homeless man who insists his shopping cart contains the Holy Grail. Only you can't give a Lost fan a dollar in the hope they'll go away.

American (and British) Idols: Ramiele and Simon

Ok, full disclosure: this WTN writer doesn't get the whole American Idol thing.

First, I don't like listening to other people singing my favorite classics, unless there's some really great interpretation. (example: Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder doing "Last Kiss.") Nor do I like the whole non-rock band orientation (Vedder would have probably been voted off in the first round).

So that's where I'm coming from. That said, I was really ticked off to see Simon Cowell, who I can't seem to escape even though I don't watch the show, quoted as calling 'In My Life,' a boring song. Adding to the insult is that it was sung by South Florida's own Ramiele Malubay. I mean, really, the gall:

But Cowell apparently does have a sense of humor, or at least a sense of marketing. He did this wonderful parody on The Simpsons a while back. (They really should add the trap door to the show.)

I don't need to be Tazed for audience amusement, and I don't need to be hit by an experimental new military ray gun to let others guess how painful it is with my reaction.

Though based on this "60 Minutes" reporter's reaction, it looks like it really, really hurts: "One, one thousand, two, two thousand, threeeeyaaaaargh!"

Scary plane landing in Germany

I hate to fly so I typically shy away from any videos involving scary plane landings. I especially hate said videos when I'm getting on a plane later in the week to fly across the country.

But my colleague Steve Svekis was kind enough to send this video of a scary plane landing in Germany to me, so I will post this. Then I'll go stock up on tiny, 3-oz bottles of vodka to take on board with me to help get me through the flight.

The Larry Craig Congressional Internship

All you need to know is the premise of this is true. U.S. Sen. Larry Craig, he of the tapping foot and hand gestures in the airport men's room fame, has announced a congressional internship program for students who want to see the inner workings of government up close. Very close:

Jack Nicholson endorses Hillary Clinton

Happy Election Day, Texas and Ohio! In case you were relying on Jack Nicholson to help you decide who to vote for in this hotly contested Democratic primary, he's just released this video.

He's endorsing Clinton, by the way.

This election year spawned a bunch of celebrity endorsement videos on the Internet. Which is your favorite so far? (Even better, if you've got a favorite clip, post it.)

Soulja Boy movement officially dead

These ladies ain't bad. The crowd loves them. But for me, once grandmothers start picking up on a trend, then it's time to officially take said trend out behind a shed and put it out of its misery.

The coordinated moves occur midway through the video:

Human Giant is back! And with an angry monkey!

Some of the best sketch comedy on television right now is on MTV's "Human Giant," which returns March 11. It consistently has more laughs in an half-hour than "Saturday Night Live" does in 90 minutes (but I got to admit the Tina Fey episode had some good moments).

Here's a sketch from the new season. The lesson: Don't allow an armed monkey to star in your television commercial.

Battlestar Galactica

This great show returns in April for its final season. What follows is a preview from Canadian television.

If you don't watch, your life is bereft of all meaning. Critics have called it the smartest show on television, if for no other reason than its relevance to our post 9-11 world.

The basic premise is that humans in a distant galaxy have been wiped out by a robotic race they created called the Cylons. The humans are polytheists, worshipping the mythical gods of ancient Rome. The robots are fundamentalist, worshiping the one true god they believe has destined them to replace the human race.

Sound familiar?

The remaining human suvivors, like the 12 Tribes of Israel, are wandering through space looking for a fabled final lost colony called Earth.

It's All Greek to Him

Philosophy has now eclipsed sports, video games and online porn in terms of viral video growth. What's even more encouraging is that viewers have gone beyond those old standbys like Plato and Aristotle to mine the real wisdom from ancients who didn't didn't get their props back in Athens.

Like Phistophecles.

My favorite piece of ancient advice (from Book 3): "If you drop a drachma in the vomitorium, just let it go. Let it go."

All the news fit to fight about

Here's a classic clip demonstrating how newsroom politics can sometimes spill over into the product. While the reporter-anchor fight is very entertaining, there are some serious questions begged by this report:

1) Why is the woman being interviewed in her bathrobe?

2) If she lives on the first-floor, why does she feel so strongly about the elevator?

3) What gems of wisdom does the anchor hope to gleam from the woman?

4) Why is this a story? (A question I think all reporters find themselves asking from time to time when out on assignment.)

Latest Mike Myers trailer; Mini-Me is back

The trailer for Mike Myers' summer flick "The Love Guru" is out. I'm a big fan of the Wayne's World movies and the first two Austin Powers flicks (not so much the third). This one could have potential. It also stars Jessica Alba and Justin Timberlake (who seems to be doing a Borat impression).

Glad to see Verne "Mini-Me" Troyer back in a Myers film. I'm still trying to shake that image of him drunk in "The Surreal Life."
