What, no Adam West?
One of the most quiet Internet revolutions going on right now is in the area of shared music. No, I don't mean bands creating buzz off their websites and becoming the next Ok Go. What I'm talking about are the millions upon millions of amateurs out there who are using video to share music, guitar licks, lyrics and voice lessons. I can't imagine what the publishers of sheet music are doing to make ends meet these days, but, as the father of an amateur up-and-coming guitarist, I can tell you that web video is nearly as important at the guitar.
That brings us to Aimee Mann. The songstress, one of the smartest lyricists working these days, is holding a contest for fans to sing along with her song, Freeway. Take a look:
And here's the original video of her song, Freeway:
And here's a utterly shameless plug for my son, Gabe Collie, and his friend, Zack Cohen, singing Sublime's Santeria. They have never met Ms. Mann and are still mulling over taking part in her contest:
Downloading your cute laughing and biting babies onto YouTube poses certain risks.
Well, yeah.
But let's be clear about this. Your biting baby named Charlie may not only become the source of techno remixes but gay porn parodies. (We can't show you that one, but go to Funny or Die.)
We posted the original "Charlie Bit Me" clip a few months ago, but in case you missed it, the original:
Next, the techno remix:
There's also any number of amateur parodies. Check this out:
In case you ever wondered what the voices behind Nickelodeon's "Spongebob Squarepants" would sound outside their animated undersea universe, this clip is for you. Make sure to watch for Spongebob as Don Corleone.
This works particularly well. A good marriage of music and movie.
This was on our site about a month ago, but we're posting it again today. It's excellent. If you read today's Lifestyle piece, this is the fan-made video setting scenes from "Once Upon a Time in the West" to Arcade Fire's "My Body is a Cage." The video by J. Tyler Helms has even earned props from Bruce Springsteen.
More on this from the story: "On his blog, Helms sounded amazed at the success of his fusion: 'The Boss himself. Honored doesn't begin to say it.' "
Here's the video:
If you are a fan of scary movies, then you’ll love the video, “Scary Mary.”
It’s a re-edit of the classic “Mary Poppins” film, made into a horror movie trailer.
Check out other re-edited films and movie trailer mash-ups at thetrailermash.com. Among the top rated trailers include a remake of “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” as a thriller and the “Shining” as a romantic comedy.
Sometimes, little gifts like this clip fall in your lap.
Like when it’s nearly 11 p.m. and you’re doing random searches for YouTube videos that don’t involve Ron Paul nor contain the Seven Words That Can’t Be Posted On This Blog Or We’ll Get In Huge Trouble.
All I’ll say is, it’s amazing what you can do with an old Return of the Jedi clip and a harmonica track.
We like this stuff. We think about it. And we show you our favorites.
