Rap tribute to Billy Mays

Billy Mays kind of revolutionized the infomercial personality. Without him, we would never had cared that Vince "Shamwow" Shlomi pummeled a prostitute.

He also seemed like a decent guy with a good sense of humor. In that vein, here's a rap tribute to Billy Mays, set to Ice Cube's "Today Was a Good Day".

Hammer Pants flash mob strikes again

More video from the Hammer Pants crew, this time on a street in Santa Monica.

Sadly, it appears this whole thing is not a spontaneous show of love and support for Hammer. Instead, it is a gimmick for people to watch Hammer's new reality show, Hammertime, on A&E. (The aetv.com/hammertime plug at the end of the video sort of gives it away.)

But no matter. I still dig the dance moves -- and the pants.

Joe Jonas dances to "Single Ladies"

Joe Jonas is not exactly on the cutting edge of a trend here, given that we've posted at least a half-dozen "Single Ladies" parodies on this very blog -- including Justin Timberlake, Paul Rudd and Beyonce on SNL, the really thin guy doing a split-screen dance with Beyonce, even the guy dancing in the snow and the large man dancing in a leotard.

But if you want to watch Joe Jonas dance in heels and tights to plug their latest CD, here's your chance.

Thru-You: sampling YouTube music videos to create original works

I'm sure this has been done before. But I'm betting few have integrated completely disparate YouTube music clips so artfully.

A day in the life of Abbey Road with Beatles fans

When the Fab Four sang "Why Don’t We Do It In the Road?", this probably isn’t what they had in mind. Almost 40 years – that’s 40 years – since the Beatles released Abbey Road, goofy tourists in London still take turns posing on that famous zebra crossing, as the Brits call it.

So Aussie band Blame Ringo set up a camera to watch ’em, and turned the result into the video for their new single, Garble Arch. Pity you can’t see the long-suffering drivers’ expressions. It’s enough to make a stiff upper lip quiver.

Worst vampire pop song ever

Vampires are all sorts of huge right now, what with this amazing pop culture behemoth that is the Twilight books/movie. And as Twilight grabs all sorts of headlines, this weekend I stumbled across this video by some guy calling himself DJ Bobo. The song is called "Vampires Are Alive." There is much dancing and wearing of black.

This clip is so bad, it makes me want to grab a clove of garlic and my cross and call Buffy. (The Sarah Michelle Gellar version of the Slayer, of course. Not Kristy Swanson.)

So Jay-Z opened his set at Nelson Mandela's birthday concert by sing-talking the Oasis hit "Wonderwall."

This to me seems an odd way to start the show -- he seems to forget some of the words, and he's sort-of playing a guitar, and really it's just Jay-Z sort-of singing along with Noel Gallagher's disembodied voice. You'd think Beyonce could have talked him out of his.

Then again, maybe I'm just grumpy that this song came out in 1995 when I was a junior in college, and it just hit me that 1995 was more than a decade ago.

In case you don't get all the references, Valleywag broke down the video and pulled the original clips. There are a few that I had never even seen before.

The next viral video: Weezer music video

Write a Song with Rivers Cuomo

Weezer's new album is due out next month, but a number of tracks are already all over the net. I stumbled onto this odd little promo, "Write a Song with Rivers Cuomo," on YouTube.

And remember, he's going to spend the week with his grandparents, and they're still on dial-up:

Frank Sinatra Tributes

It's been 10 years since the Chairman of the Board left the room. The U.S. Postal Service is debuting a stamp and there's new a CD collecting some of his best songs. Here are a couple of the better tribute videos that are on the ol' YouTube.

Name that tune -- on PVC

Now here's an interesting way to listen to your favorite song -- have someone play it on an instrument fashioned from multiple PVC pipes.

I was able to name the first two songs -- 1979 by the Smashing Pumpkins and Annie Waits by Ben Folds -- but couldn't figure out the third. Any ideas?

Can't get this "Cappuccino" song out of my head

I first heard The Knux's "Cappuccino" last week and I can't get it out of my head. It's like someone unearthed a really good mid-80s rap track.

Listen if you dare, but there's a good chance you'll find yourself saying "Fresh cappuccino with a mocha twist" later in the day.

New Kids on the Block reunion and cartoon

When I heard the news that the New Kids on the Block were reuniting for a CD and tour, I shrugged indifferently. But I think I underestimated the old-school boy band's lingering power. When I told some female friends about the impending tour, I caught a glimpse of their inner teeny bopper when they semi-shrieked and asked if they'd tour nearby. It frightened me, I confess.

Here's something that should frighten you: The intro to the old New Kids on the Block cartoon series. Complete with animated dance moves and twirling, hovering microphone stands.

After the jump, check out the reunion announcement on the Today show.

Vanilla Ice video - 'Ice Ice Baby'

Vanilla Ice, or Robert Van Winkle, has been incarcerated following an altercation with his wife. You can check out the story here.

He isn't the only musician who has been arrested in Palm Beach County for a domestic dispute. Scott Stapp, lead singer of Creed, was charged with domestic battery last year following an argument with his wife.

Here's the video that entrenched Van Winkle forever into pop culture:

Hands down strangest version of Start Me Up

Just in time for the Rolling Stones' documentary "Shine A Light," the hand musician Gerry Phillips has released his own rousing version of "Start Me Up."

Be careful watching Gnarls Barkley

The new Gnarls Barkley record debuts April 8 and judging by the first single "Run," it's going to be just as fun as their first album St. Elsewhere.

But don't expect to see the video on television much--if at all. There's a concern that the images that start at the 2:10 mark could cause people to have seizures. Seriously.

It's not the first music video to run into such problems. There was a similar worry years ago with Wang Chung's "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" video. Seriously.

Burning Piano Man

It's hard to fathom why anyone would want to play a burning piano. But the real head-scratcher from this news segment is that he's done it once before. At least Jimi Hendrix had the good sense to burn his guitar after his performance.

This clip got me thinking about director Spike Jonze's video for the group Wax.

Damien Rice covers Hallelujah at Leonard Cohen's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

I love this song. I love that there are so many versions of this song out there and I still love every one of them. I even enjoyed the American Idol version with Jason Castro.

Here's the video of Damien Rice singing this haunting song at Leonard Cohen's induction at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year.

The highway to what?

This clip is an odd one. It's an old man in overalls driving on a Pee-Wee Playhouse-esque tractor to AC/DC's "Highway to Hell." The clip originates from the land of David Hasselhoff- Germany. It's gotten more than 320,000 hits. Go figure.

Soulja Boy movement officially dead

These ladies ain't bad. The crowd loves them. But for me, once grandmothers start picking up on a trend, then it's time to officially take said trend out behind a shed and put it out of its misery.

The coordinated moves occur midway through the video:

Thriller inmates dance to Soulja Boy and MC Hammer

The famous Filipino inmates who danced the Thriller are back, and apparently taking requests.

The warden uploaded the video five days ago and it has already gotten more than 200,000 clicks on YouTube.

They're a little behind the trend curve (Soulja Boy: several months old, Hammer Time: several, several years old) but I'll give them some slack since they're across an ocean and, oh yeah, incarcerated.
