The Curious Case of Forrest Gump

The guy who wrote the screenplay for the Curious Case of Benjamin Button also wrote the screenplay for Forrest Gump. And, it appears from this video, that he simply changed the names, times and events and kept the same formula, storytelling, themes and characters.

I understand that both movies were inspired by different stories (Gump, a novel, Button, a short story) but come on. Best similarities: "He spends time on a boat in the Gulf, with a drunk. He befriends a weird, black dude."
